thank you, thank you! i am flattered by the nomination and humbled by the win. ironically enough, i’m writing my interview answers while on a flight. what is it about flying that makes one think so much clearer at 30,000 feet? now to answer your question, how do i approach my job differently? with sarcasm. kidding, but seriously…you’ve got to be able to think holistically and ensure all of the pieces fit together. the creative has to be on point to your messaging, which has to be executed flawlessly. thinking through every touchpoint is critically important and a value i like to think i bring to the table. one of my elementary teachers once described me as “tenacious” and i’ve always taken it as a compliment. that characteristic also applies to how i approach my work. no matter which role you obtain, you need to be willing to be a team player and do what it takes to get the job done. no piece is too small or too big. what kind of accounts/projects do you currently work on? being on the client side of life, i solely work on one account (sun country) from every angle. at sun country, i specifically oversee our marketing strategy, which is inclusive of public relations, paid media, crisis communications, sports and event marketing, and overall brand positioning and development. what's the best advice you've ever received? one can never have too much advice so how about a smattering of best advice? here are tidbits of advice i’ve heard as well as some provided by the creative and marketing team. • own it. own the details, own the mistakes, own every piece of your work and give credit to those who contributed. • if you have a problem, bring a solution. • help yourself. • figure it out. • be transparent. • leave the situation/company/department better than you found it. make it better. • don’t take yourself too seriously. • stop apologizing. for cryin’ out loud, stop apologizing. i heard this one at ad fed2’s women in leadership panel event and couldn’t get over how true it rang. as women, it’s in our nature to tend to apologize for everything. well knock it off. • remember always keep a work/life balance. • stay humble. be grateful. • believe in yourself. believe in your work. if you don’t, no one else will. • jump into the deep end of leadership opportunity. • it’s okay to fail. • don’t cry at work. • continue to ask why. • be willing and open to learn. • distract with accessories. • when you make a mistake, don’t dwell on it. focus on all the things that were right. • never hit “reply all” until you’re absolutely ready. • network, network, network. networking is so important. take advantage of various networking opportunities. it’s guaranteed to pay off as you navigate your career. what gets you excited to come to work everyday? it may sound cliché, but in my role, every day is different which makes it all the more exciting. the nature of the airline industry is constantly challenging, ever changing, and thrilling all wrapped up into one. coincidentally, the marketing/advertising world is similar in its ever evolving nature. there is no rule book or right way to do something and that’s what makes our world as marketers particularly enticing. as soon as you think you know it all, you don’t, which in turn, builds continual demand to be innovative. being challenged fuels my drive. also, i’ve always been intrigued by travel and the value it delivers of making life richer through experiencing various cultures, places, and people. oh and food, don’t forget the food. those experiences are what matter in life. being able to work in the travel, tourism, and aviation category is something i cherish. and of course, the flight benefits don’t hurt either. what has been some of your proudest work? to simply put it, i am incredibly proud to work for sun country. i’ve been with the company for a little over six years now and it’s been such a pleasure to see this airline grow into what it is today. it’s an honor to be a part of that growth, and in turn, grow with it. if i had to nail down some of our finest moments, i’d say the work i’m most proud of is our brand campaign development as a whole. sun country’s history of 34 years is a real doozy (seriously, hollywood couldn’t even write this script). we’ve been able to reinforce what makes sun country such a unique player in this market and the industry as a whole. sun country’s personality is bursting at the seams with a down-to-earth friendliness, combined with a sense of comfort and easiness that not every brand can offer, especially in the airline category. it’s been so rewarding to explore that voice and leverage that point of difference through campaign work spanning all of our communication channels. there is so much more potential to tap into from a brand positioning standpoint and i am confident my team’s proudest work is yet ahead. who is one person who has helped you get where you are? or, one person you really look up to? tough question. i don’t believe there is only one person who shapes who/where you are. i have been fortunate over the course of my career to have access to learn from various top-level leaders. i’ve observed how they communicate, motivate, their leadership style, how they excel in their strength areas and rely on others to help balance their weaknesses. pay attention to those leaders around you. you can learn a lot. as far as specific people go, wendy williams blackshaw hired me at sun country which created a lot of opportunity for me. she’s now the vice president of marketing for the 2018 super bowl host committee so as you can imagine, she’s a powerhouse. stan gadek, former ceo at sun country, has been and continues to be a huge mentor to me as well. i also have bodil forsling and brittany chaffee on my team, as well as my current manager, peter martin, and the owner of our airline, marty davis, to thank. they are the best of the best, continually inspire me, and i am privileged to work with them and learn from them every day. additionally, we have an extremely talented in-house creative team that is key in our success. i’m also incredibly thankful and look up to a lot of the employees at sun country. their passion and dedication to the success of the airline is unbelievable. lastly, who would i be if i didn’t thank my family and friends?
