the mumbler mumbling from china about football menu skip to content home england china euro 2016 about the mumbler 中国 post navigation ← older posts epl game of the week: swansea 5-4 crystal palace posted on november 29, 2016 by peterg a match between bottom of the table and a team on a five-game losing streak is probably best introduced as a basement battle. that phrase is probably better associated with fight club, which like the defending in this game, no one should talk about. unfortunately, the mumbler has to and couldn’t let one of the premier league’s more dramatic and baffling games pass by without some sort of explanation beyond the fact that alan pardew was involved. line-ups swansea’s manager, bob bradley, stuck with the same starting 11 that was denied a good win at everton last week thanks to seamus coleman’s late equaliser. one noticeable inclusion on the bench was spanish target man, fernando llorente, who didn’t even make the bench at goodison park. pardew, meanwhile, replaced andros townsend with connor wickham following the striker’s goal during the home defeat to man city. set-pieces the standout flaw of both teams in this game was the defending from set-pieces. as a result, only the opening two goals were of any decent quality with the following seven best described as scrappy. it was of no surprise that goals were scored via set-pieces given crystal palace’s ineptitude. only three games ago did pardew claim the manner of liverpool’s two goals from first-half corners was “not like us”. it was even more frustrating for the silver-haired manager having gone into that game looking to exploit their opponents at the other end from set-plays through christian benteke’s aerial prowess. against man city, yaya toure scored an 83rd minute winner when a kevin de bruyne corner was inexplicably allowed to reach the middle of the goal, four-yards out, without ever being more than two-feet off the ground. at the liberty stadium, four of swansea’s goals came via a set-piece, which took crystal palace’s season total to 13, top of the unwanted table and two ahead of hull in second. evidently, incompetently defending dead balls is contagious as swansea brought their tally to nine for the campaign – joint-third with stoke and watford – following the three they conceded on saturday. crystal palace’s obvious weakness on set-plays and zero clean sheets this season makes it puzzling as to why bradley didn’t start with llorente or at least an out-and-out striker. as gifted and influential as gylfi sigurdsson is, he doesn’t provide the aerial threat that saw the former bilbao and juventus forward develop a reputation as one of the best target men in the game a few seasons ago. it was therefore no coincidence that as soon as llorente replaced wayne routledge in the 66th minute, swansea scored from a corner – their 10th and final corner of the game. llorente’s first touch being a header that drew a poor excuse of a clearance from yohan cabaye on the far-post, allowing leroy fer to tap-in. christian beneteke was singled out by match of the day’s phil neville (ext. link?) for numerous lapses of concentration and responsibility when defending. concentration the three occasions where two goals were scored in two-minutes (twice for swansea and once for crystal palace) raises doubts over the players’ mentality. whilst both teams proved to have the spirit and resilience to bounce back from going behind, neither showed they could control the game and hold on to the lead. the only reason swansea won was because they didn’t have time to give up their lead such was the last 20 minutes. passing the game lacked quality in general and not just defensively. no other premier league match over the weekend had fewer completed passes whilst swansea’s and palace’s combined attempted long balls ranked fourth out of the 10 matches. the days of swansea playing possession based football appear to be replaced by a more direct approach in favour of percentages. this is perfectly understandable following the most recent two managers they’ve had in wales not as in-keeping with the swansea philosophy as roberto martinez, brendan rodgers, michael laudrup and garry monk. the swans ranked 13th for completed passes this weekend, 31 below the league average. crystal palace are less interested in retaining possession as they look to quickly get balls to their front two of benteke and wickham. it’s this approach that convinced so many that beneteke would have more joy at selhurst park – despite not yet scoring there – than he did last season with liverpool. this approach was confirmed by palace’s keeper, wayne hennessey, ending the game as his side’s joint-second highest ranking player for attacking third passes, and fifth overall. hennessey regularly went long in search of benteke whereas fabianski often went short. substitutes three of the six substitutions had the desired effect while one got caught up amongst the chaos. bradley’s first was llorente who was awarded man of the match. the american’s second substitution was angel rangel for modou barrow on the 80th minute, five minutes after james tomkins had bundled a goal in to reduce swansea’s lead to 3-2. a full-back for a winger was the defensive move aimed to tighten things up but just four-minutes later, palace had turned the game on its head. the introduction of jefferson montero for kyle naughton – a reverse of bradley’s second change – after palace took the lead proved successful. the colombian winger provided the cross which llorente would eventually equalise from as the home side pinned their opponents back in the remaining minutes. pardew, meanwhile, was forced to replace the injured wickham with townsend in the 52nd minute but he too enjoyed an instant response from his third and final change. bakary sako came on for james mcarthur at 3-2 and was immediately involved in the build-up to jack cork’s own goal. having taken the lead in the 84th minute, pardew would have probably liked to have brought on damien delaney to deal with the inevitable aerial bombardment. but that was taken away from him by wickham’s injury and his decision to swap martin kelly for the more attacking full-back, ezekiel fryers, with just over 20 minutes remaining. swansea attempted the same number of shots in the last half an hour (with more success) as they did in just over the first hour. like swansea, palace also attempted the same number of shots in the last half an hour as they did in just over the first hour. summary despite coming out victorious and getting closer to the teams above them, swansea and bradley will need to address their defensive deficiencies and consider reverting to a 4-2-3-1. llorente would be the focal point of attack and sigurdsson tucked in behind as the playmaker. the likes of routledge, barrow, montero and nathan dyer can provide the width while fer – who has already equalled his previous premier league scoring record of six – and cork can provide a decent central midfield pairing. crystal palace’s form goes from bad to worse with six losses on the bounce and their comical defending showing no signs of ending anytime soon. it’s no wonder they’re the worst league team in the country for 2016 and the pressure is building on the manager who appears to be running out of time to arrest what is becoming commonly known as the pardew-slide, and no, that’s not one of his dance moves. epl results (gameweek 13): burnley 1-2 man city hull 1-1 west brom leicester 2-2 2016/17 season epl game of the week: tottenham 3-2 west ham posted on november 22, 2016 by peterg tottenham snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with two harry kane goals in the dying moments. but whilst mauricio pochettino’s side continued to be the only unbeaten team in the league, their victory, however dramatic, hid a couple of repetitive issues that might hold spurs back from building on last season. line-ups pochettino altered his formation once more following the adaptation of the 3-4-3 he used at arsenal before the international break. this time, his team’s shape was more akin to a 4-4-2 diamond than the 4-2-3-1 suggested in the graphic below. west ham, meanwhile, continue to suffer from a lack of form or fitness amongst their forwards while captain mark noble was absent due to suspension. spanish goalkeeper, adrian, lost his place to darren randolph as slaven bilic set-up his side in today’s fashionable 3-4-2-1 following antonio conte’s recent success at chelsea. given the personnel available, bilic’s choice made sense, although it would be a big ask of playmaker, manuel lanzini, as part of a midfield duo against tottenham’s equivalent. whilst kane was lining up more alongside janssen, eriksen and dembele played in a more central role than suggested here. for west ham, swapping payet with sakho would give a fairer reflection as to how they lined-up. kane and janssen not working spurs’ line-up saw kane and vincent janssen start together for only the second time this season. much has been made of the dutchman’s lack of goals from open play or kane’s struggles to play with another striker and this game only further validated both claims. janssen is clearly a talented and especially hardworking forward but he’s in danger of joining the failed eredivisie imports of mateja kezman and afonso alves rather than the success stories of ruud van nistelrooy or luis suarez. it’s not completely ludicrous to suggest janssen’s energy is being disproportionately used in areas that aren’t measured against the success of a striker’s performance. his teammate, kane, on the other hand, provided a master class in that with two vital goals despite a quiet all round display. both forwards have been on the pitch at the same time for a total of 277 minutes in all competitions this season. during those minutes, only kane has been directly involved in a goal with a single assist, while the team itself has only managed four goals in total. not a great return over the equivalent of three full games. the amount of time and subsequently, the partnership, may have improved by this point had kane not suffered the ankle injury that kept him out of action since mid-september. but the pair, along with their teammates, have struggled for fluency this season as indicated by the fact this was the first time they’ve scored three or more goals in a league encounter. kane was far more productive in the last quarter of the game once janssen had been substituted. impact subs not only did janssen fail to score, although his only shot of the game was rebounded into harry winks’ path for the equaliser, the former az alkmaar man gave away the penalty from which west ham retook the lead. coincidentally, it’s only from the spot that he’s found the net for tottenham since arriving for £17m in the summer. to add insult to injury, janssen was substituted for dele alli immediately after lanzini’s penalty in the 68th minute. son heung-min – who replaced dembele on four minutes later – went on to provide assists for both of kane’s goals and all but consolidated his place in the starting 11 for the crunch champions league match at monaco. west ham and bilic looked to hold on to their lead by replacing dimitri payet with the defensively minded havard nordtveit in the 85th minute. unfortunately for the hammers, that proved to have an adverse effect with nordtveit fouling son to concede the injury-time penalty from which kane converted to earn all three-points. son’s cross from the left turned out to be an assist for kane’s first goal while the south korean also earned a penalty from a similar position. spurs set-pieces despite having the best defence in the league, once again tottenham conceded from set-pieces, making it seven from eight, including two penalties. both of west ham’s goals were the result of the home side’s failure to clear two consecutive corners. michail antonio opened the scoring with a close-range header – his 11th in 2016 – while lanzini’s penalty was won by winston reid who was fouled by janssen. crystal palace’s recent shambolic defending from set-pieces is taking the attention away from pochettino’s side but it won’t be long until pundits begin to highlight spurs’ deficiencies, especially if crosses into their box make up 75% of the goals they concede. rose and reid as mentioned in the last epl review, danny rose is key to tottenham’s play as he provides a frequent outlet on the left. the england international was joint-top with payet for chances created (three) whilst having more passes in the attacking third than any other player. rose’s teammate on the opposite flank, kyle walker, was fourth, which is impressive given both are full-backs but this only highlights the narrow set-up of tottenham’s formation. rose didn’t ignore his defensive duties with a game high of four blocked crosses while the leeds academy graduate also suffered the joint-second most fouls (three). reid was one of the game’s stronger performers despite finishing on the losing team and being sent off for two bookings in injury-time. at the heart of a three-man defence, the new zealander was second for ball recoveries (10) and top for interceptions (seven) as well as clearances (14). he also provided the unintentional assist for the first goal but that red card means he’ll be suspended for the next match away to man utd. summary west ham will be disappointed not to have capitalised on a poor tottenham performance, particularly given they were leading until the 89th minute. they’ll need to show more resilience in their upcoming games with arsenal at home and liverpool away following next week’s trip to old trafford. spurs lacked the same anticipation as their opponents with a big disparity in interceptions (five to west ham’s 23). christian eriksen was disappointing again having failed to create a single chance from the attacking midfield position, but winks’ display provided the biggest positive aside from the three-points. the young midfielder – who opened his first team account – finished third for passes completed and was successful with more tackles than any other tottenham player. if pochettino and his staff can fix the defensive issues from set-pieces and spurs can extend their unbeaten run beyond next week’s trip to chelsea and december’s match at man utd, then this could be a season that betters last. they just can’t solely rely on kane to do it. epl between last season’s second and third-placed sides saw mauricio pochettino spring a surprise with tottenham’s formation. line-ups spurs lined up in a 3-4-1-2 formation as oppose to their usual 4-2-3-1. eric dier dropped back to the right-side of defence alongside kevin wimmer and jan vertonghen. danny rose and kyle walker were the wing-backs with victor wanyama and mousa dembele in the middle. christian eriksen supported son heung-min and the returning harry kane – who had been out with an ankle injury since mid-september. for arsenal, arsene wenger made three changes from last week’s win at sunderland with nacho monreal, granit xhaka and theo walcott replacing kieran gibbs, mohamed elneny and alex oxlade-chamberlain. alexis sanchez was again leading the line for the gunners despite olivier giroud’s super-sub performance at the stadium of light. impact of spurs’ formation tottenham started better and looked more at home than arsenal. comfortable in possession and stifling their opponents’ opportunities, pochettino’s move to revert to a back three appeared to unsettle their opponents. much of that was down to the wing-backs forcing wenger’s wingers back to a midfield four. as a result, sanchez was often crowded out while mesut ozil struggled to link midfield with attack during the early exchanges. alex iwobi had arsenal’s first real clear opening following a counter-attack. with walcott tracking back to provide defensive support, hector bellerin raced forwards to be the outlet on the right as the ball found its way to iwobi on the opposite flank. unfortunately for the gunners, the nigerian’s tame side-footed effort did little to trouble hugo lloris in the tottenham goal. the counter isn’t a common approach for arsenal and wenger but exposing spurs on the break and getting behind their wing-backs appeared to be the best way as the three centre-backs were generally occupied by both ozil and sanchez’s movement. there was certainly a drive by arsenal to get the ball forwards quickly with the hosts completing 130 passes in the final third compared to spurs’ 75. that’s despite the away side completing nearly 100 passes more in total and having the majority of possession. the additional centre back allowed tottenham to retain possession without much pressure as arsenal’s wingers were preoccupied with both rose and walker. iwobi’s chance, 15-minutes before half-time, triggered a swing in momentum that saw arsenal enjoy their best period of the match. ozil and dembele german playmaker, ozil grew into the game, benefitting from a possession play higher up the field which saw him finish top for attacking third passes. subsequently, he also finished top for chances created. it was ozil’s 42nd minute free kick that led to arsenal’s goal as kevin wimmer headed the cross into his own net. the teasing ball made life particularly difficult for the austrian centre-back who may have had a case for claiming distraction from one or two arsenal players who were offside. that goal meant five of the six conceded by spurs in the league this season have been from set-plays. that’s one more than liverpool who have come under much scrutiny for their defending on crosses from dead ball situations. tottenham’s top performer, meanwhile, turned out to be the man of the match. dembele played a pivotal role in ensuring kane wasn’t left isolated by allowing the wing-backs and attacking players to get forwards. the belgian also won the penalty from which kane converted to level the scores. dembele’s passing rate of 89.4% (42/47) was better than any other starting player, while he succeeded with all six attempted take ons. the former fulham man was his side’s best player for ball recoveries with eight and he won all of his attempted tackles. his importance to tottenham and the way pochettino wants to play is increasing with each and every game. the dribbling ability and dynamism dembele provides is found wanting when spurs’ central midfield is occupied by both wanyama and dier. tactical substitutes tottenham, despite their controlling start, were probably grateful for half-time and they took advantage of the opportunity to readdress any tactical issues. more so than the first period, they began brightly and in addition to the goal – five-minutes in – they created a couple of other chances that nearly saw them take the lead. arsenal failed to readjust until wenger made the first substitution of the match after 65-minutes. aaron ramsey replaced francis coquelin in an attacking move that eased some of the pressure on the defence. within six-minutes of the first sub, wenger had replaced both wingers. giroud came in for iwobi to provide more of a focal point which sanchez struggled to deliver during a frustrating afternoon. it seemed to prompt a more direct approach that led to the french forward finishing second for attacking aerial duels (three from five). the final substitute – all made prior to spurs’ first – saw walcott replaced by oxlade-chamberlain after a quiet second period that yielded just one foul suffered and zero successful passes from five attempts. pochettino unsurprisingly cut kane’s return short by a little under 20-minutes as last season’s top scorer began to tire. the argentinian manager was forced to replace walker with kieran trippier due to injury while swapping son for harry winks in the 89th minute was as much to do with time wasting as it was tactical. chances there weren’t many clear-cut opportunities for either side but both did strike the woodwork. according to the stats, arsenal had five more attempts at goal than their rivals (15 to 10). however, on closer inspection, that difference of five matched the number of shots from outside the area, none of which hit the target. although, walcott was extremely close with his rasping drive which cannoned back off the post moments before the opener. tottenham’s eriksen found the same post, albeit at a much slower pace, when his in swinging free kick evaded all of the runners as the match entered the last five minutes of normal time. summary pochettino’s new formation destabilised his opponents and they looked the more likely winners once kane equalised from the spot. arsenal were disappointing, not least sanchez, while wenger’s substitutions managed to interrupt tottenham’s second-half flow. but the nervousness to which wenger touched upon during his post-match interview was evident in their haste to attack having clocked up seven offsides in the first half. overall, it was a draw that satisfies both teams for different reasons. arsenal avoid a disappointing defeat to their biggest rivals before a two-week international break while tottenham’s unbeaten start to the season continues. but pochettino knows there’s plenty of room for improvement having drawn more than they’ve won. epl results (gameweek 11): bournemouth 1-2 sunderland burnley 3-2 crystal palace man city 1-1 would prove to be no different, particularly during a baffling half an hour during the first period, but the match would eventually see jurgen klopp’s side run out victorious and remain joint-top of the premier league. line-ups club captain, scott dann returned to the side having missed the last four league matches through injury. summer signing, andros townsend, was dropped with lee chung-yong replacing the former tottenham and newcastle winger. for liverpool, alberto moreno made his first league start since the opening game of the season in the absence of the unwell james milner. emre can held on to his place in the starting 11 despite georginio wijnaldum making a full-recovery from the injury he sustained during the last international break. and despite two goals in the midweek league cup tie against spurs, daniel sturridge had to settle for a place on the bench alongside fellow forward, divock origi. calm before the chaos for the first 15 minutes there was little to report. liverpool had the majority of possession but were unable to breakthrough a fairly organised palace side who themselves had offered nothing in attack. then can scored following some neat build-up play by philippe coutinho and moreno down the left-hand side. coutinho had tucked inside as he often prefers, before clipping a pass for the attack-minded moreno to run onto. the full-back found can with a first-time ball and the german midfielder slotted home via a slight deflection. but that goal didn’t just open the scoring, it opened the game, as it triggered half an hour of madness that could rival any soap opera. defensive issues just two-minutes after taking the lead, liverpool, specifically dejan lovren, relinquished their advantage. lovren’s miskick inadvertently teed up james mcarthur for a header as loris karius was left stranded. the reds’ keeper has come in for some impatient criticism since his summer arrival but he should have raised his arms as he tried to literally save his teammate’s blushes. a few minutes later, lovren showed his character when he rectified his mistake with his second goal of the season. his header from a coutinho corner went between steve mandada’s legs as the croatian defender outmuscled dann six-yards from goal. moments after, coutinho and moreno combined again down the left, resulting in the latter smashing the outside of the post with a strike from the angle. with a little over half an hour played, crystal palace levelled for the second time through yet another mcarthur header. this time, lovren was first beaten by former liverpool player, christian benteke, before wilfried zaha picked out mcarthur who pipped lovren to the ball. it was palace’s first two attempts on goal and liverpool’s control of the game was being undermined by some frailties in defence. much has been made about liverpool’s backline but as a team they’ve defended very well. in fact, they’ve conceded the fewest number of shots per game this season with an average of 7.8. of course, the high press has an impact on that with many opponents pegged back in their own half, not to mention the performances of ‘holding’ midfielder jordan henderson. during the game at selhurst park, liverpool’s captain won eight tackles, more than any liverpool player in any league game this season. he also sits joint-second in the league for number of tackles with leicester’s danny drinkwater, trailing everton’s idrissa gueye by one. the away side managed to take the lead for a third time a couple of minutes before the break. it was the other liverpool centre-back, joel matip, who benefitted from further abject defending on corners. alan pardew, along with most football fans, thought that his side might be able to cause the opposition some trouble from set-pieces given liverpool’s record this season, but it turned out to be crystal palace’s undoing instead. matip lost his marker, james tomkins, and was able to bullet his header past mandada without a challenge in sight. with such poor defending on display, it’s no surprise that these sides have managed just a solitary clean sheet combined (liverpool against man utd). can and coutinho in terms of individual performances, can and coutinho stood out for different reasons. the former has more pressure this season with the arrival of wijnaldum, who had kept can out of the side until his recent injury. but the ex-bayer leverkusen midfielder has staked his claim and appears to be getting stronger with each passing match. against palace, can finished top for ball recoveries (14, six more than second place), second for attacking aerial duels (three, albeit a long way off benteke’s 11) and fourth for both passes (48 from 62) and attempts at goal (two). the 22-year-old now needs to try and introduce more goals to his game having only scored four since his arrival in 2014. it was more about where the ball recoveries took place, which showed liverpool’s high press against palace’s deeper set-up. coutinho, meanwhile, has really started to consistently dictate games. before, the little magician would show flashes of brilliance or go on runs of form, but now he’s providing a constant threat and has already racked up four goals and four assists in the league. during this fixture, coutinho finished top for chances created (four) and attacking third passes (23 from 30). he was joint-second for take ons (three) and fourth for tackles (four from eight). one area he does need to improve on is his shot conversion, with the brazilian often guilty of taking a few too many shots from distance, although they are spectacular when they go in. only sergio aguero and zlatan ibrahimovic average more shots per game this season. the only thing lacking from can’s display were some more chances created while coutinho should have added a goal to his man of the match performance. chances it wasn’t just coutinho who was guilty of missing opportunities. sadio mane should have scored at least one of his two very good chances, particularly his first-half effort that went over the bar after some great awareness and composure by nathaniel clyne. one player who didn’t squander his clear chance was roberto firmino. the versatile-forward provided a delightful dink finish to henderson’s well-weighted through ball to all but seal victory with 20-minutes remaining. crystal palace on the other hand created only one clear chance which fell to benteke who side-footed straight at karius. all the talk before the game was the belgian’s aerial prowess against liverpool’s vulnerable keeper and defence but it was the reds who actually attempted and succeeded with more crosses – five from 17 against three from 15. with this in mind, it made less sense that townsend – who is seventh in the league for average number of crosses per game – was left on the sidelines until the 66th minute. jason puncheon’s restricted involvement of just 15 or so minutes due to injury was also a hinderance given he ranks third in the league for crosses. liverpool bettered crystal palace both in quantity and quality of attempts at goal. summary clearly both sides have to sharpen up defensively, but it would seem that’s an easier task for liverpool given how few chances they concede and the first goal in particular being a bit of a freak incident. pardew needs to find a balance to his side that will allow both zaha and townsend to excel. he mentioned during his post-match interview that townsend wants to play on the right but zaha is difficult to displace given how well he’s currently playing there. perhaps a few position swaps during the game would solve that issue? he’ll also hope for some consistent performances over their next few fixtures which include burnley (a), man city (h) and swansea (a). liverpool continue to impress with their entertaining brand of football – hence why they’ve regularly featured on this blog. the reds are top for average number of shots on target and only second to tottenham for shots per game. and despite the impression that they’re a counter-attacking side – they are, just further up the field then is commonly associated – only per guardiola’s man city have averaged more possession. klopp’s side face watford (h), southampton (a) and sunderland (h) over the next several weeks which could conceivably see them extend their unbeaten run, which currently stands at 11. maintaining this momentum and energy could be more important than niggling defensive issues as the season progresses. epl results (gameweek 10): sunderland 1-4 five matches without a win for pep guardiola’s man city. the last three games have seen city earn just two-points with a loss at tottenham followed by consecutive home draws against everton and yesterday’s opponents. lineups guardiola again opted for the expansive 3-4-2-1 formation. the reason for this has as much to do with the club’s array of attacking talent as the lack of top quality full-backs. it can’t be all bad if you’re able to field a starting 11 that includes fernandinho, ilkay gundogan, david silva, kevin de bruyne, sergio aguero and two of nolito, jesus navas, raheem sterling or leroy sane – the latter pair getting the nod this time around. but it does appear to have its issues, particularly on the counter-attack as romelu lukaku proved last week with a devastating ruthlessness that gael clichy will take some time to recover from. the saints, meanwhile, went with the 4-3-1-2 that manager claude puel has stuck with from the very start despite the understandable teething problems during the opening weeks of the season. a run of just one loss – away to inter milan – in their last nine games which have only seen three goals conceded suggests that the team are developing an understanding that will make them hard to break down. narrow block the disciplined nature of southampton’s setup ensures few opportunities are afforded to their opponents. the narrow three in midfield of jordy clasie, oriol romeu and steven davis makes it especially difficult for teams like man city to penetrate through. as a result, city needed wide options and overlapping runs in the hope of creating two against one scenarios on the away side’s full-backs which included sam mcqueen making his first premier league start. but guardiola’s formation and personnel meant there wasn’t the overlapping runs from deep starting positions. instead, sterling or sane would often receive the ball just into the attacking third and look to dribble their way to the byline instead. whilst both players possess the skills to succeed in one v one situations, their combined return of five from 11 attempted take-ons (four for sterling and one for sane) suggests an attacking wing-back might have been a better alternative. for southampton, the trio up top – dusan tadic, nathan redmond and charlie austin – were entrusted to relieve the pressure on their backline whilst increasing it on city’s. although they weren’t able to create many chances, austin managed to earn more fouls (five) than any other player and redmond recovered eight balls, the joint-third most across both teams. the wide areas on the counter-attack would have been the best route to goal for southampton. when given the chance to organise themselves, man city would revert to a back-four as fernandinho dropped into the centre alongside vincent kompany with john stones and aleksandar kolarov filling in as full-backs. only two passes were played either down the line or outside and just one was successful. these two players were hugging the touchlines without overlapping runners. romeu and van dijk these two players typified southampton’s approach and have been vital to the club’s defensive solidity. romeu was deservedly awarded man of the match as the spanish midfielder finished joint-fifth, along with virgil van dijk, for ball recoveries (six), second for interceptions (three) and first for tackles (eight from 15). the former chelsea man also contributed to his side’s goal when he forced fernandinho’s ball to stones who subsequently sold his keeper, claudio bravo, short with a backpass that allowed redmond to nip in and score. van dijk put in a dominant performance at the back with the most blocks (three) and clearances (eight from nine). the dutchman was also second for tackles with seven from eight attempts. the only disappointment was substitute kelechi inheancho’s equaliser 10-minutes into the second half. van dijk was a little slow to covering the nigerian forward’s run as he tried and failed to pass him on to his centre-back partner jose fonte. that goal was just one of three attempts on target by city, the fewest achieved during guardiola’s reign at the club. the difference between two 1-1 draws at the etihad in a week. gundogan the former dortmund midfielder was one of the most influential players with top stats for both passes (80 from 84) and chances created (four). but the german’s numbers compared to silva’s suggests the latter was crowded out by the narrow block which allowed more time to those, such as gundogan, further back. the previous two league games saw silva lead in terms of chances created with seven at home to everton and four away to tottenham. for man city to succeed, guardiola will need to find a way for the likes of silva and de bruyne – brought off for inheanacho at half-time – to have a greater impact in the final third than the deeper central midfielders when playing against a set-up like southampton’s. the only chance silva created was from a corner. summary puel is proving to be another shrewd appointment at southampton and it will be interesting to see how chelsea – who also play three at the back – fair at st. mary’s next weekend. based on recent form, it’s hard to see past another positive result for the saints. whilst man city conceded a goal via an individual error, the lack of overlapping runners meant the home side often played in front of southampton’s defence. unlike last week’s draw with everton, this was a fair result. but it’s really not the time to panic, despite the fact there are similarities to this season’s start and last’s. a win in the league cup derby at man utd on wednesday, which has taken on greater significance following this weekend’s results, will more than make-up for recent disappointments. epl results (gameweek 9): bournemouth 0-0 tottenham arsenal 0-0 middlesbrough burnley 2-1 everton hull 0-2 stoke leicester 3-1 crystal man utd posted on october 19, 2016 by peterg jose bourinho reduced the much anticipated clash between liverpool and man utd to a game with less rhythm than a drunk uncle at a wedding on a silent dancefloor. sky’s best efforts to spice up a day of the week commonly associated with doom, despair and denial by attributing a colour to it did nothing but disappoint an expectant audience. two-hours lost that in hindsight would have been better off spent stacking pennies in chronological order. but we’re always wiser after the event as jurgen klopp surely relayed to his players following their disjointed display. liverpool’s edgy start the german manager was clearly far from happy with his side’s first-half performance. liverpool conjured up just two weak attempts at goal and countless unforced errors, most of which he put down to the players being too hectic in possession. all the pre-match talk was about the atmosphere under the lights at anfield with its new stand. but simultaneously both fans and players lost patience as man utd predictably took their time on all set-pieces while disrupting the flow of the game by committing and earning free-kicks. formation the apparent 4-2-3-1 formation mourinho started with quickly became a 6-3-1 once possession was relinquished, an occurrence that became increasingly common as the clock crept towards the 90th minute. during the latter part of the first-half, it became clear that the red devils were happy to drop deep and allow liverpool’s centre-backs to have the ball. united’s backline, which included ‘wingers’ ashley young and marcus rashford, showed great discipline and organisation to drown out all time and space in their defensive third. this made it even harder for philippe coutinho – who started in the midfield three due to the absence of georginio wijnaldum while adam lallana was only fit enough to take a place on the bench – to have the desired impact in attack. the little brazilian was as guilty as anyone in terms of trying to force the pass during the first half and not show the considered patience klopp mentioned in his post-match interviews. when not in possession, man utd’s full-backs tucked in and their wingers dropped back to fill in the vacated space. can’t go forwards we’ll have to go backwards one of the key differences in stats were the number of backpasses each side played. liverpool played six times as many as man utd (24 to four) which not only proved that the forward options were often restricted, but also that mourinho’s side preferred to risk losing possession further up field in search of the aerial prowess of zlatan ibrahimovic, maourane fellaini and to a lesser extent, paul pogba. the frequent passes back to loris karius only fuelled anfield’s frustrations. the young german keeper was far less willing to go long compared to david de gea in man utd’s goal with 27 of his 29 successful passes going to either dejan lovren (19) or joel matip (8). it was presumably designed to draw united’s players out from their stifling formation but the well-drilled outfit from manchester rarely wavered. both lovren and matip were afforded a bit more time and space on the ball in the second half as united retreated even further back, proven by their paltry two-attempts on goal. the cameroonian defender even surged forwards to create emre can’s chance that forced a great save by de gea just before the hour mark and adam lallana’s introduction. liverpool often went back to karius to maintain possession and pull united out of position which rarely happened. lallana’s impact the former southampton midfielder replaced a limited daniel sturridge which led to roberto firmino filling in as the central striker and coutinho moving to his more natural position on the left of the front three. instantly, there was a greater urgency about liverpool’s play and the sort of pressing viewers and klopp had expected from the first whistle. and ten minutes after the substitution, coutinho forced de gea into another stunning save when the spaniard, at full stretch, tipped a 25-yard strike past the post. the former atletico madrid keeper is proving to be quite a nuisance for the reds with a number of impressive saves in this fixture since his arrival in 2011. the drab nature of this encounter left spectators feeling that only a moment of magic or a defensive error would determine a winner. coutinho nearly provided that magic when he flicked a pass for his brazilian compatriot firmino to run onto. it looked like he was through on goal only for antonio valencia to make a last ditch tackle and maintain his side’s clean sheet as united held out for a creditable draw. liverpool’s approach to the attacking third changed once lallana came on, particularly the long balls from the back as united retreated due to tired legs and contentment with the draw. chelsea 2013/14 all over again? countless references were made to the performance of mourinho’s chelsea when they went to a high-flying liverpool who were top of the league with just three games remaining. unfortunately for the home side, steven gerrard suffered his famous slip and demba ba capitalised before former red fernando torres confirmed victory by tapping home in stoppage-time. but the stats of that match actually suggest a more open-affair with 37 attempts at goal (26 for liverpool and 11 for chelsea) compared to a total of 16 on monday night (nine for liverpool and seven for man utd). although, 20 of liverpool’s attempts in 2014 were restricted to efforts from outside the area. these many attempts at goal would have been welcomed on monday even if most were from outside the area. mourinho’s chelsea only had 25.9% possession (157/241 attempted passes) that day compared to man utd’s 35.4% (259/342). that figure – the lowest for man utd recorded since opta started in 2003/04 – was questioned by the portuguese manager after the match who claimed his ‘guy’ said it was 42%. we should see if that same ‘guy’ can do our accounts. time wasting and disruptions between chelsea circa 2014 and man utd circa 2016 saw the blues commit just seven fouls to united’s 20. meanwhile, liverpool were far less content to go back to their keeper with just four backpasses in total. so while there were similarities in approach, mourinho’s side of today was more disruptive and less ambitious going forwards, a reason being their lack of pace on the counter with rashford spending more time filling in as an auxiliary full-back. a more disruptive style by man utd in terms of fouls also in-keeping with this fixture between two bitter rivals. summary it was a job done for man utd with ander herrera especially effective in midfield and deservedly man of the match. he managed to top the game stats for take-ons (6/6), ball recoveries (10), tackles (7/12) and interceptions (10). mourinho in typical fashion looked to divert attention from his side’s lack of ambition by claiming liverpool were defensive and should be criticised for only mustering two notable efforts on target from so much possession, but they were two great saves and a perfectly timed tackle from victory and a very different post-match conversation. klopp will be content to have avoided defeat – something liverpool sides in recent history would have suffered – but hope his side learns from this experience, especially given that they’re likely to come up against an equally cautious opponent in west brom on saturday. whether mourinho will utilise similar tactics against chelsea on sunday will be interesting to see, but hopefully not as much as the actual game itself. epl results (gameweek 8): chelsea 3-0 leicester arsenal 3-2 swansea bournemouth 6-1 hull man city 1-1 everton stoke 2-0 sunderland west brom 1-1 tottenham crystal palace 0-1 west ham middlesbrough 0-1 watford southampton 3-1 burnley liverpool 0-0 man utd posted in england, epl 2016/17 season epl game of the week: tottenham 2-0 man city posted on october 3, 2016 by peterg league leaders man city travelled to white hart lane looking to maintain their 100% start to pep guardiola’s debut season in england. in their way stood a relentless and tenacious tottenham that simply put, refused to let their opponents breathe. lineups tottenham fielded a side without an out and out striker, instead opting for in-form son heung-min as the furthest player forward. man city’s most notable change was fernando coming in for ilkay gundogan to bring more of a physical presence against spurs’ victor wanyama and moussa sissoko. fluent formation mauricio pochettino introduced an adaptation of his side’s regular 4-2-3-1 by having christian eriksen and dele alli rotate their central roles with at least one providing the no.10 role (normally alli) in support of son when in possession. erik lamela and sissoko were the wider midfield options while wanyama managed the impressive feat of sitting deep on the front foot as protection. the defensive midfielder signed from pochettino’s former club, southampton, had a brilliant game which included nine ball recoveries and six successful tackles from the eight he attempted. one of those tackles saw the kenyan dispossess fernandinho which led to the opening goal as danny rose whipped in a ninth-minute cross that proved too difficult for aleksandar kolarov to defend. wanyama’s five fouls was a game high and included a caution, highlighting the weakest area of his game. but those disruptions ensured man city struggled to find any rhythm, particularly during a first-half that saw spurs take, and subsequently maintain, a two-goal lead. wanyama made fewer passes against man city but regularly disrupted play compared to the draw with liverpool earlier in the season. danish international eriksen had more defensive duties than usual in his adapted role. the playmaker certainly didn’t shirk the responsibility as proven by a game high 16 ball recoveries and four interceptions that were the most amongst his teammates. this didn’t, however, prevent him from providing an attacking threat with only sergio aguero attempting more shots at goal and david silva more passes in the attacking third. eriksen played more of a deeper role than usual but still provided an attacking threat. fernandinho man city, meanwhile, couldn’t handle the frenetic pace of the opening exchanges, not least their normally reliable pivot in midfield, fernandinho. the brazilian was often refused the time and space to influence proceedings and left exposed despite the inclusion of the more defensively minded fernando. unlike at old trafford several weeks ago, fernandinho was unable to venture into tottenham’s defensive third and establish city’s authority on the game. fernandinho misplaced more passes due to tottenham limiting his time, space and options. dele alli’s goal with less than ten minutes of the half remaining was a fair reflection of the home side’s superiority in terms of desire, work ethic and application. the second period, as expected, saw guardiola’s men gain more of a foothold on the game largely thanks to the disappointing and anonymous fernando being substituted for gundogan after 53-minutes. city were then quicker at filling spaces thanks to a better balance and shape across the pitch. they more than doubled their interceptions during the second period whilst tottenham’s numbers dropped. there was a clear improvement in city’s second half performance, highlighted by their turnovers of possession. penalty pettiness fernandinho was again caught out when his attempted tackle on alli from behind led to andre marriner pointing to the spot. one of few negatives for spurs was not only lamela’s miss – a save by claudio bravo who appeared to bounce on his toes faster than most keepers often do – but what preceded it. son and lamela were caught arguing over who was going to take the penalty and whilst they aren’t the first to do so in recent times (see tadic/austin or baines/mirallas), it is baffling that professionals can’t work this stuff out prior to kick-off or even follow basic pre-match instructions. it certainly doesn’t help the eventual taker as displayed by lamela’s weak effort. belgian solidity toby alderweireld and jan vertonghen continued to prove they are one of, if not the strongest centre-back partnerships in the league as tottenham claimed their fourth clean sheet from seven league games. the belgian duo were colossal in defence with 20 clearances, including just one unsuccessful headed clearance from the 12 attempted between them. whilst having speedy full-backs like kyle walker and danny rose helps, vertoghen and alderweireld’s defend first attitude ensures not only that spurs are difficult to breakdown but it also takes the pressure off their attackers. this result was only the third time in the league that they scored two or more goals. alderweireld was particularly impressive with his defensive clearances. summary tottenham were more fluent in their formation and pressing than passing or creativity. it was almost tiring to watch as one white shirt after another hunted and harassed every ball possible but it does suggest this is the best way to play against guardiola’s side. celtic put in a similar performance, fuelled by celtic park’s intense atmosphere, and this seems to cause man city the most disruptions. sunday was the first time they had gone behind in a league match this season and teams such as liverpool will be looking at the game as a blueprint for their approach. the only real caveat being that star player, kevin de bruyne, is likely to be available then and guardiola would have had more time to work on nullifying such teams. after this weekend, the title race appears closer to pre-season expectations than a week ago with just two-points separating the top-four. unfortunately it’s an international break which means a two-week wait until the next twist and turns. epl results (gameweek 7): everton 1-1 crystal palace swansea 1-2 liverpool hull 0-2 chelsea sunderland 1-1 west brom arsenal 3-0 chelsea posted on september 26, 2016 by peterg arsenal earned their first premier league win against chelsea since october 2011 thanks to a clinical first half performance that exposed chelsea’s current pitfalls. lineups arsenal were unchanged from their win at hull the previous week. chelsea, meanwhile, reverted to a 4-1-4-1 instead of a 4-2-3-1 and made one change from their defeat to liverpool with fabregas replacing oscar. cahill and ivanovic the right-side of chelsea’s defence has rightly come in for some criticism in recent weeks. branislav ivanovic is showing clear signs of ageing and his lack of pace is now often targeted by opponents. alongside the serbian is gary cahill who’s struggling in the absence of john terry. the england centre-half was dispossessed by leroy fer at swansea where chelsea ended up drawing and losing their captain to injury. whilst the challenge from fer should have resulted in a free-kick, it was cahill’s poor touch that enticed the dutchman in the first place. during the liverpool game, cahill scuffed a clearance that jordan henderson controlled before curling beyond thibaut courtois with what turned out to be the winner. and against arsenal at the weekend, cahill was robbed of the ball, fairly, by the ever-running alexis sanchez who went on to open the scoring with a deft and composed finish. the yellow shapes indicate where an error by cahill led to a goal. sanchez and walcott the chilean has been moved into a centre forward position, particularly now theo walcott has reverted back to establishing himself as a winger, and it seems to offer arsenal the kind of fluency that is harder to come by with olivier giroud through the middle. arsenal’s last game against hull was a dominant display with both sanchez and walcott excelling. saturday’s match was much the same as they blitzed into a two-goal lead with walcott capping off a fine team move just minutes after sanchez had broken the deadlock. walcott’s last two goals have finished off a nine and ten-pass move. the england international also managed three successful tackles from four attempts, a total only bettered by chelsea’s n’golo kante (four from five). ozil and hazard chelsea’s issues in defence were amplified by arsenal’s attacking line-up performing so well. in addition to sanchez and walcott, mesut ozil was instrumental as he played a one-two with sanchez to all but seal victory before half-time. the former real madrid playmaker also created three opportunities – the joint most in the game – and had the best pass completion of any player who attempted 50 or more passes (90.3%). eden hazard on the other hand had a quiet game and was unable to influence proceedings with just one chance created and a couple of failed efforts at goal. he only succeeded with one of his four attempted take-ons which was in stark contrast to ozil who achieved three from three. playing on the left of a front three saw the belgian leave azpilicueta exposed for the second goal as hector bellerin found the space to provide an assist for walcott’s goal. hazard – who came off after 71 minutes – was less influential than ozil. arsenal’s defence the speedy spanish right-back also produced a fantastic recovery challenge in the second half when half-time substitute, pedro, thought he was through on goal. it was a tackle in keeping with the solid arsenal defence that kept usual nuisance diego costa quiet and frustrated throughout. that was largely due to the performances on laurent kosicelny and shkodran mustafi who showed promising signs of forming the sort of defensive partnership wenger and arsenal have been lacking for some time. koscielny won all four of his defensive aerial duels while between the duo, they managed ten clearances from 12 attempts. arsenal’s backline makes up the top four in terms of interceptions with nacho monreal, mustafi and koscielny all on four and bellerin with two. koscielny and mustafa rarely failed with a duel, clearance or tackle not to mention their eight interceptions. summary chelsea’s use of matic and kante restricts their attacking prowess, especially when cesc fabregas was so ineffective that he was replaced by recently recruited left-back, marcos alonso. this left costa isolated and frustrated while arsenal’s attacking quartet enjoyed playing on the front foot as they emphatically did so during the first half. antonio conte has to solve his side’s defensive frailties and you expect that with more time that will happen. their season started well but was far from spectacular when you consider they needed late winners against west ham and watford. and since their opening three victories, they’ve only managed to draw at swansea and lose to two of their rivals for the top four. conte will need to get points on the board with their next match away to hull followed by home ties against reigning champions leicester and jose mourinho’s return to stamford bridge with man utd. arsenal meanwhile are enjoying a run of four straight victories after losing their opening game to liverpool and drawing at leicester. the front three with ozil behind is an intimidating prospect for any side at the moment and wenger still has options like giroud, lucas perez and alex oxlade-chamberlain on the bench as well as aaron ramsey to return from injury. arsenal’s season will depend on their new players settling in and the club avoiding a packed out treatment room, but the signs based on this game are particularly good. epl results (gameweek 6): man utd 4-1 leicester watford posted in england, epl 2016/17 season the blue devils and red eagles race for third posted on september 22, 2016 by peterg shanghai sipg find themselves level on points with shanghai shenhua in the chinese super league (csl) following sunday’s win at hangzhou greentown. the top-three sides in the csl and cfa cup winners qualify for the following season’s asian champions league (acl) which will naturally help recruit players…if the hugely inflated salaries weren’t enough already. both sides have just five games of the season remaining and on the face of it, sipg have a more challenging run in. but whilst sipg have ‘stronger’ opponents, three of their games come a day before shenhua’s giving sven goran-eriksson’s team the chance to crank up the pressure on their city rivals. shenhua, however, will be pleased that two of those three are against the league’s top two sides. the blue devils’ shaky away form (8th in the division) should improve with gregorio manzano’s side travelling to three of the csl’s bottom six clubs. they will host their toughest opponents (henan and beijing) at the hongkou stadium where they’re currently unbeaten in the league. sipg’s home form on the other hand isn’t quite so impressive. it’s also unlikely to get much better as they still have leaders guangzhou evergrande, manuel pellegrini’s hebei fortune and shandong luneng – who like sipg, recently lost their acl quarter-final tie against south korean opposition – to visit. shenhua need cao yunding (4 goals, 8 assists), giovanni moreno (7 goals, 3 assists) and obafemi martins (8 goals, 3 assists) to hit form in the close season. the trio, minus the injured ba’s 14 strikes, have scored 70.4% of shenhua’s league goals this season. as a team, shenhua have scored 29.3% (12 of 41) of their goals in the last 15 minutes which suggests their fitness and concentration levels are better than most of their opponents. sipg, meanwhile, have rarely scored between the 15th and 30th minute of games but they do tend to have more joy in the second half, peaking from the hour mark until the 75th minute. they’ll hope asian record signing, hulk, can carry his side to a strong finish which given his name and appearance, should be more than possible. the rivalry between these two sides means local pride is of greater value than acl qualification. that theory gained credence after last night’s results mean the cfa cup final is between guangzhou evergrande and jiangsu suning, which will likely see the team that finishes fourth also qualify. shenhua supporters view sipg as the new, unwanted kids on the block. sipg fans see their club as a fresh start, post the match-fixing era that has tainted chinese football. though referees and players are no longer being bribed, shenhua’s following would suggest that has now transferred to the support of their counterparts with claims that the shanghai international port group (sipg) pay their employees to attend matches and help fill the 56,000 capacity shanghai stadium. sipg’s lavish spending on foreigners in terms of transfer fees and/or wages has also left their fans suffering from the ‘plastic’ label. last night, manzano showed where his priorities lie during the cfa cup semi-final against jiangsu suning. the spanish manager opted for a makeshift team that saw all of his foreign players and some of his stronger chinese personnel rested for the second-leg despite the fact his side were very much in the tie following a first-leg 3-2 defeat. they subsequently lost 1-0 and were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate. it undervalues the cfa cup much like the domestic cup competitions in england. although, semi-finals often see a side’s strongest eleven fielded regardless of their league circumstances. naturally, fans are upset and frustrated by this move and that will only intensify if they fail to overcome sipg. but if they do manage to finish third then last night’s line-up would be quickly forgotten by most. this battle is so close that it might be even more interesting than the title race which looks likely to be won by guangzhou evergrande for a sixth consecutive year. although, the penultimate game of the season away to second-placed jiangsu suning could make things a little tenser when the campaign comes to an end on the 5th november. posted in china, csl 2016 season epl game of the week: watford 3-1 man utd posted on september 20, 2016 by peterg watford enforced a third straight defeat for man united – jose mourinho’s 14th in his last 32 games – thanks to a dogged, determined and disciplined display. while mourinho will point to poor officiating – like he did during last week’s derby defeat at home to man city – walter mazzarri will be mightily proud of his side’s efforts at vicarage road. line-ups both managers persisted with their formations of 3-5-2 (watford) and 4-2-3-1 (man utd). younes kaboul was replaced by sebastian prodl as the only change for watford from their comeback defeat of west ham. mourinho meanwhile, brought in anthony martial, marcus rashford and chris smalling for henrik mkhitaryan, jesse lingard and daley blind. referee decisions michael oliver – who seemed to think it was valentine’s day on tinder as he dished out all six yellow cards in the last 15 minutes – did, along with his linesman, miss the foul on martial that led to the opening goal for etienne capoue. the penalty awarded right at the death for marouane fellaini’s challenge on juan zuniga was a correct call despite mourinho’s post-match complaint. so despite mourinho being right to dispute the first call and suggest it was pivotal to the result, he shouldn’t complain about the eventual outcome which like last week was fair. of course it’s pr 101 to try and deflect some, if not all, of the attention away from your side’s shortcomings and mourinho has previous for seeking the limelight himself often at the cost of his own reputation. but the hornets were deserved winners and that will undoubtedly irk mourinho more than the officials’ performances. the problem players paul pogba and rooney are becoming negative talking points after each game. one due to his world record transfer fee, the other due to his reputation that has declined – along with his performances – in tandem with this questionable deep midfield role he often finds himself in for both club and country. pogba plays best alongside two others in the middle, one of which is a deep-lying midfielder. whether it was andrea pirlo/ hernanes at juventus or yohan cabaye/ n’golo kante at france, pogba always had that defensive protection and was able to roam – predominantly on the left – as he pleased. this two-man set-up with fellaini requires much more positional discipline. against watford, pogba only had one moment of note which saw his dipping shot strike the crossbar with heurelho gomes imitating a child playing piggy in the middle. other than that, it has been a quiet return to old trafford for the much-hyped frenchman. pogba in a two-man midfield (watford) compared to a three-man midfield (switzerland). rooney on the other hand seems more interested in dropping deep from the expected no.10 position to collect the ball and spray a pass instead of playing in the final third. it’s an odd situation for a player who is england’s record scorer and will inevitably be man utd’s once he gets the four more needed to surpass sir bobby charlton. he shouldn’t be dropping deeper at the age of 30, although coming on to the scene as a 16-year-old may result in an early burnout. against watford, rooney managed just one attempt at goal and succeeded with four from 12 crosses. one of those failures occurred during the second half and went straight out of play despite little pressure and the need to only float one in thanks to zlatan ibrahimovic’s aerial prowess. rooney hasn’t scored two goals for man utd in open play since boxing day 2014. that was arguably his last stellar performance having scored two and assisted the other in a 3-1 win at home to newcastle, coincidentally playing a similar role – on paper at least – to sunday. rooney’s no.10 role of today (watford) compared to two seasons ago (newcastle). the bully boys troy deeney and odion ighalo formed a premier league partnership to be wary of last season having scored 28 of watford’s 40 league goals. but their contributions aren’t just limited to goals. captain deeney – who sealed victory with the last minute penalty – clearly loves a physical battle and ighalo doesn’t shirk an opportunity to hold off a defender, particularly when receiving the ball to feet. despite missing an open goal following a lack of communication between david de gea and chris smalling, ighalo provided a couple of examples of his close control, including a training ground move from a free-kick that led to the opening goal. watford’s balance unlike their opponents, watford looked balanced in the new formation introduced by mazzarri. the wing-backs allow a trio in midfield that’s certainly getting the best from etienne capoue having scored four goals from five league appearances already. that’s a drastic improvement on last season’s zero in 33. the frenchman was also top for tackles with five from six during this game. it was no coincidence that his replacement, zuniga, also exploited his license to attack by scoring with his first touch and winning the injury-time penalty. the aim when facing a wing-back system is to force them into a full-back position, reducing their attacking threat while creating more space for your midfield. but despite mourinho opting for pace in the shape of martial and rashford, daryl janmaat (until substituted in the 51st minute) and jose holebas provided plenty of width. roberto pereyra was tasked with the creative role behind the strikers and managed to provide the accurate cut-back for zuniga’s goal. fergie days without the quality since sir alex ferguson’s retirement in 2013, united and now mourinho have been seeking a return to those glory days. the last three games for man utd has seen a number of attempted crosses that is reminiscent of the fergie era with david beckham and ryan giggs on either flank, whipping balls in for the two forwards and paul scholes to convert. this season against hull, man utd achieved nine from 41 crosses and six from 25 during the defeat to man city. the difference between pre-2013/14 season and now is that there’s just one forward and the quality of delivery isn’t as good. in fact, the quantity of sunday’s games (6/33) is very similar to ferguson’s last game in charge, the 5-5 draw at west brom. during that game at the hawthorns, man utd succeeded with nine from 32 crosses and three of those resulted in goals. against watford, only two crosses created a chance, while rashford’s goal was the outcome of a poorly cleared cross. against watford, man utd completed nearly twice as many passes (345 to 184) but only managed to create the same number of chances from open play (five). a poor return when you consider the names in united’s side. sunday’s crosses compared to ferguson’s last game in charge in 2013. summary watford will need to try and perform to similar levels against ‘lesser’ opposition so to ensure they won’t face a relegation battle. man utd and mourinho have plenty of work to do. introducing a natural central midfielder such as michael carrick, morgan schneiderlin, ander herrera or daley blind for rooney might provide a better balance to the side while bringing more out of their star acquisition, pogba. epl results (gameweek 5): chelsea 1-2 liverpool hull 1-4 arsenal leicester 3-0 burnley man city 4-0 bournemouth west brom 4-2 west ham
