webnerbob 1 brace yourself:  we’re apparently on the verge of a world with flying cars. airbus group, the world’s second largest aircraft manufacturer and largest manufacturer of commercial helicopters, has been working on flying cars for a while now, and the ceo of airbus recently announced that the company hopes to test a prototype vehicle by the end of the year.  airbus formed a division called urban air mobility — which would be a pretty good name for a rock band — and it is working on both a vehicle that individuals could use and a multi-passenger transport that could be summoned by riders using a smartphone app, a la uber.  the prototype that airbus hopes to test this year is the single passenger vehicle, called the vahana.  airbus thinks that in 10 years fully vetted products may be on the market that make urban air transport a reality. the airbus business rationale has a decidedly futuristic vibe to it.  the concept is that the vehicles would be used in cities, where roadways are jammed but the skies aren’t.  airbus is forecasting that a growing percentage of the world’s population will congregate in cities, increasing the traffic congestion, and also envisions that cash-strapped governments might welcome air-based transportation because it doesn’t require investment in asphalt, concrete, steel supports, construction workers, and orange cones to shore up the crumbling ground-based traffic infrastructure.  and, because some cities are struggling with pollution — just ask china — airbus is designing its vehicles to minimize emissions and to avoid adding to the pollution mix. do we have the technology for flying cars?  airbus says yes:  the batteries, motors, and avionics needed are well underway, and the company and others are working on the artificial intelligence and detect-and-avoid sensors and navigation that would be needed to make flying cars a practical reality.  and, of course, there would need to be lots of related developments before flying cars fill the skies.  would municipalities designate particular flying zones — such as over existing roadways — or just allow fliers to take their cars anywhere?  how would drivers be trained?  and what kind of safety features would regulators require to make flying cars crash-worthy? for decades, when people have thought about the future, they’ve thought about flying cars.  now we may be on the cusp of that reality. “meet george jetson . . . .” posted in tv, world, technology | tagged airbus, flying cars, technology, the future, the jetsons, tv, world | 1 reply candle scents posted on january 16, 2017 by webnerbob reply for those, like me, who are challenged in the olfactory department, scented candles can be baffling. consider the candle currently flickering in our kitchen. it’s called “snuggly sweater.” does that mean it’s supposed to smell like a snuggly sweater? because, to me, it just smells like a burning candle. what is a “snuggly sweater” supposed to smell like, anyway? last time i checked, “snuggly” referred to a tactile feeling, not an odor. is “snuggly sweater” supposed to smell different than “scratchy sweater” or “bulky sweater” or “too hot sweater”? it seems pretty clear that scented candlemakers are just coming up with aspirational lifestyle names, rather than meaningful smells. therefore, keep an eye out for “warm hug,” “blazing hearth,” “leather patches,” and “fat wallet” coming soon to a candle shop near you. posted in america, family, humor | tagged america, family, humor, scented candles, smells, snuggly sweater | leave a reply end of the circus, start of the circus posted on january 16, 2017 by webnerbob 1 the ringling bros. barnum & bailey circus has announced that it will make its last performance in 2017.  home to acrobats, trapeze artists, clowns, high wire acts, men fired from cannons, ringmasters, jugglers, elephants, bareback daredevils, and lion tamers, the self-described “greatest show on earth” has been thrilling americans for 146 years. it’s another american institution clanking to an end.  once, people in america were excited when the circus train rolled into town, with a circus parade down main street to let everyone know that it was time to come out to some nearby lot, sit under the big top, smell the sawdust, eat some peanuts, and watch the spectacle.  but tastes change, and the organizers of the circus have cited those changing tastes, reflected in declining attendance, as one of the reasons for the end of the circus.  other reasons include high operating costs and the impact of a long dispute with animal rights advocates about using animals in the circus — a fight that ended with the decision in 2015 to cease using elephants in the show, which itself caused a significant drop in attendance. i remember going to the circus when i was young.  i wasn’t one of those kids who dreamed about running away to the circus and romanticized the itinerant life of circus performers, but i did enjoy the show, and so did uj and my grandparents.  i remember the bustle of the place, and the constant activity in the three rings, and the awesome sight of the people way up on the flying trapeze so far overhead.  i also remember the distinctive smell — a wild, heady combination of animals, dust, and human sweat, all charged with a kind of electricity running through the crowd when one of the more hazardous acts was being performed.  now, though, kids apparently don’t have the same attention span; they won’t sit still for the hours needed to watch the full run of the circus show and end up fiddling with their cell phones and texting their friends. it’s ironic, too, that the real circus is announcing its end just as the trump administration is getting ready to take office.  based on what we’ve seen in the run-up to inauguration day, from both the new president and his administration, its protesters, and its diehard opponents, american politics is going to be a wild, death-defying ride, full of surprises and unexpected actions at every turn.  who knows?  maybe these days we can only deal with one circus at a time. posted in entertainment, growing up, politics | tagged america, attention spans, circus, elephants, entertainment, growing up, politics, ringling bros, trump administration | 1 reply peanuts envy posted on january 15, 2017 by webnerbob reply should people who have peanut allergies be permitted to pre-board airplanes, along with the folks in wheelchairs? that’s the subject of a complaint filed last week with the department of transportation by food allergy research and education (“fare”), a group that advocates on behalf of people with food-borne allergies.  it alleges that american airlines is breaking the law and discriminating against those who have adverse physical reactions when exposed to peanuts by not accommodating them and allowing them to pre-board with others. for its part, american airlines — which doesn’t serve those little bags of peanuts to its passengers, incidentally — notes that it limits pre-boarding to people with physical disabilities that require them to get assistance in making it down the jet bridge and into their seats.  aa states that its planes are cleaned regularly, but the cleaning efforts, and for that matter the air filtration systems on the planes, are not designed to remove all traces of nut allergens. the airline states that it cannot establish “nut-free zones” on its planes, and it does not prevent other passengers from bringing nuts on board. fare contends that people with peanut allergies, and those who are traveling with them, should be permitted to pre-board so they can wipe down the seats, armrests, and trays, or even cover them.  it notes that, unlike american airlines, delta allows peanut allergy sufferers to pre-board upon request. it’s one of those weird issues that seem to crop up more and more in the modern world.  there’s no doubt that people who have peanut allergies can have severe reactions when exposed, up to and including going into anaphylactic shock.  at the same time, it doesn’t seem like people with peanut allergies really need pre-boarding to the same extent that, for example, people in wheelchairs do.  people with peanut allergies don’t require physical assistance, and even if they need to wipe down their seats, there seems to be no reason why that can’t be done when they board with everyone else, as part of the settling-in process that inevitably occurs when people board planes. if people with peanut allergies can pre-board, doesn’t that open up pre-boarding to people with other conditions who could plausibly claim they should be accommodated, too?  people with fear of crowds, for example, could argue that they shouldn’t be required to wait in the packed-in throng on the jet bridge, which could provoke an anxiety attack.  and peanut allergy pre-boarding seems to open the door to potential abuse, because airlines have no way of knowing whether someone who claims to have an allergy really does.  speaking as someone who has seen fellow travelers push the envelope on carry-on items and in jostling for early boarding, i’m guessing that if fare prevails on its complaint we’re going to see a huge spike in claimed peanut allergies. posted in america, travel | tagged accommodation, america, american walkscore.com that gives neighborhoods in columbus, and elsewhere, a “walk score,” a “transit score,” and a “bike score.”  the website appears to be used by people who are considering making a move to a new apartment and are interested in finding out how their potential new neighborhood rates in those three categories.  you can check out your neighborhood’s scores here. german village gets an 87 (out of 100) walk score, a 60 transit score, and a 65 bike score.  those ratings make german village the second most walkable neighborhood in columbus, close behind the short north.  the 87 walk score means that most errands can be accomplished on foot and gv is only a few points short of a “walker’s paradise.” speaking as a confirmed walker, it’s hard for me to imagine that you could find a more walkable neighborhood than german village.  i not only walk to the office every work day, but i also walk to the grocery store (as i did this morning), walk to the wine shop, coffee shop, barber shop, and deli, and walk to a bunch of nearby restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.  i’m not sure what kind of errand could not be achieved on foot from a german village location — and i also think gv is more convenient to the core downtown area than the short north is.  the quaint brick roadways, sidewalks, and houses in german village make hoofing it around our neighborhood a visual treat, too. the point of this post is not to quibble about german village’s scores, but rather to note that it’s gratifying to see that people are rating neighborhoods by their “walkability.”  we’d all be better off, from a health, fitness, environmental, infrastructure, and financial standpoint, if more people started to focus on walking when deciding where to live. posted in columbus | tagged columbus, german village, short north, walkability, walking, walkscore.com | leave a reply lion posted on january 14, 2017 by webnerbob reply last night kish and i went to see lion at the drexel.  it’s one of those independent films that lurk under the radar screen and never get shown at the local suburban multiplex — but that really have an impact, where you find yourself thinking about it hours or days later. lion tells the story of “saroo,” a five-year-old boy growing up in a desperately poor family in northern india.  to help his illiterate mother, who heads the family, saroo and his older brother guddu steal and sell coal and look for work whenever and wherever they can.  when saroo convinces guddu to take him on a quest for “night work,” everything breaks down.  saroo finds himself trapped on a train that travels more than a thousand miles and deposits him in kolkata, where he is alone and unable to speak the local language.  he becomes one of india’s lost children.  (shockingly, the film notes, in the closing credits, that each year 80,000 indian children become “lost.”) the boy doesn’t know the  correct name of his home town, or his mother, and has no way to return.  the scenes of the small yet resourceful little boy trying to eke out a life in a vast city are unforgettable and heartbreaking — yet he survives, is eventually placed in an orphanage, and is adopted by an australian couple who later adopt another indian boy. twenty years later, saroo has grown up in a beautiful waterfront home in tasmania and speaks english with an aussie accent.  he begins to find himself haunted by memories of his long-lost mother and brother and an overwhelming guilt that they have been frantically searching for him for all those years.  using google earth, railroad routes and estimated speeds, and a lot of maps he starts a seemingly impossible quest to find his home town — a quest that complicates his relationship with his adoptive parents, his adoptive brother, and his girlfriend. lion is a well acted and filmed movie, with staggeringly beautiful scenes of the indian countryside and overwhelming scenes of little saroo abandoned in an uncaring city.  dev patel is excellent as the grown up, obsessed saroo — showing acting range far beyond the comedic roles i’ve seen him in previously — and nicole kidman is equally good as the strong and loving adoptive mother who resolutely tries to hold her diverse family together.  but the movie is stolen by sunny pawar, who plays young paroo with a genuineness that can touch even an insensitive brute like me. keep an eye out for lion and try to see it in a theater, where you can fully appreciate the cinematography and really terrific soundtrack.  and if you do, be sure to stay in your seat until the very end — when you’ll learn why the file is entitled lion. posted in movies, world | tagged dev patel, india, lion, lost children, movies, nicole kidman, saroo, sunny pawar, world | leave a reply the end of “drilling and filling” posted on january 13, 2017 by webnerbob 1 here’s another example of the miracles of modern medicine:  scientists have discovered a drug that appears to encourage damaged teeth to regenerate — a development that could bring an end to the practice of drilling out cavities and filling them. the drug is called tideglusib.  it not only is self-evidently unpronounceable, it also has the effect of stimulating and activating stem cells within the pulpy center of teeth, promoting the generation of the hard material that makes up most of our teeth, called the dentin — as anyone who has carefully read the tooth diagrams and tooth charts at the dentist’s office will recall.  scientists tested the drug on mice, and found that applying the drug to cavities in the teeth of mice, using a biodegradable sponge, caused the tooth being treated to regenerate enough dentin to close the cavity.  (wait a second:  mice get cavities, too?  they must not be very attentive to brushing and flossing.) the next step will be to test the drug on humans, but the signs are encouraging that we may be on the verge of a new approach to dentistry.  speaking as someone who practiced terrible dental hygiene as a callow youth and often found myself sitting in the dentist’s chair, mouth agape, listening to the whine of the drill and hoping it didn’t strike a nerve, i think an approach that lets teeth regenerate naturally would be terrific.  and, for those of us who have dental fillings that date back to the days of beatlemania, the regeneration of natural teeth would have the advantage of avoiding visits to the dentist because old fillings are finally cracking or breaking and need to be replaced, too. posted in humor, science | tagged cavities, dentists, humor, medicine, science,
