journal publications about archive shakespeare reading paul: heavenly fraud in the winter’s tale may 24th, 2017 a couple of days before the opening of our conference, i woke up before dawn to avoid the crowds and went down to the old city to visit the church of the holy sepulchre. under a dark and cavernous rotunda, before the shrine covering the tomb from which jesus is said to have been resurrected, priests dressed in splendid vestments and swinging smoky censers of fragrant incense, sang prayers in baritone harmony and placed communion wafers in the mouths of the few worshippers in attendance. during the performance of that ceremony i sensed the tangible power of their faith. though i didn’t share it, i was very conscious of the gravity of the subject of my upcoming talk. adaptation[1] hermione’s apparently miraculous return from death to life during the last scene of the winter’s tale is widely understood by critics as shakespeare’s adaptation of or midrash upon biblical accounts of the resurrection of jesus.[2] the question i wish to consider today is how did the playwright intend his audience to respond to the interpretation of those accounts implied in the play’s multiple allusions. read the rest of this entry » posted in miscellaneous, scholarship | no comments israel 2017–day 6 may 20th, 2017 18 pictures from the highest region of the country, today we head for the lowest point in the world at the dead sea, 1412 feet below sea level. the continuing haze produced by unusual heat for this time of year reduces visibility of the sea of galilee from our first stop, the shrine of the beatitudes where jesus is reputed to have preached the sermon on the mount. the place is packed with christian pilgrim tour buses. next stop is the outflow of the jordan river near tiberias, where another shrine has been set up to allow pilgrims to experience the kind of immersion that john the baptist provided for jesus. this tree-shaded river bank facility has been created by the israel tourist board to replace what is assumed to be the actual site further south, since there’s not enough water there to carry out the ritual. as we continue southward, the temperature climbs and the land becomes more barren.  we stop at the site of the roman city of bet shean, which includes an intact original amphitheatre, bathhouse and collonade. its position at the intersection of north-south and east-west trade routes and its water supply from springs upstream account for the city’s location. its destruction by massive earthquakes explains why it wasn’t buried by later civilizations. we’re now in the west bank, under israeli sovereignty but palestinian administrative jurisdiction.  the poverty is evident. the highway is paralleled by tall fences and crossed by roads heading for checkpoint crossings into jordan, which lies on the east bank of the dried up river. the other side looks green with agricultural fields backed up by brown mountains.  on our side one sees some agricultural production in hoop houses and date plantations, but most of the land seems uninhabited, except where the modern houses of fenced jewish settlements appear on hilltops. the valley opens out into the blue expanse of the dead sea to the east and the lifeless eroded cliffs of the judaean desert to the west. we pass the cave openings of qumran, where the dead sea scrolls were discovered, and the oasis of ein gedi, where david hid from pursuit by king saul. gabi expresses alarm about sinking water levels due to climate change and upstream usage and tells us about joint jordanian/israeli efforts to maintain a channel between the northern and southern portions and to dig a canal to bring water downhill from the red sea.  the reason for these efforts is to maintain the tourist industry that supports numerous las vegas-type hotels on its shores. we disembark at one called danielle, a high rise between cliffs and beach with a twelve story atrium, exhausted by the afternoon heat. signs here are in hebrew, english and russian and russian is the language most heard from guests and staff. as the sun lowers i walk down to the beach occupied by people of many shapes and sizes and littered with cigarette butts.  with my baseball hat and sunglasses on for protection, i enter the tepid greasy-feeling water, lie on my back and put the visor over my face.  i remain there motionless for half an hour staring up at the pure blue sky. it’s an interesting experience, but i have no desire to repeat it. posted in excursions, israel 2017, miscellaneous | no comments israel 2017–day 5 may 20th, 2017 30 photos first stop today is the hula valley nature preserve, a national park providing a twice-a-year stopover spot for mass avian migrations from europe to africa and also attracting birders from all over the world.  since its not migration time, we get a “fourth dimension” media experience, including 3d glasses, moving seats, air jets and bubbles describing the restoration of this large wetland from reclamation projects that drained it and channeled all its water for agricultural uses. then we ascend westward into mountains bordering lebanon to safed or tsvat, an ancient hill town that has provided the home for haredi since the middle ages. here they wrote and preserved books of the kabbalah, which decoded sentences, words and letters of the torah into secret mystical meanings for initiates only. most of the roads leading to safed are closed by police to accommodate the tour bus traffic bringing hundreds of thousands of haredi today to a shrine across the valley where they join the locals in celebrating the birthday of one their founders and celebrate the festival of lag b’omer. we visit the municipal art gallery featuring the work of nicki imber, a legendary holocaust survivor, adventurer and activist, and are greeted by the town’s vice mayor. we wander through ancient covered streets lined with shops selling kabbalah-themed judaica and enter a medieval circular sephardic synagogue where the caretaker opens the ark to reveal the sacred scrolls. next on the itinerary is the golan heights, mountainous territory on the east side of the hula valley annexed from syria during the six-day war in 1967, after it had been used for continual shelling of the jewish communities below.  this large territory remains sparsely populated and still highly militarized.  at the summit of a mountain we visit a former syrian fortress now transformed into a historical park, decorated with sculptures by a local artist, where we can explore abandoned gun emplacements and underground bunkers. one can see green agricultural fields below in all directions farmed by kibbutzim as well as the border with syria that has been quiet lately as a result of the civil war in that country. a neighboring mountain holds an israeli army outpost. a group of blue hatted un observers are getting a guided tour of this location at the start of their deployment. on the way back to kvar blum, we stop for tasting at omer winery, a successful family enterprise that takes advantage of the fertile soil and chilly climate of the heights and ships internationally. posted in excursions, israel 2017, miscellaneous | no comments israel 2017–day 4 may 14th, 2017 26 pictures after the tour bus heads north without us, we are picked up at the hotel by yair caro. before we left the states, jan searched the internet for people we might meet in israel and discovered that he was a second cousin of mine whose brother gustave we had met in grenoble in 1969 and whose grandmother, ida blum, was the sister of my grandfather adolf gruenwald. ruggedly handsome, deep voiced and fluent in english and authoritative in manner, he drives through the arab part of the old city, where elegant but dilapidated buildings are now being renovated, gentrified, and repurposed by the municipality. on a new freeway, we pass through a vast petrochemical complex producing a brown cloud spreading inland. caro points out one of the campuses of the university of haifa, where he teaches mathematics and education.  i had googled him earlier and learned that he’s published 150 papers in the theoretical field of “combinatorics.” a fenced section of pristine vegetation he says is part of an environmental preserve owned by the army actually serves as a storage facility for the nuclear warheads that israel is not officially supposed to possess.  we stop briefly at the mound of megiddo, a seventeen-layer architectural dig also known as amageddon. we arrive at kibbutz geva, the home caro’s mother rachel found in 1938 after her own heroic escape from the nazis who had murdered her parents and grandparents, including ida blum, the sister of my maternal grandfather. he points out cowsheds, horse corrals, and factories where the industrial control mechanisms invented by the kibbutz are produced. in the distance we see the kibbutz’s cropland, vineyards, and orchards. he refers to the vista as “toscana.” shaded by large cypresses next to the road lies the cemetery where his parents are buried, a favorite place, he says, where he’s now headed. on the opposite side of the road teenagers hang out in a shady grove. across a deep ravine, he points out another village, the home of his brother, organized as a cooperative moshave rather than a communally owned kibbutz. we walk by a group of semidetached houses surrounded by flower gardens, to his home and are welcomed with food and drink by rachel, his wife. she brings out scrapbooks of genealogical charts and pictures of relatives that trace our blood ties. more people of all ages start arriving: yair’s brother and his wife, their kids and grandkids, yair and rachel’s son and daughter now living in berlin but here for a visit, and his sister. it’s hard for me to keep track of who’s who, but i bask in the feeling of being surrounded by family, since i grew up without any aunts or uncles or cousins in the united states. after the younger folks go their various ways, the discussion turns to life on the kibbutz.  we learn that yair is the mayor of geva. he speaks with sadness about his difficulties guiding the older members in the direction of privatization that’s necessary for the community to survive–a process going forward in most kibbutzim for better and for worse. when he learns that jan has been mayor of san luis obispo, our home town, he asks about the political currents there and finds it hard to believe that she loved the job. on the drive to nazareth where we’ll rejoin our tour group, we learn that yair was president of his university and is now relieved of the onerous duty of having to crawl on his knees and beg for money. stuck in the city’s chaotic  traffic, he says, “now you see what it’s like in an arab city.” after another goodbye jan and i wander in the heat and press of crowds of pilgrims searching for the entrance of the basilica of the annunciation. the building was constructed by the catholic church in the 20th century amidst ongoing territorial rivalry among jews, muslims and various christian factions. it’s mercifully cool inside, but the massive, fortress-like structure leaves me cold.  on the way back to the bus, at the site of a small mosque adjacent to the basilica, gabi points out a sign with a quotation from the koran that recently replaced another much more hostile and provocative passage. a bedraggled beggar mingles with our group, one hand extended and the other pulling up his pant leg to reveal what looks like an immense running sore. a short bus ride takes us to our next lodging, kibbutz kvar blum, located in the hula valley, a lush green paradise of nature preserves, orchards and cropland situated in “the finger” extending north between the mountains of lebanon to the west and the golan heights, annexed from syria, to the east. this is one of the largest and most prosperous of kibbutzim. in addition to a large international business in drip irrigation devices and extensive agricultural production, kvar blum runs a five-star luxury resort named “pastoral.” we walk through the manicured gardens leading to our palatial room. i swim in the olympic sized pool, graced with bar and bikini-clad guests. in the lavish dining room, the walls are decorated with black and white photographs of the original settlers eating around stark tables after their hard day’s work. i wonder how they would regard its present stage of evolution. posted in excursions, israel 2017, miscellaneous | no
