skip to content sportolysis everything about sports! about published july 12th, 2016 by matt outdoor survivalism: the ultimate sport for anyone who regularly read this blog, you know that i am a sports enthusiast. i will watch pretty much any sport there is out there, and every year i find more and more of my time taken up by sports, which is part of the reason i started this blog, so i could keep track of all them. well, the latest sport i have been watching a lot of ultimate survivalism. it’s similar to survivor and the discovery channel’s survivor man, but with a twist. there are basically two different people who travel through a wilderness type setting with a different set of tools, one modern and one primitive, and the viewer gets to see how each person reacts to the environment with the different tools given to them. survivalism with modern tools both of the people on the show are real survivalists, but they are given different tools and dropped in different locations. the first guy gets to use modern survival tools. he doesn’t have anything too fancy because if he had gps, cell phones, and guns, it wouldn’t be much of a survival show. instead, he has a bug out bag with essential survival items. he might have a few utility knives, some ropes of lanyards of some kind, maybe something to make an emergency shelter of some kind. this kind of stuff, but nothing major. so, he uses the tools he has to go through the wild and make it back to the home base. survivalism with primitive tools now, the second survivalist doesn’t get any modern tools and is forced to live off the land in a much more primitive fashion. instead of getting a survival knife, he has to make his own out of rocks or broken glass. instead of having some kind of portable purifier in his backpack, he needs to make a water filter the old fashion way with sand, rocks, and some type of home-fashioned screening. the show does a great job contrasting the modern methods and old-school techniques for survivalism, and it’s really entertaining and actually educational. one thing that neither person is given is any kind of disaster food supplies. both people are expected to hunt or forage for their food. it’s just that one person has modern tools to do so, and the other person has to create their own tools using the environment around them. my own experience camping now, i haven’t always had the best experiences camping, but i think after watching this show that i might a bit more of an effort to get out in the great outdoors and see what all it has to offer. like i said, the two main survivalists on this show are doing some really cool things that i would have never thought to do for food, to fish with, or to build a shelter. it would be really interesting to give a few of their tips a try out in the wild. of course, unlike them, i will be sure to bring my cell phone in case i get lost. sports published february 26th, 2015 by matt competitive shooting with 1911 tactical grips as you know, i’ve elsewhere on this blog that i watch just about every major sport know to man. i’m a sports nut. i can’t get enough of them. but for all of the sports that i watch i have never gotten much into competitive shooting, never really watched it. there’s no particular reason why. most likely it’s probably because it’s not on espn! :] but this weekend as i was flipping through the channels i stumbled across the outdoors channel and they were airing a marksmanship competition with the 1911 pistol. now i don’t personally know too much about guns, but just from watching the show, i came to know that the 1911 pistol was one of the first semi-automatic pistols to be developed and was originally developed for the american military in world war i. anyway, the competition was a weekend long event, but this day’s event were solely focused on the 1911 handgun. in something that looked similar to a game of bowling, the different marksman would take turns shooting at targets, some of which were stationary and some were moving. they even had a course of sorts where the marksman would walk through a scenario that would present a number of different options such as a burglary or car robbery. it reminded me of the movie dirty harry. have you see it? well, in one scene they have an entire makeshift town setup where the police officers would go to practice shooting. there was one target that popped up with a hostage in hand. there was a house were different shooters would appear. it was very reminiscent of the movie and was very interesting to watch. the other thing that was interesting to me was that the different marksman put different 1911 pistol hand grips on their gun depending on the situation they knew they would be in. in the city/urban scenario they had a different set of handgrips than they did for the long range shoot off. in some sense, the grips were acting like a golf club is to a golfer. as i am sure you are well aware, golfers will choose different clubs depending on how far away they are from the tee. the driver hits the farthest and is usually only used as the first hit. from there you have you irons, chippers, putters, and hybrids. any good golfer knows exactly the type of club that he needs to make a shot, and this really appealed to me about the shooting competition. these people knew their distances and their targets so well, that they rotated out handgun accessories and supplies to match what they were up against. this shows a tremendous amount of dedication and knowledge of the sport that is not matched. after becoming so intrigued about this event i looked up the outdoors channel’s schedule and they have different competitions like this with different guns almost every month. i had never really given this consideration before today, but i know for a fact i will be dvring these in the future. i sure am glad that i ran across them. sports published october 28th, 2014 by matt being a cpa accountant in the sport industry there are many different career paths you can take with an accounting degree. some people choose to go into public accounting and work for large firms whereas other people prefer to work for smaller more localized firms. more over there are some people who choose to work in industry. every large company has a team of internal accountants and cpas that prepare their taxes, quarterlies, and payroll information. this might sound like a boring job to most people, but some cpas are lucky enough to enjoy a career in the sports industry. i had the pleasure of meeting just such a person on a flight out to los angeles a few weeks ago. his name was dave. as you guys know i am a huge sports fan and love almost all professional sports, but basketball is by far one of my favorites. as i sat down in my seat on the plane, dave sat down next to me and we started the usual airplane chitchat. we talked about where we are from and where we were going. this conversation eventually led us a to a talk about our jobs. dave said that he is a cpa and internal auditor for the lakers. can you believe that? dave said that went to school in the 1980s and studied accounting. after college he went on to get his masters in accounting and he started studying for the cpa exam. he used a study guide to pass the cpa examination and he started looking for a job in an accounting firm. i was interesting in how he was able to pass the test so easily because i’ve heard the cpa exam is more difficult than the bar and most other professional examinations. dave told me that he studied with cpa excel information and had to put in at least three hours of studying each night in other to pass all of the sections before the deadline. i’m not sure about you, but there’s no way i could have done this. college wasn’t exactly my thing and standardized exams definitely aren’t. i’m sure a course like the cpaexcel review by wiley cpa would have helped me. anyway, on to the good stuff. dave said that he not only gets to work one-on-one with the players, coaches, and staff, but he also gets to structure finance deals and other business agreements for the team. obviously he couldn’t go into too much detail because of the type of information, but it was still pretty awesome to think that someone can turn a boring career as an accountant into such an interesting job. i asked him what he thought the turning point in his career was and he said studying for the cpa exam. i thought this was a little strange, but he told me that the discipline he learned while he was studying helped him focus on goals and propel him into his career today. as i walked off the plane that day, i thought to myself that i should try to focus more of my energy on accomplishing goals like dave did. that’s exactly what i’m going to do. i hope this isn’t too inspirational and serious for you, but i just wanted to write about what i was feeling. cheers and thanks for reading. sports published july 28th, 2014 by matt becoming a sports writer i get the question from readers and friends every now asking what steps can be taken to start a career in the field of sports. and since i have the most experience with writing and dealing with sports writers, i naturally bring it back to my own experiences. so here are the best tips i can give for beginning a career in the sporting industry. take them for what they are worth! step one should be an easy one looking to start a career in sports: immerse yourself in the culture. what do i mean by this? well, the sporting scene has its own culture to it.and not only does the sporting scene have its own culture but different sports have their own distinct culture. you need to immerse yourself into this and into the game. get to know everything there is behind it, the players, the owners, team politics, and the drafting process. build you knowledge of the game so much so that you are an authority on the game and the process behind the game. this, as i said above, should be easy because this is your passion. i’m basically asking you to research what you already probably do every single day, so it doesn’t even seem like work at this point. step two, practice your writing. now this is where it starts to sounds a little bit more like work, but it’s how you start off a career. no one will want to hire an inexperienced writer who doesn’t have a hold of his grammar and doesn’t know how to use obtain and attain. you need to write sample pieces and develop a portfolio of op eds and letters that you can present to people who ask you for writing samples. you could even start a blog like me! step three, get an internship at a local paper. one of the best ways to start off a career is to get an internship at a local paper. usually local papers are always looking for help on deck and it will really allow you to practice your grammar and develop a writing style that is unique to you. if they don’t have an intern as a sports writer currently, be sure to ask them if you can follow that beat. it can never hurt to ask and if the spot is open, just like that you are already doing what you want to do. just make sure to double and triple proofread your pieces before you send them to the editor. you want to make a good impression on them, so you don’t want any glaring typos or grammar mistakes. if you need help explaining invoke vs evoke, ask a friend or someone you know who is good with english. that can cause people to not take you seriously and eventually stop publishing your stories. that is more or less what i did as a kid to get involved in sports writing. i didn’t take it to a full-fledged sports career path, but i do spend a lot of my time working on sports related projects and have a number of friends in the industry, so i think this is an excellent path to start with. sports writing published july 16th, 2014 by matt lebron going back to cleveland? so i’m sure you’ve all heard by now that lebron will be making his way back to his home state of ohio to play with the cleveland cavaliers. he released a letter stating his reasons for this decision and it seems that he has in many ways grown up a bit since his 2010 decision to move down to miami. the letter reads in many ways as a homesick letter from someone who just wants to come back. it has many people saying things like, “oh i used to hate lebron but now i like him again. this letter is great.” well, what should we have expected? did we really expect him to announce his leaving of the heat in the same way that he announced his leaving of the cavs? after all of the hate that he got last time around, of course we should have expected a heartfelt, touch-feely letter or sorts. so i don’t think we should really be reading too much into this letter. what we should be talking about is how this positions lebron for the rest of his career. lebron james is already 29 years old and will be turning 30 at the end of the year, so while he still has a good five years left in him, there probably won’t be much more beyond that. so will this trade allow lebron to finally prove himself as the leader he wants to be? because let’s face it, he didn’t exactly lead the heat. yes, he was a leading player, oftentimes a high scorer, but he was not the leader of the miami heat. the entire team had to play around his feelings and his mood swings through each and every game as if he was a teenage girl. that is not a quality of a team leader. or course, not many people remember that lebron actually went to the nba finals once before joining the miami heat—and guess who he played against? the san antonio spurs. that’s right, lebron as a cavalier played his first finals series against tim duncan and the spurs and got taken out in a clean sweep. this also means that lebron has faced duncan and his team three different times in the nba finals. talk about a match up. i think the old michael jordan karl malone years only happened twice. realistically, it is just a major testament to the holding power that duncan and the spurs have. so what should we expect this year? will lebron take his team to the nba finals again? or will the remaining members of the miami heat go to the nba finals? either way, this decision will set lebron apart for the rest of his career and either make him another great nba player for the record books or one of the true all-time greats who lead their team to victory time and time again. only time will tell. but how exciting would it be to see lebron take on the spurs for a third year in a row? that and a world cup victory and it’d be a perfect year here’s to hoping! basketball sports published july 12th, 2014 by matt the us and the world cup soccer is the world’s most popular sport and it seems like it is finally catching on in the united states—and just in time. now i’m not going to be some hipster and try to say that i like soccer “before it was cool” or anything like that. i, just like many americans, took some convincing to get behind the soccer train, but i will say that i can now enjoy a good game of soccer. it’s still not my favorite sport, and i much prefer american football, but i can get down to a good game of soccer. so why hasn’t soccer caught on much in the united states? i’m not really sure. one possible reason is that the united states is such a leader in so many of the world’s other sports. for instance, if you’re going to play basketball professionally, you’re more than likely going to come to the united states. the same goes for baseball. people come from all over the world to play basketball and baseball in america. and in the case of football, most other countries don’t even have comparable football leagues, so america really is the only place where it can be played. hockey is a popular sport in other countries, but you find the largest concentration in america and canada. and maybe another reason is that america is so focused on all of these other sports that it doesn’t devote much time or energy into soccer. who really knows? the important thing is that it’s growing in its popularity and america’s team is actually starting to get pretty good. this year, despite getting dealt a terrible round of picks, were managed to make it decently far due to the way the scoring works in the world cup. we didn’t make it to the finals—in fact we didn’t even make it to the semi finals but we advanced much farther than we have in any year in recent history. so will soccer continue to rise in popularity? i think so. my personal opinion is that it is the new hip sport for kids to watch. for those who have become disenchanted by how sloppy basketball has come and by how boring baseball can be to the untrained observer, soccer offers a sport that is active and is still on the cutting edge—at least in the us. and this is exactly what hipsters gravitate towards—something that is just about to go mainstream that they can later claimed that they “liked first.” so give it five years or so and we’ll probably start to see america caring a lot more about soccer than it currently does as kid get more into it at school and other extra-curricular activities. and as i said earlier, the better our team becomes on a international stage, the more the bandwagon fans will glob on to the train before it fully leaves the station. who knows, maybe soccer will become america’s new sport. here’s to hoping we go all the way next year! sports published june 15th, 2014 by matt can lebron make it? so there is still, in 2014, a lot of talk going around about whether or not lebron is really all that he is cracked up to be. this year is his fifth time being in the nba finals, and he could be on his way for a third consecutive nba championship ring. but, the heat are not off to a very good start. they are currently down 3 to 1 to the san antonia spurs, the team that rivaled them last year. obviously everyone remembers last year’s nba finals, but the memory span of so many sports fans (or at least the passive sports fan) is so short that i bet not many people remember that lebron actually faced this same spurs team in the 2007 nba finals. that’s right, back when lebron was on the cavaliers, he made it to the finals and got royally trounced by tim duncan and his crew. the spurs took the series in a clean sweep, making it one of the more boring nba finals. well, this year isn’t off to a much different start. while the heat have won one game, the spurs are up 3 to 1, and each of those three games they have won by 15 or more points—and the game they did lose they only lost by two points. now as far as a final series for professional sports goes, that is huge! to lose by even ten points is pretty close to a blow out, let along 15, and for all three games! so this is leading many to wonder whether or not lebron james really is that great. he certainly puts a lot of points on the board each night, but he seems to be widely sporadic in his performance. he generally can’t be relied on during fourth quarter situations and his team seems to have cater to these mood swings he has in performance. he is not the kind of team leader that you get out of dwyane wade. lebron james is like the baby brother of the team that everyone needs to be mindful of and make sure he doesn’t get upset, otherwise he might throw the game in the fourth quarter. so, we’ll see how things go in the next game, which is set to be played in san antonio, so the spurs will have home court advantage and could clinch the series in a 4-1 victory. my prediction, for what it is worth is that miami will pull out one more win, and the spurs will win game six for a 4-2 series win. this is sort of unfortunate too because game six will be in miami and it’s never as cool to see teams win the series when they are not at their home court. the crowd is always upset, and the confetti and celebrations are never quite the same. so, in that sense, i hope i am wrong and that the spurs will be able to win at home. what are your predictions?
