the mumbler mumbling from china about football menu skip to content home england china euro 2016 about the mumbler 中国 post navigation ← older posts epl gameweek 21: man utd 1-1 liverpool posted on january 17, 2017 by peterg this match between two of the game’s biggest rivals possessed more frenzy than finesse as zlatan ibrahimovic equalised with less than 10-minutes remaining to deny liverpool an impressive win. jose mourinho’s side headed into this match on the back of a nine-game winning streak across all competitions while jurgen klopp’s liverpool had been stuttering of late compared to their early season/autumn form which saw them sit second before the latest round of fixtures. lineups for united, marcos rojo returned from injury to continue his unexpectedly successful partnership with phil jones at the heart of the defence. liverpool, meanwhile, had captain jordan henderson back in the side following an injury lay-off since the victory at home to man city on new year’s eve. unfortunately for the reds, nathaniel clyne, had to pull out with an abdominal problem which provided 18-year-old trent alexander-arnold with the daunting task of making his first start in the premier league at arguably the toughest venue for a liverpool player. the full-back had a couple of nervous moments in an otherwise solid performance. liverpool’s initial formation seemed more of a diamond behind divock origi and roberto firmino. the pressing and industrious efforts of both players was probably what tipped klopp to choose them ahead of the undeniably talented daniel sturridge. nullify carrick the aim of the diamond was to prevent time and space on the ball for michael carrick who has despite being 35-years-old, proven to be a key figure in providing balance and penetration from midfield thanks to his often-immaculate passing. adam lallana – who was regularly at the top of the diamond – along with firmino would press and harry carrick as well as his teammates when looking to play the ball from their defensive and middle third. this led to carrick completing far fewer passes than during his previous league appearance at old trafford during the 3-1 victory over sunderland. liverpool’s plan stifled carrick’s impact so much so that mourinho replaced the deep-lying playmaker with scouser wayne rooney who needed just one more goal to eclipse sir bobby charlton’s record for man utd…not that anyone had mentioned it. the same combination of lallana and firmino almost dispossessed jones on the edge of his area but fortunately for the former blackburn defender, his teammate rojo was on hand to put the ball out for a corner. that subsequent corner led to paul pogba – who had his attempted takeover of twitter frequently plasted on the advertising hoardings around the pitch – giving away a penalty. the big summer signing was regularly obstructed from marking dejan lovren during the first several set-pieces and this one saw his desperate attempt at compensating some lost ground result in a clear handball. the nerveless james milner converted for his sixth goal (penalty) of the season to give liverpool the lead on 27-minutes. carrick was restricted to fewer passes and the defensive part of the middle third due to liverpool’s pressing. counter options whilst man utd created a couple of good chances for pogba and henrik mkhitaryan either side of the goal, liverpool were always looking to exploit their opponents on the break. origi – who did the dirty work but failed to provide a big enough threat in attack or retain possession well enough – was often drifting to the left hoping to capitalise on the space vacated by the marauding antonio valencia. it nearly paid off when the belgian forward got goal side of rojo but was unable to create a clear shooting opportunity as the home side’s defence tracked back. a more experienced player may have gone down under the challenge from rojo, potentially earning the argentinian a red card as he tangled with origi. origi spent more time down the left side with valencia often providing attacking width down the right. the half-time change of rooney for carrick saw mourinho adopt more of a 4-2-3-1 formation and this led to further opportunities on the break for liverpool. but those only truly began to materialise when coutinho replaced origi on the hour-mark as the brazilian provided a composure on the ball that his teammates had been lacking during the opening period of the second-half. despite man utd enjoying more possession and having a more attacking line-up, liverpool created more opportunities, often through counter-attacks. fellaini/direct play keen to maintain his side’s unbeaten run and avoid falling further behind liverpool, mourinho introduced marouane fellaini which naturally saw an additional target to ibrahimovic for the long, direct balls. prior to fellaini’s introduction, the red devils averaged 0.7 attempted long passes per minute. but from the 76th minute onwards, that increased to 1.07 with a lower percentage success rate. in terms of crosses, pre-fellaini saw 0.24 attempts (1/18) compared to 0.71 (the graphic doesn’t include valencia’s assist for ibrahimovic’s equaliser) post-fellaini. they were also far more successful with those crosses at a 40% rate compared to 5.6% during the first 76-minutes. three of those crosses were in build up to the goal as fellaini’s header clipped the post before valencia crossed the loose ball for ibrahimovic’s improvised header. it’s frowned upon by the purists but it’s clearly an asset and option for mourinho to utilise should his team need to put further pressure on their opponents during the latter periods of a game. in this case, the pragmatism often associated with the confident portuguese manager once again paid off. both sides dealt with many more clearances in the second half as the game opened up following a more tentative first-45. three times as many clearances for man utd and twice as many for liverpool. stats while it wouldn’t have been hard, this fixture provided more entertainment than the corresponding tie as the graphics show. six more attempts on goal, three more on target and three times as many corners. what’s particularly noticeable is the change in approach from man utd which would have been expected given their run of form and the fact they were the home side. at anfield, they only managed 259 passes and 35% possession but at the theatre of dreams, that rose to 374 and 55%. the dour encounter earlier in the season saw 768 passes as united defended deeply in numbers. on sunday, there were fewer passes (658) as the game was played at a higher pace with more direct approaches from both sides. summary given liverpool’s form heading into this much-hyped game and the selection issues which included joel matip’s unavailability due to ongoing issues with cameroon and fifa; this point would have been accepted by most liverpool fans prior to kick-off. but despite the absentees, they’ll be disappointed not to have come away with a win having led for so long and conceding a late equaliser. they can at least take solace from the fact they now have 17 games remaining, 10 of which are at home – more than any other top six rival. they’ll be hoping to make the most of that advantage as they look to maintain a title challenge despite chelsea’s run of 14 wins from their last 15 games, which puts the blues seven-points clear of liverpool and 12 ahead of man utd. that will probably see mourinho’s focus turn more to a top four finish than a title challenge even though they’ve extended their unbeaten run to 16 for both sides this draw will provide positives as man utd can compare to the state they were before the previous game against liverpool while klopp’s men showed a slightly different side through a dogged and organised performance in defence, led by man of the match lovren. in spite of the positives, it’s chelsea, tottenham and arsenal who would have enjoyed the “tower of power’s” (to quote martin tyler) equaliser the most. epl results (gameweek 21): tottenham 4-0 west brom burnley 1-0 southampton hull 3-1 2016/17 season epl gameweek 20: tottenham 2-0 chelsea posted on january 5, 2017 by peterg london rivals tottenham and chelsea took part in their first game of 2017 as the blues looked to extend their premier league winning streak to 14 matches. standing in their way were a tottenham side who had scored eight in their previous two games thanks to 4-1 victories at both southampton and watford. in the corresponding fixture, antonio conte’s men came out on top in a 2-1 win despite pochettino’s players taking the lead and putting in a particularly dominant first-half performance at stamford bridge. with liverpool dropping points at sunderland two-days earlier, chelsea had the chance to extend their lead at the top to eight points. but spurs’ win saw them climb to third and ensure that only 10-points separate first from sixth. lineups compared to the reverse tie in late november, chelsea – like they have been for the vast majority of this impressive run – were unchanged, while tottenham had two changes which made a big difference to their formation at white hart lane. opting to go toe-to-toe with chelsea’s 3-4-3, pochettino went with a 3-4-2-1. this essentially stifled their opponents in an attacking sense with only eden hazard profiting from one of conte’s well-rehearsed counter-attacks. unfortunately for the travelling fans, the belgian playmaker was unable to direct his left-foot shot on goal having broken the offside trap early on. toby alderweireld and danny rose were always going to be missed by tottenham at the bridge and their presence this time around allowed the formation adjustment. with rose and kyle walker offering great pace and width from the wing-back positions, alderweireld was able to marshal the defence with eric dier and jan vertonghen either side. this wasn’t an option for pochettino last year as even back-up left-back, ben davies, was absent. tottenham’s line up was much more a like for like than the previous fixture between these two sides. obviously kane was the target man and not alli as suggested here. better balance while conte and chelsea have revived the 3-4-3/ 3-4-2-1 formation, pochettino and tottenham are arguably the league’s best equipped team to carry it out. the back three they had during this match has a better and more natural balance than chelsea’s, which includes cesar azpilicueta, david luiz and gary cahill. spaniard azpilicueta is a fine defender but naturally a full-back, while cahill isn’t left-footed. for spurs, the two defenders either side of the central player have experience playing full-back but are predominantly central players. this leads to a more compact shape when out of possession but comfortable to widen the field of play when having the ball. this then encourages the wing-backs (rose and walker) to push higher up the pitch in support of the front three. with wing-backs, it is often a case of who can pin the other back. too defensive leads to the team lacking width and instead forming a flat five. azpilicueta’s tendency to pull wide as a natural full-back allows moses to push forwards like he prefers. but this can leave a vulnerable area between the right-centre and centre-back which happened to be where alli penetrated. vertonghen was far more advanced than cahill which was partly the reason for eriksen finding space to provide the assists. walker is far more established in this position than moses who is still learning the role. the england international’s advanced and wide position is a real asset for spurs. rose mirrors his teammate walker on the left while alonso – who was late tracking back for the second goal – doesn’t possess the same pace to recover from surges forward. wanyama v kante in the middle of the pitch, it became a two v two as victor wanyama and mousa dembele battled it out against n’golo kante and nemanja matic. wanyama, the summer signing from southampton, was a powerful force against the highly-rated kante. the kenyan recovered more than twice as many balls as his french counterpart (nine to four), had a higher passing percentage (84.6% to 76.7%), made more tackles (5/6 to 4/7) and suffered more fouls (two to zero), while managing more interceptions (two to one), blocks (one to zero) and clearances (three to one). kante’s incident that led to a shot was forced by wanyama’s pressing and strength. wanyama had a real presence in the middle of the pitch. déjà vu both of tottenham’s goals were scored by the same player (dele alli), provided by the same crosser (christian eriksen) who received the pass from the same player (walker) from the same side (right). for the first goal, eriksen dropped off as walker sucked in three chelsea players (alonso, matic and cahill) before cutting the ball back to the dane. the latter two plus kante couldn’t get out to eriksen quick enough as alli ghosted in between moses and azpilicueta to head home. the space exploited by alli was a result of cahill pushing out on the left which led to luiz and azpilicueta moving across. but with moses slightly too far forwards, there was a gap which allowed alli to head home unchallenged on the break of half-time. for tottenham’s and alli’s second, alonso over commits on walker who again cuts the ball back to eriksen. cahill then committed himself to a block as the england international tried to make up ground on eriksen and avoid a repeat of the opener. but this time, tottenham’s playmaker – whose return to form was triggered by a goal scoring appearance in the reverse fixture – dummied the cross before producing an even better ball than his first to leave alli with a close-range header. courtois should have made himself bigger but that probably wouldn’t have prevented alli from getting his third brace on the bounce. it was a game of few clear chances with spurs scoring both of their attempts in the area. chelsea, meanwhile, had six attempts in the box but only one on target. comparison of stats  the two graphics reveal that in both fixtures between these sides this season, the away team has had more possession and shots. the home side, meanwhile, had fewer passes and corners yet more tackles. both matches also featured goals in the final minute of the first-half. most notable, however, is the lack of shots on target during the most recent encounter with tottenham showing a particularly ruthless streak while limiting chelsea to few clear opportunities. summary pochettino matched conte with his formation as his players outshone their opponents. aside from bringing the top six closer together, this match could conceivably provide the blueprint not for how to beat the blues but for how spurs can set-up in future matches, particularly against the sides around them. chelsea will be disappointed with the nature of the goals and the inevitable end of their run. but conte will be further encouraged to find players either in this transfer window or the next that suit this system slightly better, particularly with a lack of wing-back options beyond alonso and moses. the combination of balance, application and conversion saw tottenham claim a victory that might propel them to serious title contenders for a second consecutive season. epl results (gameweek 20): middlesbrough 0-0 leicester everton 3-0 southampton man city 2-1 burnley sunderland 2-2 liverpool west brom 3-1 hull west ham 0-2 man utd bournemouth 3-3 arsenal crystal palace 1-2 swansea stoke 2-0 watford tottenham 2-0 chelsea posted in england, epl 2016/17 season epl gameweek 19: liverpool 1-0 man city posted on january 2, 2017 by peterg the final premier league game of 2016 saw two of the top three battle it out in a much-anticipated game. unfortunately for the spectators, it failed to live up to expectations as a solitary goal decided a tentative affair between the division’s top two scorers prior to gameweek 19. line-ups midfielder emre can replaced forward divock origi as jurgen klopp opted to return roberto firmino to his preferred central position with adam lallana moving forwards into the wide left position. firmino’s ability to press, intercept and defend from the front would have heavily influenced his manager’s thinking, particularly against a side known for wanting to play from the back and not always succeeding. man city welcomed back sergio aguero following his four-match suspension while pablo zabaleta and aleksandar kolarov replaced bacary sagna and gael clichy at full-back. pep guardiola would have hoped kolarov’s ability from set-pieces could prove telling against a side whose defensive deficiencies from deadballs had been heavily scrutinised. possession and shape a fight for ball retention was predicted with both sides top of the league for possession this season. but surprisingly, liverpool ended up allowing man city to have the ball before looking to counter through selective pressing and quick turnovers. man city enjoyed more of the ball with 57% of the possession. the goal was an outcome of this as yaya toure delayed on a central free-kick before lofting a ball to kolarov which left the serbian with only one clear pass option. unfortunately for city, kolarov’s attempt at that pass was loose as the pressure led him to play it first-time. georginio wijnaldum and firmino retrieved the ball before the brazilian played a long ball out wide on the safe side of lallana, preventing zabaleta from making an early challenge. the former southampton player then found himself to the left of the area before clipping in an inviting cross for wijnaldum to power home with a firm header. the dutchman benefitted from having the run on kolarov as he timed his movement to perfection. taking an eighth minute lead only further encouraged liverpool to drop off their opponents and restrict the service to aguero and co as mentioned by klopp during one of his pre-match interviews. the reds would form a five-man semi-circle to shield their defence with firmino in the centre shepherding the citizens to go down one particular side. that subsequently made it harder for balls to be played through the middle while claudio bravo found himself going long more often than usual. bravo’s first-half passes at anfield compared to his debut at old trafford. liverpool often forced the longer route which only led to one successful pass. quiet quartet a key aspect of the game was liverpool’s organisation which limited the impact of man city’s front four. both teams struggled in possession as they misplaced a number of passes. city were 4.4% down on their season average pass completion while the home side were a massive 13.1% worse off than usual. but despite the heavy media focus on set-pieces and goalkeeping issues, liverpool have conceded the fewest shots on goal per game with just 7.7 – man city are second with 8.3. it was this level of defending – which ragnar klavan deserves plenty of credit having seamlessly steeped in for the injured joel matip in recent weeks – that restricted guardiola’s side to just two attempts on target, both of which were from outside the area. of the nine in total, only two were taken from inside the 18-yard box and both were from improbable angles. and while liverpool only managed five attempts and one on target, they did come within inches of creating one-on-one situations on two occasions during the opening 45-minutes. the game had limited goalmouth action despite pre-match expectations. six of man city’s nine attempts came from the front four of aguero, david silva, raheem sterling and kevin de bruyne who were playing in a game against one of the other top six sides for the first time this season. despite that, it was still the fewest combined efforts by those players with a total of eight achieved against man utd and arsenal (minus aguero) as well as tottenham (minus de bruyne) while the chelsea loss yielded 10 (minus sterling). in terms of take ons, sterling was clearly advised to target milner at left-back with 13 attempted dribbles but the former liverpool winger only succeeded with six. fourteen of the 17 attempted crosses came from de bruyne and sterling yet only one led to an opportunity which was a blocked kolarov volley from a second-half corner. most notable were the number of completed passes in the attacking third. at anfield, de bruyne, silva and sterling only managed a total of 32 while the same three players finished with 69 at home to arsenal. only the loss at tottenham can compare with saturday but the 28 listed below was without de bruyne. his replacement that day, jesus navas, finished with 11, even though he was substituted in the 66th minute, which takes the total for that match to 39. guardiola’s record of two wins and three losses against the title rivals doesn’t look favourable compared to klopp’s three wins and two draws. in order to improve on that in the second half of the season, the spaniard will need his quartet to not only play together more often but also contribute more in the crunch games. a = aguero |b = de bruyne | s = silva | st = sterling subs involving the four players made during the above games: – sterling came off after 60 mins v man utd – de bruyne came off after 90 mins v man utd – sterling came off after 87 mins v tottenham – de bruyne came off after 84 mins v arsenal summary liverpool had less possession and fewer attempts on goal yet they deserved the win such was the lack of threat from man city. the two-time premier league champions just didn’t do enough and that’s a combination of liverpool’s organised defence and city’s poor attacking display, particularly during the first half. they now find themselves fifth and 10-points off chelsea while liverpool remain six-points behind as like a treadmill, they have to run just to stand still in the title race at the moment. the reds and fellow challengers will be hoping that tottenham can finally put an end to chelsea’s winning run as the blues go in search of equaling a league record 14 on wednesday. but monday will see both liverpool and man city take on sunderland (away) and burnley (home) respectively to potentially add further pressure on antonio conte’s men. epl results (gameweek 19): hull 2-2 everton burnley 4-1 sunderland chelsea 4-2 stoke leicester 1-0 west ham man utd 2-1 southampton 1-4 tottenham posted on december 30, 2016 by peterg two of the league’s top three defences faced one another at st. mary’s in the remaining match of gameweek 18. mauricio pochettino returned to his former club with added pressure as the four teams above his side had already won, leaving tottenham 13-points off leaders chelsea prior to kick-off. claude puel’s southampton, meanwhile, came into the fixture having kept four clean sheets in their previous five league games at st. mary’s. line-ups the french manager changed his entire midfield three following their win at bournemouth while club captain jose fonte returned to the side in place of maya yoshida. for tottenham, harry winks was replaced by moussa sissoko as pochettino reverted to their more common formation of 4-2-3-1. fast start and high press the home side got off to a flying start as virgil van dijk headed in james ward-prowse’s free-kick after just over a minute’s play. it was another set-piece goal conceded by tottenham who still have issues when defending crosses into their box. the saints went on to pin their opponents back through high and intense pressing. spurs’ frustrations were evident as mousa dembele received a yellow card for dissent. but southampton’s dominance subsided once dele alli scored a header of his own in the 19th minute. small margins the england midfielder profited from a deflected cross off nathan redmond which allowed alli to find the top corner unchallenged. harry kane then completed the turnaround early in the second half as he made it three headers for the night from a christian eriksen corner. but the most controversial moment arrived soon after when alli was adjudged to have been brought down by redmond as he went through on goal from the angle. referee mike dean ensured everyone knew where the penalty spot was before belatedly deciding that redmond should be sent off having not made a genuine attempt to take the ball. southampton fans and players protested with the initial contact taking place outside of the area and the awarding of a penalty alone seeming harsh enough. fortunately for them, kane missed the spot-kick as his standing foot inadvertently raised the loose turf, triggering the skied effort. but that all but killed the game as pochettino’s men controlled proceedings and managed to extend their advantage in the closing stages. son heung-min showed great composure as like alli, he too benefitted from a deflection on the assist. oriol romeu failed to intercept eriksen’s through ball which found the south korean who slotted past fraser forster in front of the travelling supporters. the gap substitute son exploited was a result of southampton’s late attempts to find an equaliser. eriksen’s 40-yard diagonal pass ensured his teammate was able to take advantage of being 10-yards goal side of right-back cedric soares. alli then added more gloss to the victory as he grabbed his second two-minutes later with southampton’s defensive line penetrated with ease. deserved win despite the possibly unfair sending off, tottenham were worthy winners as they bounced back from a difficult start. analysing the three telling periods – prior to alli’s equaliser, then pre-and post-red card – validates this. tottenham enjoyed far more passes in the attacking third than the home side. southampton compared to the other two periods, from the start to the 18th minute, southampton had 62.5% of their total attempts at goal in just 20% of the total game time. unfortunately, puel’s side’s numbers only increased in the defensive areas (clearances, ball recoveries, interceptions and tackles) from then on. furthermore, they managed less than half the number of attacking third passes and crosses per minute during the remainder of the match compared to their fast start. tottenham their opponents on the other hand really got a grip of the game once they drew level. in fact, that led to their best period of the three, despite playing against 10 men for the last 33 minutes. from the 18th to the 57th minute, spurs had more passes, attacking third passes, crosses, ball recoveries and tackles than the other periods. tottenham’s suffering during the opening exchanges was apparent by their 0.44 clearances per minute. that was a game high across both sides during the three periods as southampton racked up the most crosses per minute within that same phase. interestingly, the post-red period from the 57th to the 90th minute failed to produce any game high stats. this was most likely due to spurs using their extra man to take control as players began to tire. of those starting, only hugo lloris and kane – the two end points of their formation – were out passed by any southampton player. those highlighted in yellow are the top stats per minute in each category. eriksen and van dijk eriksen appears to be hitting top form as he racked up another two assists. the danish playmaker finished top for attacking third passes (32/38) and chances created (five). for southampton, van dijk was the standout performer despite being at the heart of a defence that leaked four goals. the dutchman has recently been linked with a move away and his performance would do his value no harm as he finished top for attacking aerial duels (4/4), defensive aerial duels (3/4), ball recoveries (nine) and interceptions (three) in addition to his goal. summary any win at southampton is a notable result but to bounce back from a difficult opening 18 minutes was particularly impressive. no doubt pochettino will be happier with the game management and patience than the three-goal victory. to lose 4-1 after such a strong start will be disappointing for southampton who fell foul to a few fine margins. they’ll hope to return to winning ways at home to west brom on new year’s eve. spurs’ fans can look forward to their side building on this momentum away at watford. but they’ll naturally be keeping an eye on their following match against chelsea on wednesday 4th january as they seek revenge for the ‘battle of the bridge’ from last season. epl results (gameweek 18): watford 1-1 crystal tottenham posted in england, epl 2016/17 season epl gameweek 17: everton 0-1 liverpool posted on december 20, 2016 by peterg sky’s department for renaming days of the week once again cursed a much-anticipated fixture as mersey monday provided general misery unless you were supporting the red side of liverpool. everton came into this derby with their city rivals off the back of a well-earned win at home to arsenal. liverpool, meanwhile, comfortably defeated middlesbrough at the riverside stadium as they too looked to put an end to some stuttering form in recent weeks. line-ups there was just one change across both teams from the previous games as ramiro funes mori replaced the suspended phil jagielka in everton’s central defence. fast start many expected a fast and furious start by the home side as they looked to maintain the momentum from their late victory against the gunners. the goodison park faithful were particularly raucous at kick-off as the toffees went in search of their first win over liverpool since 2010. long, direct balls to striker romelu lukaku appeared to be the go to tactic. the belgian target man proved fairly successful in disrupting his markers as he went on to win an impressive 11/17 attacking aerial duels (nine more than second placed mori and sadio mane). although, lukaku’s physicality failed to churn out any opportunities of note in what was a disappointing and turgid display by both teams in the attacking thirds. once liverpool – who misplaced a number of passes early on – had survived the first quarter, everton began to tire and struggled to sufficiently support lukaku in attack. the tables below show how everton dropped off after a full-throttle opening 23-minutes with less than half as many passes per minute during the final three-quarters of the match. the only numbers that improved during that period were tackles and interceptions, evidence of more defensive duties and a lack of possession. lack of chances ronaldo koeman’s side only managed four attempts at goal with two blocked and two off target during the opening 45-minutes. the only chances worth reviewing at the break were funes mori’s header from a corner and divock origi’s miscued attempt following some nice build up play by the reds. everton’s failure to capitalise on their best phase of the game left them vulnerable to defeat with lukaku looking increasingly isolated as the game progressed. the second half saw liverpool get a grip on proceedings and roberto firmino should have given his team the lead early in the second half. the brazilian was thwarted by martin stekelenburg having outmuscled funes mori beforehand. it was no wonder everton struggled to provide any real threat in attack as they only managed three successful passes into their opponent’s area compared to liverpool’s 22. lovren key to that was the performance of lovren who rose to the occasion and seemed to thrive in his battle with lukaku. the croatian defender finished top for passing (69/81), clearances (11), headed clearances (8) and defensive duels (5/7). the former southampton man was often allowed to have possession of the ball down liverpool’s right as he entered into everton’s half. presumably that was to try and directly matchup lukaku with klavan for a long ball should possession get quickly turned over by the deep defending toffees. bench options koeman had few attacking options from his bench to change the game, particularly as two of his subs were forced by injuries. both james mccarthy and stekelenburg were withdrawn from the battle at half-time and in the 64th minute respectively. jurgen klopp, meanwhile, was able to welcome back daniel sturridge for his first appearance in a month. the 82nd minute substitute would inadvertently provide the assist for the injury-time winning goal as his scuffed shot struck the foot of the post before mane tapped in. second half whilst koeman labelled his team’s first-half performance as their best of the season – probably in reference to their organisation and intensity – the second did little to excite evertonians. liverpool’s and everton’s responses after half-time were polar opposites. one looked like they were just starting while the other seemed happy to call it an early night. as the table below shows, liverpool completed six times as many passes in the attacking third than their opponents during the second-half. they also had four times as many attempts at goal. everton found their defence under more pressure with three times as many clearances compared to the first-half. but one stat which stands out the most is the number of crosses attempted by a home side that was regularly utilising the long-ball approach from the start. just one cross in the entire second-half against a defence that is supposedly vulnerable to balls into their box with a striker of lukaku’s stature is far from acceptable but a measure of how dominant and in control liverpool were after the break. first-half attacking third passes comparison. second-half attacking third passes comparison. summary it’s hard to argue that liverpool didn’t deserve to leave with all three-points and it could have harshly been two-nil had seamus coleman not cleared firmino’s goal bound effort off the line as the clock edged close to the 100-minute mark. koeman can take positives from his side’s spirit and commitment in their last two home encounters against title challenges. but the fact everton ran out of steam, ideas and options would have concerned the dutch manager. such clear limitations are likely to be addressed during the january transfer window as rumours of interest in man utd duo memphis depay and morgan schneiderlin persist. for liverpool, this could prove to be a vital victory as they reduce chelsea’s lead to six-points before christmas and climb up to second in the league. klopp would have enjoyed his side showing patience and control in the second period after a wild first 45, not to mention a fifth clean sheet in seven games too. if the reds can maintain this form, then they’ll be involved in a title race for only the third time in the last 15 years. but they’ll be far better equipped for such a challenge if they can acquire a pacey attacker to provide further depth to the squad. that will be particularly important in the absence of top scorer mane who is heading to the african cup of nations with senegal while danny ings is out for the season and sturridge has the wrong kind of reliable injury record. but if this win told us anything, it’s that liverpool can also win ugly. epl results (gameweek 17): crystal palace 0-1 chelsea middlesbrough 3-0 swansea stoke 2-2 leicester sunderland 1-0 watford west ham 1-0 hull west brom 0-2 man utd bournemouth 1-3 went into this fixture looking to arrest a slump that had seen the toffees earn just one win in their previous 11 games. arsene wenger’s arsenal, meanwhile, were very much riding the crest of some good form having not lost in the league since their opening day of the season defeat to liverpool. the gunners knew that a fourth consecutive league win would take them level with table toppers chelsea who would travel to sunderland the following night. line-ups ronald koeman made four changes to his side after their disappointing display at vicarage road against watford. phil jagielka replaced ramiro funes mori in defence, while gareth barry lost his place to the ever promising but sporadically fulfilling, ross barkley. both wide players were changed as the dutch manager opted for ener valencia and aaron lennon instead of gerard deulofeu and kevin mirallas. the only change wenger made to his starting 11 was enforced by the injury shkodran mustafi sustained during saturday’s victory over stoke. hector bellerin started at right-back with gabriel moving into his natural centre-back position. slow start arsenal made the better start as they naturally fed on their recent run and their opponents’ anxiety but there was little action until alexis sanchez fortuitously opened the scoring. the chilean forward has been his side’s stand out player having scored seven and set up two in his previous six games. that tally rose to eight when his deflected and fairly tame free-kick from the edge of everton’s penalty area deflected off a wrong-footed ashley williams before evading martin stekelenburg’s dive. the goal was a fair reflection of the opening exchanges. most were expecting arsenal to extend their advantage as mesut ozil regularly found pockets of space in the final third. but despite falling behind and frustrations increasing amongst the home support, everton began to turn the game into a battle of desire over skill. valencia was appreciated for his tenacity in closing down opponents and riding challenges which raised the pace of the game. this encouraged the goodison park faithful to get behind their beloved team. the difference between everton’s first 30 minutes and the other 68 (including injury-time) was more productive than arsenal’s. the home side attempted and completed more passes per minute in the attacking third during that second phase while their attempts at petr cech’s goal increased three-fold. arsenal experienced a greater increase in attacking third passes – partly due to games typically opening up as players tire and time runs out – but wenger’s men failed to convert those passes into goal scoring opportunities with a minimal increase of 0.03 shots per minute compared to everton’s 0.14. gueye in midfield, idrissa gueye started to get a stronger foothold in the game as the former aston villa player finished top for ball recoveries (12), tackles (six from six) and interceptions (four). his equivalent in arsenal’s team, francis coquelin, only managed five ball recoveries, four from four tackles and one interception. granted he did have granit xhaka alongside him to share the defensive duties; the swiss midfielder achieving eight ball recoveries, four from eight tackles and two interceptions. leicester’s former joint assistant manager and head of recruitment, steve walsh – who joined everton as their director of football in the summer – described 2016’s title-winning midfield as a three-man set-up. danny drinkwater in the middle and n’golo kante either side. those who watched the champions during the last campaign and now chelsea, will appreciate those sentiments and gueye appears to be heading in a similar direction, which bodes well for the toffees. gueye completed more passes than any other everton player. defending crosses everton quite rightly looked to exploit arsenal’s softened defence through the physicality of romelu lukaku. with two attacking full-backs capable of providing dangerous balls into the box in leighton baines and seamus coleman, it came as no surprise that everton attempted 26 crosses to arsenal’s 10. everton exploited arsenal with crosses into the box as two of the 26 attempts led to their goals. the majority of everton’s crosses came from coleman’s side as valencia naturally tucked into a more central area which encouraged the marauding full-back to provide the width. but it was an in-swinging cross from the right-foot of left-back baines that found coleman who had gambled and ghosted in at the far-post to header home. positioning himself between the laurent koscielny and nacho monreal meant the ireland international was unchallenged to score his second in three home games. the laws of probability led to an 86th minute winner as another ball in the box highlighted arsenal’s defensive deficiencies and everton’s determination. williams was able to atone for his part in the opening goal with an unstoppable header that raised the roof of both the net and stadium to give koeman a much-needed victory. two of the league’s more attacking right-backs were on display with coleman getting into deeper positions than bellerin and scoring the equaliser before half-time. shot shy arsenal the gunners’ only effort on target was sanchez’s goal in the 20th minute until the chaotic melee at the death which so nearly resulted in an equaliser. that’s obviously not good enough for a side looking to challenge at the top, particularly when they looked so comfortable during the first half an hour. symbolic of a poor night in front of goal was ozil’s squandered opportunity with the scores at 1-1 in the second half. the former real madrid playmaker should have scored following sanchez’s cutback from the left but failed to keep his effort down. besides arsenal’s goal, their only other shots on target came in injury-time. summary this deserved win for everton proved that it isn’t always skill and flair that’s needed to succeed in the premier league. their application and effort having gone behind would have pleased the manager and supporters, particularly ahead of the merseyside derby next monday when they host local rivals, liverpool. for arsenal, this was an opportunity missed as their unbeaten run comes to an end. wenger and co will be hoping to bounce back in their next game at man city – who sit directly below them in fourth – on sunday. epl results (gameweek 16): bournemouth 1-0 leicester everton 2-1 arsenal middlesbrough 0-3 liverpool sunderland 0-1 chelsea west ham 1-0 burnley crystal palace 1-2 man utd man city 2-0 watford most frequent drawers came up against each other at old trafford with jose mourinho looking to put an end to a run of four consecutive home draws. in the opposition dugout, mauricio pochettino was hoping his side could grab the win that would take them level on points with man city following their defeat at leicester on saturday. during the pre-match interview, mourinho said that tottenham are the best team in the league. a questionable statement given that prior to kick-off, they found themselves in fifth position having drawn six of their 14 games and failed to qualify from a favourable champions league group. but perhaps mourinho was providing himself with a readymade excuse should his side once again fail to win or further enhance the victory should it arrive, which it subsequently did. home form the interpretation of the four draws man utd’s fans have had to endure in recent weeks can swing either way. drawing games that they should be winning based on the balance of play suggests that it’s not a disaster and if you’re mourinho, just really bad luck. the stats below show that especially against the ‘lesser’ sides, man utd did more than enough to win the game. but others would point to the team’s inability to convert that dominance/control into three-points as a cause for concern. the late equalisers conceded to stoke, arsenal and away at everton last week also raised questions over the team’s mentality. areas where previous mourinho sides would normally excel. line-ups mourinho named the same back four for the fourth consecutive league game while michael carrick made his fourth start from the last five league matches. henrikh mkhitaryan kept his place following a positive return to the side in the last fortnight, including an impressive solo strike in the europa league against zorya luhansk last thursday. for spurs, defender toby alderweireld returned to the starting line-up having been out since october through injury. possession and chances tottenham, despite being the away side, actually repeated united’s previous failings as they struggled to make more of their dominance with the ball. the lilywhites enjoyed 60% of possession but could only create one clear-cut opportunity, and that came from a set-piece in the second half.  unfortunately for pochettino’s men, christian eriksen’s delivery found a misfiring victor wanyama who failed to direct his header on target despite being unchallenged at the far-post. the free-kick aside, man utd’s defence was organised and resolute throughout. that made it difficult for star striker harry kane who ended up having a quiet afternoon. his efforts to break down the dogged backline weren’t helped by spurs’ lack of creativity in the final third. man utd, meanwhile, were more direct in their approach, utilising the speed of anthony martial and mkhitaryan on the counter. the latter would provide the only goal of the game with a thunderous finish after a turnover of possession in the home side’s half. mourinho’s team showed a greater level of efficiency with the ball and that led to better scoring opportunities. this saw 60% of their attempts on hugo lloris’ goal come from inside the penalty area while tottenham could only manage 25% of theirs. tottenham created very little in man utd’s area with wanyama missing their best chance. passes further to that, tottenham only completed six passes inside the penalty area, less than half of man utd’s 14. a clear indication of the opposing approaches was highlighted by lloris completing more passes than any united player apart from paul pogba and ander herrera. the french international goalkeeper received three times as many backpasses as david de gea at the other end (18 to six). that goes some way to explaining how united’s centre-backs, phil jones and marcos rojo only completed nine passes between them in the entire game, while their defensive counterparts, alderweireld and jan vertonghen, managed 52. tottenham retained possession in their defensive third while man utd were clearly under instructions to avoid this so to nullify their opponents high press. a lack of interest in playing keep ball in the defensive third is understandable against tottenham who have a reputation for pressing high and fast. herrera’s passing stats were symbolic of his man utd’s strategy. the spaniard managed to create the most chances (four), including the only goal of the game, from his total of 26 passes. he was also top for ball recoveries (11) and second for tackles (5/8). for tottenham, wanyama was their top passer in the final third with 15, only outdone by man utd’s pogba with 20. this suggests that united were defending deep, content with tottenham’s most defensive midfielder and weakest passer having more of the ball in the final third. it also endorses that man utd’s direct approach often went through pogba who is able to enjoy more of a free role when carrick is partnering herrera in midfield. both players were their side’s top passer in the attacking third. pogba was far more penetrative than the limited wanyama, a tactic imposed by mourinho. tottenham’s depth with just over half an hour remaining and the game delicately poised at one-nil, pochettino introduced moussa sissoko for son heung-min. the french midfielder – who has come in for recent criticism from his manager following his big summer move – put in the sort of performance that was more commonly associated with his national side than his club last season. he even managed to finish with a game high of four successful take-ons despite playing only a third of the match. but his supremacy over matteo darmian down man utd’s left failed to conjure up the equaliser the travelling supporters were pining for and spurs’ other two subs highlighted a lack of squad depth in attack. with erik lamela and vincent janssen still absent through injury, pochettino could only bring on harry winks and georges kévin-nkoudou to try and spark the attack into life. compare that to the bench mourinho had at his disposal and it’s no wonder pochettino is so highly regarded. the six outfield players on united’s bench were wayne rooney, juan mata, marcus rashford, marouane fellaini, daley blind and eric bailly. all of those players, bar bailly, could make a difference in the attacking third. that bench cost over £130m in transfer fees with tottenham’s around £60m. sissoko made a big impact having come on just before the hour mark. the frenchman had a lot of joy down the right-wing. summary mourinho needed this win more than pochettino and that was clear by his animated performance on the touchline in the closing moments as he berated substitute rashford for his lack of application. the portuguese manager displayed his tactical brilliance by avoiding tottenham’s high press while encouraging their weakest ball-playing midfielder to have possession and opting for efficiency over dominance, despite being the home side. he’s also benefitted from the resurgence of mkhitaryan who is starting to live up to expectations. the armenian’s rhythm, however, appears to be disrupted for a few games after injuring his ankle following a foul by the game’s most fouled player, danny rose. tottenham will expect to return to winning ways with home games against hull on wednesday and then burnley at the weekend. man utd meanwhile, have tricky away trips to crystal palace and west brom – who were unfortunate not to have held out for a creditable draw at stamford bridge earlier in the day. epl results (gameweek 15): watford 3-2 strongest tacticians. despite a slow start, what unfolded after the break went beyond pre-match expectations. line-ups pep guardiola was alleged to have matched antonio conte’s increasingly popular 3-4-2-1. however, this was actually the third time in the league that the spaniard has used this formation at home, although the previous occasions only yielded two 1-1 draws against everton and southampton respectively. man city therefore had leroy sane and jesus navas in wide midfield positions as oppose to wing-backs which is more relevant to the positioning of victor moses and marcos alonso for chelsea. conte was forced to make one change to his side as they looked to extend their winning run to eight, with cesc fabregas replacing the injured nemanja matic. prior to kick-off, it was city’s wide players and fabregas that could make the difference (positive or negative) aside from the obvious candidates of sergio aguero, diego costa, kevin de bruyne and eden hazard. both sides arguably lined up in a similar formation with aguero (not silva) the lone striker for man city. crosses the more offensive minded sane and navas were given the task to pinback their direct opponents, moses and alonso. this limited chelsea’s width and allowed the outer centre-backs to provide city with wide support from deep when in possession. for much of the game this worked and forced chelsea to adapt by going forwards quicker than usual, utilising the passing range of both fabregas and david luiz. the number and type of passes shows the difference in approach when attacking. city preferred to go down the right with few long balls while chelsea often went long from defence or deep midfield. particularly during the second half, the home side regularly got in behind the wing-backs, especially down alonso’s side as de bruyne favoured penetrative runs into the channel down the right. this led to a number of crosses from man city, but they often failed to find their target, who was normally an outnumbered aguero. city’s 37 crosses to chelsea’s nine suggested that doubling up down the wing’s and taking initiative in the wide areas was part of the plan. and it was therefore unsurprising that city’s only goal came via a cross. gary cahill’s poor attempt at a clearance deflected navas’ ball into his own net just before half-time. man city attempted more than four times as many crosses as chelsea who are a taller side. city’s attempts weren’t just limited to corners. battle of the forwards the league’s two top scorers lined-up in lone striker roles, but while one missed several chances, the other converted his. aguero was twice thwarted by goal-saving blocks, first by cesar azpilicueta following a neat lay-off by sane in the first-half and then cahill redeemed himself in the second period. the argentinian forward – who also forced thibaut courtois into a few saves – was clearly frustrated by his failure to score from any of his six attempts, and went on to receive a straight red for an ugly lunge on luiz in injury-time with the game all but lost. at the other end, diego costa – a forward more commonly associated with disciplinary issues – proved that on his day, he’s as good a target man as any. the former atletico madrid player really came into his own after equalising superbly from fabregas’ inch perfect ball over the top. costa was able to retain the ball as his teammates caught up to support. at times, he appeared to be bullying those around him and gave john stones a difficult afternoon. his one goal from two attempts is a great return for any striker and his ruthlessness provided the trigger to chelsea’s comeback – their second in a week following the home win against tottenham. an assist and a goal saw costa come out on top in the battle of the forwards as aguero failed to find the net from six attempts before getting recklessly sent off. battle of the playmakers de bruyne and hazard are amongst the world’s best in their position and proved why during different periods of the game. both belgians did however squander great chances at key moments. first was hazard, who failed to open the scoring after rounding a stranded claudio bravo. the rejuvenated attacker opted to square a ball across the box, which was easily cleared, instead of shooting at goal from the angle. de bruyne defied physics when he failed to keep down his effort from a few of yards following a drilled cross by navas with the score at 1-0. minutes later, costa equalised. that miss aside and the subsequent loss of concentration, which led to basic errors, de bruyne performed very well. his consistent crossing regularly threatened to result in a goal while he often displayed great composure and awareness through some measured passing in tight spaces. but it was hazard, who’s involvement was sporadic due to city’s dominance of the ball, that had the final say and sealed a vital victory for his side. capitalising on guardiola’s side piling men forwards in search of a late equaliser, hazard ran into the left-channel and was well found by alonso’s long ball. he then breezed past kolarov’s desperate attempt at tracking back before beating bravo with a convincing finish. de bruyne favoured the right and was more involved than his belgian compatriot, hazard, due to his side enjoying more of the possession. but hazard had the final say with chelsea’s third goal. decisive moments luiz escaped a red card in the first half when he barged aguero over following azpilicueta’s under hit back pass. the brazilian defender didn’t play the ball and aguero would have been through on goal had he not been impeded. referee, anthony taylor, allowed play to go on despite clear protests from aguero’s disgruntled teammates and fans. conte took just five minutes into the second half before deciding to introduce willian for pedro. twenty-minutes later, the brazilian broke clear as chelsea turned a dangerous city attack into their second goal via a couple of passes and some impatient defending by nicolas otamendi. just a minute before chelsea took the lead, gael clichy replaced sane on the left, the same channel that willian exploited to devastating effect. another of guardiola’s subs, kelechi iheanacho, failed to have the desired impact as the nigerian forward regularly conceded possession or failed to trouble courtois in goal. one of the times he lost the ball led to chelsea’s third and final goal. if chelsea were clinical, man city were wasteful. the citizens failed to score from any of their three big chances with aguero and de bruyne the biggest culprits while chelsea converted both of theirs. most of man city’s chances were created from wide areas while chelsea had more joy through long central balls, three of which they scored from. summary guardiola wasn’t being blindly biased in the post-match interviews when he said how proud he was of his team’s performance. on another day, two of their star players would score a couple of their big chances and even conte admitted his side were lucky on occasions prior to costa’s equaliser in the 55th minute. but from that moment on, chelsea were far more dangerous in attack as they emphatically punished their opponents when the opportunities arose. now eight wins on the bounce having recently defeated both tottenham and man city, chelsea will rightly be regarded as favourites based on their current form and the lack of european football. man city meanwhile, need to address their defensive issues having just kept two clean sheets in the league all season. they’ll also need to return to winning ways without aguero (four games) and fernandinho (three games) after both players received bans for their roles in the ugly scenes that tainted an entertaining game of football. epl results (gameweek 14): man city 1-3 chelsea crystal palace 3-0 southampton stoke city 2-0 burnley sunderland 2-1 leicester tottenham 5-0 swansea west brom 3-1 29, 2016 by peterg a match between bottom of the table and a team on a five-game losing streak is probably best introduced as a basement battle. that phrase is probably better associated with fight club, which like the defending in this game, no one should talk about. unfortunately, the mumbler has to and couldn’t let one of the premier league’s more dramatic and baffling games pass by without some sort of explanation beyond the fact that alan pardew was involved. line-ups swansea’s manager, bob bradley, stuck with the same starting 11 that was denied a good win at everton last week thanks to seamus coleman’s late equaliser. one noticeable inclusion on the bench was spanish target man, fernando llorente, who didn’t even make the bench at goodison park. pardew, meanwhile, replaced andros townsend with connor wickham following the striker’s goal during the home defeat to man city. set-pieces the standout flaw of both teams in this game was the defending from set-pieces. as a result, only the opening two goals were of any decent quality with the following seven best described as scrappy. it was of no surprise that goals were scored via set-pieces given crystal palace’s ineptitude. only three games ago did pardew claim the manner of liverpool’s two goals from first-half corners was “not like us”. it was even more frustrating for the silver-haired manager having gone into that game looking to exploit their opponents at the other end from set-plays through christian benteke’s aerial prowess. against man city, yaya toure scored an 83rd minute winner when a kevin de bruyne corner was inexplicably allowed to reach the middle of the goal, four-yards out, without ever being more than two-feet off the ground. at the liberty stadium, four of swansea’s goals came via a set-piece, which took crystal palace’s season total to 13, top of the unwanted table and two ahead of hull in second. evidently, incompetently defending dead balls is contagious as swansea brought their tally to nine for the campaign – joint-third with stoke and watford – following the three they conceded on saturday. crystal palace’s obvious weakness on set-plays and zero clean sheets this season makes it puzzling as to why bradley didn’t start with llorente or at least an out-and-out striker. as gifted and influential as gylfi sigurdsson is, he doesn’t provide the aerial threat that saw the former bilbao and juventus forward develop a reputation as one of the best target men in the game a few seasons ago. it was therefore no coincidence that as soon as llorente replaced wayne routledge in the 66th minute, swansea scored from a corner – their 10th and final corner of the game. llorente’s first touch being a header that drew a poor excuse of a clearance from yohan cabaye on the far-post, allowing leroy fer to tap-in. christian beneteke was singled out by match of the day’s phil neville (ext. link?) for numerous lapses of concentration and responsibility when defending. concentration the three occasions where two goals were scored in two-minutes (twice for swansea and once for crystal palace) raises doubts over the players’ mentality. whilst both teams proved to have the spirit and resilience to bounce back from going behind, neither showed they could control the game and hold on to the lead. the only reason swansea won was because they didn’t have time to give up their lead such was the last 20 minutes. passing the game lacked quality in general and not just defensively. no other premier league match over the weekend had fewer completed passes whilst swansea’s and palace’s combined attempted long balls ranked fourth out of the 10 matches. the days of swansea playing possession based football appear to be replaced by a more direct approach in favour of percentages. this is perfectly understandable following the most recent two managers they’ve had in wales not as in-keeping with the swansea philosophy as roberto martinez, brendan rodgers, michael laudrup and garry monk. the swans ranked 13th for completed passes this weekend, 31 below the league average. crystal palace are less interested in retaining possession as they look to quickly get balls to their front two of benteke and wickham. it’s this approach that convinced so many that beneteke would have more joy at selhurst park – despite not yet scoring there – than he did last season with liverpool. this approach was confirmed by palace’s keeper, wayne hennessey, ending the game as his side’s joint-second highest ranking player for attacking third passes, and fifth overall. hennessey regularly went long in search of benteke whereas fabianski often went short. substitutes three of the six substitutions had the desired effect while one got caught up amongst the chaos. bradley’s first was llorente who was awarded man of the match. the american’s second substitution was angel rangel for modou barrow on the 80th minute, five minutes after james tomkins had bundled a goal in to reduce swansea’s lead to 3-2. a full-back for a winger was the defensive move aimed to tighten things up but just four-minutes later, palace had turned the game on its head. the introduction of jefferson montero for kyle naughton – a reverse of bradley’s second change – after palace took the lead proved successful. the colombian winger provided the cross which llorente would eventually equalise from as the home side pinned their opponents back in the remaining minutes. pardew, meanwhile, was forced to replace the injured wickham with townsend in the 52nd minute but he too enjoyed an instant response from his third and final change. bakary sako came on for james mcarthur at 3-2 and was immediately involved in the build-up to jack cork’s own goal. having taken the lead in the 84th minute, pardew would have probably liked to have brought on damien delaney to deal with the inevitable aerial bombardment. but that was taken away from him by wickham’s injury and his decision to swap martin kelly for the more attacking full-back, ezekiel fryers, with just over 20 minutes remaining. swansea attempted the same number of shots in the last half an hour (with more success) as they did in just over the first hour. like swansea, palace also attempted the same number of shots in the last half an hour as they did in just over the first hour. summary despite coming out victorious and getting closer to the teams above them, swansea and bradley will need to address their defensive deficiencies and consider reverting to a 4-2-3-1. llorente would be the focal point of attack and sigurdsson tucked in behind as the playmaker. the likes of routledge, barrow, montero and nathan dyer can provide the width while fer – who has already equalled his previous premier league scoring record of six – and cork can provide a decent central midfield pairing. crystal palace’s form goes from bad to worse with six losses on the bounce and their comical defending showing no signs of ending anytime soon. it’s no wonder they’re the worst league team in the country for 2016 and the pressure is building on the manager who appears to be running out of time to arrest what is becoming commonly known as the pardew-slide, and no, that’s not one of his dance moves. epl results (gameweek 13): burnley 1-2 man city hull 1-1 west brom leicester 2-2 middlesbrough liverpool 2-0 12: tottenham 3-2 west ham posted on november 22, 2016 by peterg tottenham snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with two harry kane goals in the dying moments. but whilst mauricio pochettino’s side continued to be the only unbeaten team in the league, their victory, however dramatic, hid a couple of repetitive issues that might hold spurs back from building on last season. line-ups pochettino altered his formation once more following the adaptation of the 3-4-3 he used at arsenal before the international break. this time, his team’s shape was more akin to a 4-4-2 diamond than the 4-2-3-1 suggested in the graphic below. west ham, meanwhile, continue to suffer from a lack of form or fitness amongst their forwards while captain mark noble was absent due to suspension. spanish goalkeeper, adrian, lost his place to darren randolph as slaven bilic set-up his side in today’s fashionable 3-4-2-1 following antonio conte’s recent success at chelsea. given the personnel available, bilic’s choice made sense, although it would be a big ask of playmaker, manuel lanzini, as part of a midfield duo against tottenham’s equivalent. whilst kane was lining up more alongside janssen, eriksen and dembele played in a more central role than suggested here. for west ham, swapping payet with sakho would give a fairer reflection as to how they lined-up. kane and janssen not working spurs’ line-up saw kane and vincent janssen start together for only the second time this season. much has been made of the dutchman’s lack of goals from open play or kane’s struggles to play with another striker and this game only further validated both claims. janssen is clearly a talented and especially hardworking forward but he’s in danger of joining the failed eredivisie imports of mateja kezman and afonso alves rather than the success stories of ruud van nistelrooy or luis suarez. it’s not completely ludicrous to suggest janssen’s energy is being disproportionately used in areas that aren’t measured against the success of a striker’s performance. his teammate, kane, on the other hand, provided a master class in that with two vital goals despite a quiet all round display. both forwards have been on the pitch at the same time for a total of 277 minutes in all competitions this season. during those minutes, only kane has been directly involved in a goal with a single assist, while the team itself has only managed four goals in total. not a great return over the equivalent of three full games. the amount of time and subsequently, the partnership, may have improved by this point had kane not suffered the ankle injury that kept him out of action since mid-september. but the pair, along with their teammates, have struggled for fluency this season as indicated by the fact this was the first time they’ve scored three or more goals in a league encounter. kane was far more productive in the last quarter of the game once janssen had been substituted. impact subs not only did janssen fail to score, although his only shot of the game was rebounded into harry winks’ path for the equaliser, the former az alkmaar man gave away the penalty from which west ham retook the lead. coincidentally, it’s only from the spot that he’s found the net for tottenham since arriving for £17m in the summer. to add insult to injury, janssen was substituted for dele alli immediately after lanzini’s penalty in the 68th minute. son heung-min – who replaced dembele on four minutes later – went on to provide assists for both of kane’s goals and all but consolidated his place in the starting 11 for the crunch champions league match at monaco. west ham and bilic looked to hold on to their lead by replacing dimitri payet with the defensively minded havard nordtveit in the 85th minute. unfortunately for the hammers, that proved to have an adverse effect with nordtveit fouling son to concede the injury-time penalty from which kane converted to earn all three-points. son’s cross from the left turned out to be an assist for kane’s first goal while the south korean also earned a penalty from a similar position. spurs set-pieces despite having the best defence in the league, once again tottenham conceded from set-pieces, making it seven from eight, including two penalties. both of west ham’s goals were the result of the home side’s failure to clear two consecutive corners. michail antonio opened the scoring with a close-range header – his 11th in 2016 – while lanzini’s penalty was won by winston reid who was fouled by janssen. crystal palace’s recent shambolic defending from set-pieces is taking the attention away from pochettino’s side but it won’t be long until pundits begin to highlight spurs’ deficiencies, especially if crosses into their box make up 75% of the goals they concede. rose and reid as mentioned in the last epl review, danny rose is key to tottenham’s play as he provides a frequent outlet on the left. the england international was joint-top with payet for chances created (three) whilst having more passes in the attacking third than any other player. rose’s teammate on the opposite flank, kyle walker, was fourth, which is impressive given both are full-backs but this only highlights the narrow set-up of tottenham’s formation. rose didn’t ignore his defensive duties with a game high of four blocked crosses while the leeds academy graduate also suffered the joint-second most fouls (three). reid was one of the game’s stronger performers despite finishing on the losing team and being sent off for two bookings in injury-time. at the heart of a three-man defence, the new zealander was second for ball recoveries (10) and top for interceptions (seven) as well as clearances (14). he also provided the unintentional assist for the first goal but that red card means he’ll be suspended for the next match away to man utd. summary west ham will be disappointed not to have capitalised on a poor tottenham performance, particularly given they were leading until the 89th minute. they’ll need to show more resilience in their upcoming games with arsenal at home and liverpool away following next week’s trip to old trafford. spurs lacked the same anticipation as their opponents with a big disparity in interceptions (five to west ham’s 23). christian eriksen was disappointing again having failed to create a single chance from the attacking midfield position, but winks’ display provided the biggest positive aside from the three-points. the young midfielder – who opened his first team account – finished third for passes completed and was successful with more tackles than any other tottenham player. if pochettino and his staff can fix the defensive issues from set-pieces and spurs can extend their unbeaten run beyond next week’s trip to chelsea and december’s match at man utd, then this could be a season that betters last. they just can’t solely rely on kane to do it. epl results (gameweek 12):
