home recipes diy contact three wooden spoonsscenes from a simple kitchen & beyondwhile i was away october 20, 2016there are many, many other things i should be doing right now but i’ll just ignore the dirty floor and sink full of dishes for the time being…i didn’t plan to step away for so long but life has been happening and you all know how that goes. we had a busy summer, though now that i think back i can’t really remember what we were busy doing. we did have a photo shoot with dara sikkila photography; she did an amazing job..here are some of my favorites. we went to new hampshire for two weeks and had a blast with family and friends out there. travelling solo with a four year old and an 18 month old is not an experience that i will choose to repeat anytime soon. i’m still exhausted from those flights. my good friend carrie had a baby in june and she let me try my hand at a newborn photo shoot. isn’t she a dolly? i had so much fun with it but kudos to all of you photographers out there…the editing kind of kicked my butt (i’ll cut myself a little slack since i am still using photoshop elements and i have no clue how to use actions). and now she’s almost five months old already! matilda started preschool in september and has been loving it…she even gets to take the bus home! it’s only twice a week but we’re getting an introduction to a school schedule. she loves it but it’s hard to believe that she will be in school full-time next year! i actually had this grand plan that she would go to school in the afternoon and i would put oliver for a nap so that i could have a few quiet hours to blog. ha! you can see how well that worked. a couple friends, my sister, and i trained over the summer and ran the bemidji blue ox half marathon a couple weeks ago. it wasn’t my best race but it wasn’t my worst! it was a beautiful course and we had a lot of fun. home renovations have been at a stand-still since this is reid’s busy season…i haven’t really done a whole lot around here either. if the floor gets vacuumed i count it as a win. we did get plans drawn up for an addition of a garage but we aren’t sure when that will actually happen. i have a few things on my list to purchase including a coffee table, dining chairs, some pillows (come on, it’s a new season!!), a new rug for matilda’s room, and oliver’s room needs a complete overhaul. i’m kind of holding off on that for now because…we may need his room for a nursery! :) baby #3 is due to arrive on may 9th! we are very excited, though i would be lying if i didn’t say that i’m already a little anxious about after delivery. i’ve been sick but not nearly as bad as the other two pregnancies so i can’t complain, though there was a time that i basically subsisted solely on orange jello. exciting times ahead! happy fall! rest assured that we went pumpkin picking last weekend, i baked some apple squares the other day, and boots and vests are part of our daily uniform…we have achieved an appropriate level of ‘basic’. share this:click to email this to a friend (opens in new window)click to print (opens in new window)click to share on facebook (opens in new window)click to share on twitter (opens in new uncategorized making your house a home, and enjoying the process february 26, 2016 some days i wish our house was totally done. complete. i get annoyed at the parts that aren’t painted yet or our lack of a coffee table. our entry way makes me cringe and the basement, well, let’s not even get started on that. but then i think about the parts that are done and what it took to get them to that point. for each new light fixture or faucet installed, i’ve spent hours researching and searching for the one that will fit my vision, and budget, perfectly. much to my sister’s dismay, we lived in our house for months without a single mirror because i couldn’t find the right one. i’m writing at a metal shelving unit-turned-desk because i want an antique one and it hasn’t turned up at my door yet. i’m expecting it any day now… most of the rooms in our house hover around 50-75% complete and i’m (usually) okay with that. i enjoy the hunt for the perfect piece that will finish off a room. i don’t mind buying new items but i love finding used furniture and decor that has some history to it. they don’t make them like they used to definitely rings true here; the beautiful solid wood of yesterday is replaced by the ikea laminate of today. but i’m not ashamed to say that we’ve got a mixture of both. i’ve found that if i really take the time to find something that i love, i’ll hold on to it for a lot longer. i tend to gravitate towards neutrals, especially with furniture, so even through multiple moves i’ve been able to keep most of it and it has worked in each house. simple and classic is the name of the game. i know something belongs in my house when i have multiple spots to put it and i can’t decide where i like it best. a pillow from my couch made its way onto our bed and there it stays. side tables and baskets are frequently being shuffled. rugs drift around. i’ve tried to stick to the same aesthetic and color scheme throughout the house so that it feels cohesive as you walk through. our kids bedrooms are where i get to step off the map a little. i haven’t started on oliver’s room yet but matilda’s is just about complete. whimsical was the word i chose for her room and it’s about as girly as you can get. each piece came about separately…i didn’t walk into a store and furnish her room in a day. but that’s the fun part. looking at her dresser alone: i had the bunny mirror on my wish list for many months before i bit the bullet and ordered it, the mermaid print is from a weekend trip to bemidji, the m is from her first birthday party, the gold framed print was purchased on one of my many homegoods runs, the unicorn just entered our lives via target, the wooden doll is from a trip to minneapolis, my sister delivered the cat dish from new hampshire, and i hauled the books and bookends in my suitcase after one of my trips home. i’m just realizing that i put on a lot of miles collecting all of it but it’s neat to look at each item and have a fun memory attached to it. for oliver’s room, i think my word will be adventure and there are a few items at the antique store that have his name on them…a hudson’s bay blanket being one of them. finger’s crossed that it’s still there and that the vendor lowered the price by about 90%. a few different people have said to me, “i just like too many different things and can’t seem to pull everything together.” my (novice) advice is that while you can appreciate different styles, figure out what you are really drawn to and what will fit with the style of your home. you don’t need to strictly stick to one type of design style, but keeping everything within the same range will make your house feel more unified. while i may love the look of a glittering chandelier, i know that it does not fit into my farmhouse so i didn’t put one in. ultra-modern furniture also wouldn’t work with the design of our house so i avoid that. i might be contradicting myself now by saying this but if you really, really love something but it doesn’t quite fit with the style of your house, just buy it anyway. you will be the one looking at it everyday and it will make your house more “you”. don’t ever buy something you don’t like just for the sake of a “stylish” house. i read somewhere once that you need to be content in your house, at whichever place you’re at in the process. don’t wait for “someday” to come so that then you can be happy in your home. i really took that to heart and i do try to enjoy each stage. i’ve also applied that to raising our children. sure, some things will be easier to do when we don’t have little ones underfoot (and on my back, and no, you can’t sit on my head) but by wishing away the years i would be missing out on the fun they are right now. sometimes i have to remind myself to enjoy the moment but i know that the times i sit down on the floor to roll a ball to oliver or play ‘cat’ with matilda isn’t time wasted. make lasting memories in your home, and just let it be messy sometimes. in the end, it’s your home. fill it with things you treasure and memories that make you smile. your house should make you feel happy and inspired everyday. even if it’s half done. share this:click to email this to a friend (opens in new window)click to print (opens in new window)click to share on facebook (opens in new window)click to share on twitter (opens in new what i think about that tagged: design, enjoying your home, farmhouse, farmhouse renovation, fixer upper, girls bedroom, interior design, renovationsa farmhouse christmas december 15, 2015 last year at this time i was on bed rest and the thought of decorating for christmas wasn’t very appealing. this year i was very excited to make our house festive but i also wanted to keep things simple. i enjoy switching things up each year so i don’t like to spend a lot of money on holiday decor. so i bought a couple things and ‘semi-handmade’ the rest. here’s what the farmhouse is looking like these days! i bought 4 yards of muslin, tied knots at the ends, and draped it on our table for a runner. it was actually nicely ironed until a certain child spilled syrup all over it. so, after washing it, it shrunk a foot or two and was wrinkled beyond belief. out of sheer laziness i decided to keep it wrinkled and it actually has grown on me. it’s ‘rustic’, like the rest of the house. ;) i bought the centerpiece at a local craft fair and love the cheery color it brings to the table. the joy sign was also from a craft fair and features string looped around nails. i love it. i found soft garland from wal-mart…you can’t beat 50 feet for $7.48! i bought three packs and draped four windows and our banister. i tripled each strand and twisted them together to make it more full. a side note: i bought this table at an auction in new hampshire for $40 while i was visiting this summer. my mom and sister drove out here in october and delivered it! aren’t they the best? i’m still deciding what to do about seating but i love the extra room it offers. the living room just got some garland, a chalkboard, and the nativity. the kids play with the nativity a lot so the pieces are usually strewn about the house. the table is a temporary fixture…i found it at a thrift store and plan to use it as a vanity for another future bathroom upstairs. the kitchen also got some garland, the world’s smallest christmas tree, and a few other little pieces (a star, an angel who’s missing her wings, and a wooden tree). we decided to forego a big tree this year since we’ll be in new hampshire for christmas. i’ve been diffusing a blend of citrus oils and the house smells lovely. a handmade wreath (pine boughs wrapped onto an embroidery hoop) bids you farewell as you head out the (unfinished) door. merriest of christmases to you and yours! share this:click to email this to a friend (opens in new window)click to print (opens in new window)click to share on facebook (opens in new
