skip to content travel marmot adventures in travel, music and who knows what else… menu scroll down to content posts posted on january 9, 2017january 9, 2017ablaze to drunk and on a star it has become something of a tradition in the relatively short life of this blog to write a state of the nation-style post, assessing the world around me and my place in it as we enter a new year. and it is rapidly becoming another tradition that the good intentions to have that piece written on new year’s day are derailed and delayed. two years ago was spot on, written in a candlelit bar on the ghanaian coast on a quiet first night of the year, albeit not posted for another two weeks due to the lack of wi-fi. but last year, it took until january 23 before what became the penultimate entry for 2016 to see the light of day, so writing this nine days into 2017 is positively punctual. and a form of rebirth. that entry 12 months ago announced the break this blog was going on which was supposed to last a few weeks, months at the most – not, one brief return aside, a year – and an overhaul of the design of the site. finally that prediction has come true – the new look you have hopefully spotted, albeit with a few minor tweaks still to come, and a return to regular articles both in the a-z challenge and working my way through the travel pieces (this is the travel marmot after all) which have been on the must-write list for who knows how long. travel remains close to my heart, even if there is none on the horizon – something that does not sit easy and there is a real itch to do so something about it. my bed for the night, right, on new year’s day 2015 in elmina, ghana so how did we get to that point? that post on 2015 was written sat in the power-free, darkened bar at a small eco beach resort with the camp pets curled up on my feet or alongside me. away to my right, the occasional sounds of some of my fellow travellers mixed with the sound of the atlantic with a night in my one-man tent at the side of the volleyball court awaiting me. this post is written sat at the desk in the corner of the front room of my flat. to my right, the sound of american college football is coming out of the tv with workmen outside dismantling the ice rink which has taken over the square  at gloucester docks for the past few weeks. food will not be cooked over a fire from the (newly) well-stocked fridge and bed will be, well, a bed. a proper bed. and between now and heading under the duvet, there’s all the modern conveniences to enjoy. not to be underestimated or taken for granted. especially now, probably for the first time in six years, my life is firmly settled and fully unpacked. if this new-year post tradition was in place in 2010 – round about the time the earliest entries in this blog were written, albeit initially, on a different website – it would have recorded a similar story. it was about 50 miles away across the border in cardiff, but there was a steady, responsible job on a newspaper and my own house (well, mine and the mortgage company’s). everything was pretty much sorted, running smoothly and normal. sunset over elmina – almost time to start writing right up to the decision to jack it all in and go travelling. and since then, my life has been in a sort of limbo, living out of bags, on the road, with large chunks of my clothes or belongings in storage and even when back to what seemed like normality and even running a small company in my spare time, there was never that feeling of being settled. of putting down roots. of permanence. there was always another big trip somewhere down the line, even before it was decided on what it was going to be. but sat here now, everything is out of storage. there aren’t even things in bags, clothes are hanging up (unironed and wrinkled, but hanging up) or folded in drawers – now the ikea packages have finally been put together –  books are in strict order on the bookshelves, furniture from my rented-out house in cardiff surrounds me (the new tenants did not want it) and this week marks a year back on the payroll and in the office across the golden valley in cheltenham. life is settled. life is, pretty much, good. life is not in a state of limbo. well, sort of. and that sort of is why there is no travel planned. bar a couple of ideas and one plan made over a few drinks at a trans africa reunion which are being suppressed until that state of limbo is totally over. many of you will know the new year brings not only a delayed travel marmot blog post but also a tax deadline and that is what is largely delaying any plans for the future. that end of january deadline is pretty much taken care of, all the relevant paperwork shipped off to the accountants. it is another tax issue which has everything on hold and explains me actually having an accountant. that decision in 2010 to leave cardiff was not meant to last this long. always thought my future involved me returning there and moving back into my house. but no, bar a couple of months between tenants, that house has been rented and there is outstanding tax to be paid. no attempt to dodge tax, just a breakdown in communication and, in my case, organisation. so while the wait goes on for the final amount payable, there is no spending and until there is a clear idea of the budget, travel plans are on hold. the moment the payment is made, the planning starts ( and if my boss reads this, don’t worry. that’s travelling little and often, not another lengthy, quit-my-job option. probably). so that’s me, what about the a-z challenge which forms the centrepiece of this blog at the moment. that last, solitary post which popped up a few months ago wrapped up the end of the ds, so to set things up neatly for the new year and the regular return of this blog, it has been a case of mopping up the a-ds which arrived on my ipod over the last 12 months. it was a fairly lengthy list from ablaze by school of seven bells to drunk and on a star by kevin morby from 2016 albums, a few older ones missed while on the road  and any others picked up over the year (a flurry of catching up on teenage fanclub’s back catalogue for starters). the normal, slightly longer than normal, playlist which accompanies each a-z entry is below but what were my picks for 2016’s best albums? was going to do a proper top 10, but opted against that. plenty of good albums last year, just not much verging on the great as most struggled to keep the quality throughout (sorry guys,  bowie’s blackstar is good, but would people really be raving about it the way they do if it wasn’t for the circumstances?). so, in no particular order, my pick for 2016 are: skeleton tree – nick cave & the bad seeds (not an easy listen, especially in light of his son’s death, but worth investing time in) american band – drive-by truckers (my current obsession and next band on the gig list) a moon shaped pool – radiohead (who had the great idea of a track listing running from a-z) going, going… – the wedding present (surprisingly good from a band largely overlooked in recent years) teens of denial – car seat headrest (the type of band this a-z challenge was designed for as could well have slipped through the net, but kept popping up and catching my attention) schmilco – wilco (not all wilco fans liked it, but fine by me) and bubbling under or worth more of my time in the weeks to come are: blackstar – david bowie 22, a million – bon iver (really need to spend more time on it) here – teenage fanclub (what prompted that re-examination) case/lang/veirs – case/lang/veirs (bit hit and miss, but the good bits are well worth it) chaleur humaine – christine and the queens (surprised my self with this one. tilted one of the songs of the years) a sailor’s guide to earth – sturgill simpson (a bit more time with this one and could well be bumped into the top list) head carrier – pixies (jury still out, last addition to the ipod. could go either way) meet the humans – steve mason (slipped by me a bit, another that needs further examination) babes never die – honeyblood (some great songs but does tail away) i, gemini – let’s eat grandma (we hit the es next time – we’ll see more of them then) aliveanthrocenebabes never diethe ballad of the costa concordiabearblackstarblank spaceburn the witchcry all daydarkened flags at the cusp of dawndon't cry no tears posted on november 23, 2016don’t stare at the sun to dynamo hey, how you doing? it’s been a while, what you been up to? hopefully, the return of this blog is rather more an encounter with someone you have been hoping to catch up with rather than bumping into someone you haven’t seen for ages and quickly remember exactly why. like most of those e-mails, phone calls or get-togethers you really have been meaning to do for ages, this blog was never supposed to take this long. yes, the plan was supposed to take a bit of a break and come back refreshed with a new look and a few fresh ideas. just not this long. that break was started back in january so it has lasted most of 2016 and the observant among you will notice that not that much has changed. precisely nothing to be exact. there has been plenty of fiddling around in the background and even a couple of abortive redesigns which were so close to making the grade. right up to the point when something techie stalled everything or the new look which seemed so attractive one day, suddenly lost its charm at the next log in. and having spent large chunks of the intervening 11 months involved in redesigning part or all of a couple of newspapers, believe me what looked good one day or in your mind, can look far less effective, eye-catching or user-friendly when you go back to it. for user-friendly, read it creates more work. there will be a new look. by the time you read this, even by the time it is posted, there may be be a new background picture. by the time you look again (hopefully not that long), it could well have changed again. suggest that could be what happens in the next couple of months, trying out a couple of designs and seeing what works. so what’s happened during almost a year of blog silence? anything interesting? has 2016 thrown up anything worth talking about? no, thought not. no idea what is about to happen next… there have been a long list of events since the blog went on a break which have had me sitting at the laptop ready to type or composing articles – rants in a fair amount of cases – on the way to and from work. in a rough sort of order… david bowie, farage, gloucester’s poor form, trump, unexpected brilliance from gloucester, hereford at wembley, boris johnson, trump, muhammad ali, farage, brexit, farage (getting the rant bit?), being told to stop complaining about brexit (no, that’s democracy), the olympics, gloucester’s poor form (new season, same story), more issues with tenants, the taxman talking rather more about money owed than poetry, trump (more rants), more out-of-the-blue brilliance from gloucester (reliable only in their unreliability), leonard cohen, farage again, any number of other dead celebrities who were part of my childhood… all nearly got the keyboard tapping away. we will get there in the coming weeks. to say nothing of what has been going on nearer to home (including why a lack of time and, frankly, surplus energy has also been a factor for the longer than planned break), music and travel. you know, the subjects which this blog is built around. there has not been that much in the way of travel. after spending most of 2015 observing a fascinating chunk of the world on the road (well, the dirt tracks for large chunks – if we were lucky), 2016 has been spent largely observing a mystifying world from the comfort of my sofa (now the cheap one bought out of need has been replaced by the one my latest tenants didn’t want). the right choice there was one trip stateside, introducing my nephew to the delights of boston and new york – thankfully, he seems to have come down far more on the side of the red sox than the yankees – but travel has mainly been confined to honing the bucket list and planning future trips. more to come on that after a new idea was planted in my brain a couple of weeks ago. so what of music? after all, this is in the a-z ipod challenge section. it’s not been a bad year, a few new discoveries and some old favourites rediscovered (the wedding present live in bristol tomorrow for the second time this year after a gap of nearly three decades) and enough decent stuff in the last 12 months that a rundown of the best could form an upcoming post. which is all good as there has been plenty to listen to with the task of listening to the contents of my ipod from a-z on a hiatus with the blog – it had to be really or there would have been too much to catch up on. but when the break was still looking like a short one, there was a fairly lengthy chunk from don’t stare at the sun by richard hawley, via downtown train by tom waits at number 2,700 and the longest track so far – all 27.37 of driftin’ back by neil young and crazy horse – to dynamo by johnny marr, at the time track 2,799, at the end of the ds. along the way were a couple of tracks which would certainly make the long list if desert island discs decided a travelling production journalist was a suitable guest – driver 8 by rem and the wonderful dry the rain by the beta band (you know, the one john cusack tries to sell to unsuspecting punters in high fidelity). and there were plenty of other great tracks of varying vintages, topped off with don’t talk by 10,000 maniacs, don’t you fall by the be good tanyas (who always bring back memories of sitting on the banks of the yukon on a lovely summer evening, inevitably being bitten by mosquitoes), the door by turin brakes, down about it by the lemonheads, drunken butterfly by sonic youth, duel by propaganda and duet by everything everything, with some jam, nirvana, buffalo town, belly and lloyd cole thrown in for good measure. so normal service is resumed – bar a catch-up of the a-d tracks bought in the meantime. more of that next time, once i’ve worked out how to get the photo library plug-in to work again after all this time… down about itdriver 8drunken butterflydry the rainduelduet posted on january 23, 2016do it clean to don’t run our hearts around on the first night of 2015, sat in a dark bar on the ghanaian coast, wrote a reflective piece on the state of life on a big yellow truck less than a quarter of the way through a journey around africa. twelve months on, on the first night of 2016, sat down to do the same thing at the resumption of what was about to become my new idea of normality… well, that was the intention. one look at the date which sits at the top of this post reveals the good intentions of new year’s day were not fulfilled. certainly got as far as picking up the laptop, stared at the screen for a while and, probably, got distracted by reading old posts, some youtube videos or facebook posts. for many of the evenings, and a few afternoons, since, the plan was to finally get round to writing this post, only for something to distract me or a sheer lack of inspiration or energy to take over. new year on the ghanaian coast and so, just over a year on from that post in the dim light of the bar at the stumble inn, elmina, what is the state of my life? a lot has changed. it is a lot colder for starters. and tonight, for the first time since well before that night, my own bed awaits me. not a temporary one in a hostel or upgrade, not a faltering airbed in a tent somewhere in africa, not on my sister’s sofa fighting for supremacy with a black labrador and not, as has been the case for the last few weeks, on a mattress on the floor. the bed has been in boxes waiting to be assembled in my new flat (another change we’ll get to in a bit) for slightly longer than this post has been waiting to be written and the brother-in-law kindly spared me some time to piece it all together (gloucester and hereford obviously both away). not that there’ll be a nice long sunday lie-in in it. instead it is up and off to work (on the bus until the old faithful wheels are replaced by a new model) and a day designing sports pages in what, for the first time in a few years, is back to being a career, rather than merely a job up to the next bout of travelling. travelling is far from off the agenda. if anything, the mental bucket list of places to visit and things to do is even longer than before heading to africa. but the plan is short and often, rather than any more lengthy epics. at least for a few years. next up is a summer break to familiar ground in the us. and both route 66 and australia/new zealand are high on the list for the next couple of years, but will be looking to squeeze them into my holiday allocation. think the days of quitting jobs to travel are behind me. probably. and so what of the job? somehow, managed to quit my job, go travelling, beg for a few freelance shifts and end up back at my old desk with an improved role. well, sort of, still waiting for it to sort out my old desk. it wasn’t quite that straightforward. there was a spell as a freelance (supposedly three days a week but actually five or six), then taken on as staff, only in a different position and even a different place – shipped off to bath to plug a gap on the paper down there for two months, before finally heading home to that new, improved role at the start of the year. it comes complete with a lengthy to-do list which has barely been started in the opening weeks as the whole department gets used to a new structure and responsibilities and somehow managed to volunteer myself to draw up a new style guide, which partly explains the silence on this blog. in amid all that (with christmas thrown in just to confuse things a bit further), there’s been a move into a new flat to work my way through. my flat’s over there somewhere in the distance the resolution to get back to the gym should be made a bit easier as you can actually see it from the front window of my flat. the fact you can also see three pubs and as many restaurants may not help that plan (to mention nothing of the ones you can’t see just around the corner and the two cafes downstairs). which just leaves this blog. what’s happening there? if the past few weeks of silence has not already tipped you off, it is taking a bit of a break. not just because it has been pretty hard to fit it all in (or find the energy and inspiration to do it properly), but because it is going to undergo a few changes. a bit of a new look, a bit more structure, a lot more from africa, a fair amount more from the lengthy list of travel pieces which has been sat gathering dust for ages and lots, lots more from the a-z ipod challenge. there may well be a couple of posts during the hiatus, which should not be that long (depends on how confusing all the technical changes are), and at least the break will give me a chance to catch up on the backlog of new music which has been downloaded since my return home. the old faithfuls came up strong in the latest batch of a-z songs took us from two versions of echo and the bunnymen’s classic do it clean to the less than classic don’t run our hearts around by black mountain (via number 2,500 – don’t ask about my husband by mark kozelek & desertshore – which is already 49 further down the line, given the post-christmas influx of new tracks). kozelek also popped up in his sun kil moon guise with dogs, the wonderful trawl through his romantic/sexual history, while a belated rediscovery of super furry animals brought us do or die. old favourites shone again with two from ryan adams (do miss america and the lovely don’t ask for the water), billy bragg (dolphins) and rem’s (don’t go back to) rockville. don’t let me down, gently took me back to the brief time when the wonder stuff occupied my turntable, plus notable entries from the flaming lips (do you realize?), public enemy (don’t believe the hype) and the libertines with don’t look back into the sun, one of just two of their tracks that are really worth revisiting. promise to get the blog fully functioning again before they break up again. do miss tell you that dirty water by the standells was inspired by producer ed cobb and his girlfriend getting mugged near what was, back in the sixties, the polluted river charles in boston. the charles is now, thankfully, much cleaner and – in most places – a spot to be savoured, not avoided. and, having learned from personal experience, you no longer “have to be in by 12 o’clock” in boston. but the first, slightly fuzzed up guitar notes of the distinctive intro can still be heard across one part of boston – and any number of bars – throughout the summer months. the more often the better for those of us who pledge some sort of allegiance to red sox nation. the rather cleaner water of the river charles each time the red sox win a match – sadly not often enough in the last two seasons – dirty water soundtracks the celebrations around the wonderful old amphitheatre that is fenway park (disproving any theories that bigger and newer is best), those unmistakeable opening notes often ringing out before the winning run has actually reached home plate. it’s not the only song that has somehow been co-opted by red sox fans and ask most people which is the club song and they would go for sweet caroline – played in the middle of the eighth inning and aired in a show of solitary by the hated new york yankees after the marathon bombing of 2013 – but there’s a fair few of the fenway faithful who see that as too much of a sop to the fairweather fan. throw in the dropkick murphys’ double header of i’m shipping up to boston – soundtrack to multiple championship celebrations across the city in the last decade or so, as well the departed, and walk-on music for former red sox closer jonathan papelbon – and tessie and they are not short of options for backing music on the highlight reels. normally, not a huge fan of too much music and gimmicks being used to create an atmosphere at sports grounds (especially rugby, bar the traditional songs like fields of athenry or calon lan, but please god not the abomination that is swing low…). fenway park pre-game, looking back towards downtown boston. the fact hurricane irene may be about to hit may explain the lack of crowds generally means the fans are incapable of doing it themselves, especially in the new breed of marketing concepts that seem to be supplanting traditional rugby clubs (mention no names, but anyone playing at football grounds or bigger stadia to create an occasion – or on plastic pitches to match their fans). that all may have something to do with growing up a gloucester rugby fan. we make do with one traditional chant of “glawsterrr, glawsterrr” and the nearest we have come to a football-esque chant for any of our players was the stirring, imaginative “terry fanolua, terry fanolua…” and, of course, the odd rendition of la marseillaise when philippe saint-andre was on the wing or, latterly, our coach. at american sports grounds, it somehow all seems to work (even the singing of the star-spangled banner before every game, so easy to sneer at from afar, makes sense at the ground). maybe if is because of the way american sports are more attuned to the entertainment industry, with the inherent pauses for commercial television, are occasions to be enjoyed beyond the actual sporting event or, just maybe, due to the shortage of away fans at many matches due to the sheer distances involved. but just how did a boy who learned all about sport in the shed at kingsholm feel just as big a draw to a seat in the bleachers or down the first base line at fenway? or, possibly more pertinently, become willing to stay up most of the night to watch a game against the yankees that went to extra innings scoreless? late-night baseball on channel 5 had provided a grounding before my first trip to the states – amazingly 10 years ago this september – which started with a week in boston and several nights spent in bars around the city watching the latest game, a scene repeated throughout our six weeks on the road. fenway under the lights a move around the corner in the office meant working until the early hours of sunday morning. late to bed, later to rise and with no return to work until wednesday (bar popping in before our weekly boozeday tuesday afternoon sessions), sunday’s bedtime moved well after midnight and the only thing to watch on tv for much of the year was, you guessed it, baseball. that season of late-night watching just happened to coincide with the red sox winning their second world series crown in four years and they had got their hooks into me – even with the warnings that such success was fleeting and supporting them was far more about frustration and false hope.  as a gloucester fan, that just seemed natural. seeing a game at fenway appeared and was quickly crossed off the bucket list. as was seeing them against the yankees. and, finally, came seeing them beat the yankees – courtesy of a mike napoli walk-off home run in the 11th inning, sparking another rendition of dirty water at just before 1am on a sweltering july night. the red sox were back in the world series that same season. the same red sox that had collapsed amid acrimony in the closing weeks of the season after my presence at a double header win over the oakland a’s. the same red sox that had finished bottom the al east the previous year. and they only went and won it, ensuring everybody who saw it would remember just where they were. a press box with a better view that many which in my case, about 4am in the morning back home, was desperately trying to tune in my radio to catch the final outs. having stayed up to watch the potentially decisive win over the st louis cardinals, my virgin media box decided it was a pretty safe time to switch itself off and go through a series of updates just as the game entered its final inning. my frustration, nay anger, was matched only by my surprise that somebody was still manning virgin’s media twitter account and responding to some less than complimentary tweets. when the television came back on, the game was over, the world series won and even dirty water had faded into the night. it resurfaced – as any of you paying attention will probably have worked out – on the latest batch of songs in the a-z ipod challenge that took us from public service broadcasting to queens of the stone age. and an interesting batch of songs it was, from the old faithfuls (belle & sebastien, echo & the bunnymen, rem, the pogues), an excellent rediscovery (divine hammer by the breeders) and some interesting, relatively new discoveries – be they new acts, songs that have just passed me by or just ones that are among the huge backlog that passed me by on the road in africa. john grant’s disappointing is definitely in that category (the album has yet to catch my attention like the previous two did), waxahatchee continues to intrigue with dixie cups and jars and the civil wars stole my attention with a lovely cover of disarm (followed swiftly by the smashing pumpkins’ original). may just have to listen to some of them on a plane back to boston this summer. dirty dream number twodirty old towndirty challenge – picking a song each day for a week that means something to me. opting to steer well away from any sort of ‘best of…’ list, my choices were a sort of musical journey through my life, both personal and my musical life (although the two are pretty much entwined. the a-z blog is on a bit of a pre-christmas hiatus (of which more in a couple of catch-up posts before a few changes – on and offline – in the year), so to fill a bit of a gap, here’s a version of those seven days… day 1 once had to do a top 10 for my old newspaper to fill a hole just before a christmas deadline. one of our celebrity columnists failed to deliver, so it fell to a distinctly non-celebrity columnist – albeit the column in the weekly sports result paper or the stand-in when someone was on holiday – and my entire music collection went out of my head. doubt if too many of that 10 would make any such list now, but this one would. echo & the bunnymen were my band, my first gig (well, sort of) and my fashion gurus (hence me stealing my grandad’s old, long overcoat, which had very deep pockets to hide pint glasses in for the walk home from the pub). accelerated my nme-inspired descent into an 80s indie ghetto. will gladly argue (and have, many times) that the second half of ocean rain is the most perfect run of songs on any album. this is oft-overlooked amid the other classics, but it’s my favourite… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zbdy8eidi0 day 2 second one sort of surprised even me, but part of a key role in my musical development when the teenage me was listening to a solid diet of british indie. my sister started going out with some bloke (who she later married) who made me a c90 that threw in plenty of domestic indie, but also opened the door to american guitar bands, which i ran through gladly – the replacements, big black, sonic youth, red guitars, husker du and some lot from athens, georgia, among others. could have picked almost any of the tracks (still have that tape somewhere), but stayed nearer to home. a few years later, used to make my own c90s for a mate and his wife for each of my regular trips to london. on one of them was this and lead singer pete astor, who years later ended up as a friend of my mate with their sons in a band together (let’s wrestle). also fulfils my jingly jangly quotient. day 3 this one sort of links on from the previous day when my indie ghetto started to be stormed by american guitars (red or otherwise). last track on that c90 was superman by rem, a band i’d heard of but knew nothing about – hearing superman, thought you could decipher all their lyrics. they went on to be the biggest band of my late teens and beyond (pretty much till bill berry left when it all went a bit awry) and they produced, from murmur to green, possibly the greatest run of albums of any band. also pointed me in the direction of many other bands and an american road trip just had to stop off in athens. could have chosen any number of tracks, but life’s rich pageant was first up for me and, hey, i believe in coyotes and time as an abstract… day 4 as the ’80s turned into the ’90s, school was finally behind me, university drifted out of reach (something to do with spending a bit too much of the previous couple of years in the pub or listening to loud music, rather than doing any work) and, eventually, my career in journalism got off to a start just before my teens ended. music was still centred around jingly jangly indie and american guitars and the regular banana club live nights at the gloucester guildhall (at one of which they shot the video for emf’s unbelievable), before the real onset of grunge (take it or leave it) and the largely forgettable onslaught of britpop. and there was this lot. still one of the finest albums, still one of my loudest gigs (quiet, loud, quiet, loud, very loud – second only to sugar, who so nearly made the list) and soundtrack to an awful lot of memories. day 5 the bit when it gets a bit emotional. we’ve done musical education and the 80s, time for the only entry from the 90s. but this one is timeless. there had to be a bit of billy bragg in there, a constant since the mid-80s – trying to work out if seen him live in three or four different decades. my favourite song of his changes, the saturday boy, levi stubbs’ tears, the short answer… the list goes on. even some of the stuff he did with wilco. but none matches the emotional punch and resonance of this one. have written a few times about the background to jacking in a good job (twice) to go travelling because you never know what might happen if you put off living. get paid to organise words into a meaningful order, but never managed to put some of those personal feelings as well and as powerfully as this. day 6 having hung around in the ’80s for a while, it’s straight from the early ’90s into the new millennium and the discovery of a new obsession. first stumbled across ryan adams on an uncut magazine free cd and tracked down a copy of heartbreaker – spent an entire afternoon reorganising and cleaning a kitchen in a shared house, just so i could listen to it over and over again. i t was not only discovering adams, it took me on a road that saw indie replaced by (to quote a friend after he’d been listening to my ipod) ‘melancholic americana’ as a mainstay of my collection. day 7 final part brings us not quite up to date, but a song which formed a huge part of the soundtrack of the last year or so. the last song always had to be one that soundtracked my travelling years as we head into time to settle down and concentrate on the career (and bank balance) for a while. there’ll still be travelling, but shorter trips more often rather than long adventures around much of the globe or africa. those trips have largely been soundtracked by playlists set up before and could have provided any number of nominations. but sufjan stevens wins out (just edging carissa by sun kil moon) as he soundtracked two trips, this one the most played of 10 months on the road in africa. who said travelling had to be happy? posts navigation page 1 page 2 … page 30 next page pages #374 (no title) about
