by matt 1 the grisly details… how we got to here math was hard for me in school. not because it was difficult to arrive at the correct answer, but because the teaching pattern for math emphasized notation and the standardized algorithm above deep understanding.  math seemed to operate as something with varying behavior instead of concrete laws as you would expect.  it didn’t help that my family moved around a bit for a few years, i spent one year of school attending four different schools in 3 states, everyone was doing something different.  so for me, math seemed to have the feel of english-grammar with varying rules and different dialects. later in life i rekindled some love for math when i met and befriended someone with a sincere passion and deep understanding. because of this, i was 30 when i truly understood the way numbers work in our base-10 system, it took me really having to understand base-2 to finally get it. with this came a surprising revelation of what i’d not fully grasped in the past and so i’m on a journey to build in this understanding in from the start for my twin boys, my goal is to give them a deep understanding of math, rather than a piece of scrap paper and a pattern.  when the boys were very young, we emphasized that they learn the digits 0-9 by painting them (and the alphabet) on a wall in our living room, we painted it low to the ground so they could point and touch all the symbols as they learned and repeated them. my boys are just over three years old now and starting to really count things on their own. with this rising interest in numbers liz and i decided to investigate getting the boys each an abacus. there are varying designs and we weren’t sure what all was possible to teach with an abacus, so we read about the history of the abacus on wikipedia and watched some youtube videos, (my favorite being a six year old girl in an upside-down tiara schooling me on using the japanese style abacus).  thus armed we had noted that ikea sells a big and colorful abacus so we went out and bought two the next day. when we brought them home we discovered that they have 10 beads per row, this created a wonderful couple of days of conversation in our house and with friends, the core question being, should there be 10 beads or 9 beads on the row of an abacus? continue reading → posted in randomness. working remotely and packing! july 16, 2014 by matt 0 now that i’m officially full-time remote, i’m packing in earnest and prepping for moving to seattle.  i’d love to spend some of my time on ios projects, but packing is most important for now. randomly picked up an old cast iron skillet a few weeks back and i spent some fun time cleaning and restoring the thing to usability.  really made me interested in the process and history of cast iron in the united states.  since playing with the one small skillet i’ve found a few more pans that are interesting; a nice pair of old griswold small-logo pans (1930’s-1950’s apparently) and those have cleaned up amazingly.  just started cooking in those after getting them cleaned and seasoned.  so far so good, it requires that i learn a little more about cooking techniques and use more oil than i would in my non-stick (maybe use less oil after i get better at controlling temperature).  but overall the process and product is really good. i found an old aebleskiver pan (pancake balls) and i’ve just finished the cleaning steps on that one, but i’ve been reading about and watching videos on how to cook these things and i can’t wait to make some pancake balls for the family. the only downside to this new interest in cast iron is that i’ve added like another 20lbs of stuff to pack and move. till the next random update! posted in randomness. where does the time go? june 11, 2014 by matt 0 i have a weekly reminder to post something on my website, i always look at it and ask myself “do i have anything worth posting?”.  commonly the answer is “no”, mostly because i just don’t like to just talk about nothing. so, where has the time gone these last six months since my last post? cancer : i was diagnosed at the end of dec with thyroid cancer, i actually received a call with the diagnosis on dec 24th.  since then, i’ve gone through surgery, recovery, special diets, radiation therapy, losing sense of taste, and more recovery.  thankfully at this point things are mostly back to normal, there’s still some issues from surgery and i’ll be forever monitoring for the cancer to make a comeback, but all in all, it went well considering how scary it can be to have a cancer diagnosis. random : i put together a drawdio kit from adafruit, endless fun with that thing.  check it out here – http://web.media.mit.edu/~silver/drawdio/ packing : i’ve been packing the house as best as i can, my management has offered me a full-time remote opportunity so i’m planning to make the most of that (once the paperwork is final) and move the family to seattle area. gaming : i just finished playing transistor, which was excellent and i’ll have to play through it a few more times for some additional fun.  it didn’t capture me the way that bastion did, but it’s very much an excellent game.  i’ve also picked up the latest edition of neuroshima hex, the new art really stands out well.  other than that, all my games are packed up already. what to do next? : i’m still interested in ios development and creating games with unity, i keep buying books and not having the time to devote to them.  things are calming down again in life, so maybe i’ll get back to those after the move.  i still want to do some design on inertia, perhaps i’ll work on a vassal module for it so that we can play without physical pieces, i haven’t researched module development so no idea if it’s easier than cutting out a bajillion hex tokens by hand. here’s to more frequent updates! posted in randomness. inertia – my first board game design december 18, 2013 by matt 0 i haven’t talked much about inertia.  it’s my board game project that i got started in a big kick a few months back.  i’ve designed all the pieces, the board and the rules all through a few weeks. i’ve set it aside a lot lately and i keep pondering how to change the way that players interact to get the feel that i want out of the game. basically the biggest mechanic i want to play with is how players take their turns.  this is a ship battle game and i’m trying to get a mechanism that makes the game play and feel fast, and give you a sense of a very tense battle.  i have the players taking turns in a very standard way, draw your hand, place and move, shoot.  this may work for other battle games but this doesn’t achieve what i want for inertia. one of the core principles i want to keep in interia is that everything on the board must move every turn.  however, if i expect the players to be actively engaged with the entire board every turn, the game slows down.  the idea that i’m toying with right now is this. – each round, players have direct command over 5 ships, they take turns placing a token on a ship to highlight that they will be commanding that ship. – once all the tokens are placed, the players take turns moving these ships. – all other ships are moved at their standard speed – the players choose 3 of their 5 ships which will fire this turn, all firing is resolved at the same time. this might play to the existing idea of keeping the battle in narrow focus, perhaps allowing the player to utilize the remaining fleet as a bit of an unknown, helping to shape his opponents movements by having so many options on the table.  the game is intended to be a culmination of many small victories, hence limiting how many ships can shoot on a given turn, this also plays into the idea that bigger ships require concentrated fire.  a player would need to carefully consider how to target and overcome some of the larger ships. i’ll continue to roll this idea around in my head a bit more, i believe that this is a promising direction, but it will take playtesting to know if the premise works. posted in randomness. a calling to rokugan september 22, 2013 by matt 0 my friends who are interested in playing a game of legends of the five rings with me, read on below. the imperial family daimyo seppun ayumu is throwing a large event inviting members from all the great clans.  your daimyo has asked that you attend and represent your clan honorably.  all attending seppun ayumu’s event are also invited to stop in the village of tochi where crane clan daimyo doji haruki has offered refreshments and entertainment to those passing through. to join in the game, look over the information below and choose a character that you could roleplay.  let me know if you have any questions or your choice in the comments or email.  i’ll describe the great clans first, then describe the characters available for each of the clans. continue reading → posted in randomness. back to the tabletop! september 3, 2013 by matt 0 i’ve been reminiscing about legend of the five rings (the tabletop rpg) a bit lately, and decided to try running some games in a sort of one-off fashion. to start with i’ve decided to run the legacy of disaster adventure that aeg gave out a few years ago.  i began this journey by relearning the game, it’s easy to remember most of the game, but there are subtle nuances in the rules.  i’m now creating full character sheets for the 16 premade characters that are part of this adventure. there’s a lot of detail to a character in l5r and it’s always nice to have clear character sheets for new players so that things are easy to follow.  with this in mind, i decided to look for a character sheet for 4th edition that was a form-fillable pdf.  with luck i found someone over at www.daemonstorm.com who had modified the bare pdf from aeg to have editable fields.  after some new calculations and spending some time reorganizing the tabbing, we have a very nice and clean character sheet that does quite a bit of calculation for you.  you can get the file from daemonstorm (forest4thetrees edit) or from smashystudios. in the next few weeks i’ll have these 16 premade characters all fleshed out and a post-session report on how the adventure went. posted in randomness. over a year?! august 7, 2013 by matt 0 sheesh, it’s been over a year since i’ve posted… well, it’s been a crazy year, my boys had their first birthday, my appendix tried to kill me, i traveled to seattle for the first time (decided it was necessary to move there, um, soonish), transitioned teams (java development now, yay!), and now we’re almost around to another birthday for the boys. biggest project i’ve been working on lately is a table-top game, which i’m about to begin playtesting and if things go well i’ll be sharing the details. anyways, it’s been a crazy year, which i’m glad to have survived.  more infrequent updates to follow. posted in randomness. digging in, starting over july 10, 2012 by matt 0 so many buttons got offtrack there for a while, mostly due to playing games with friends in my free time. behind that though, i was still feeling blocked on ios development since i just wasn’t breaking ground on some of the basics with xcode. called a friend who has been a contract developer for a few years for ios apps, he’s seen a few apps through to completion and i asked if he’d be up for doing some paid training. he agreed and we sat down for a 3 hour tutoring session. we ran through a lot of the basics of xcode, ios app structure and what a lot of these buttons do. in many regards i asked a lot of dumb questions, but after that session i felt like i had a much greater handle on what i was doing in this tool. so, i restarted ‘learning ios programming’ with a little more self-esteem on the whole deal. current progress is; continue reading → posted in ios. request for extension may 13, 2012 by matt 0 so i’ve missed my goals for getting a basic app together by this past wednesday. what have i been doing? well, first and foremost i blame valve software for taking up so much of my time while i played with the new puzzle creation tool for portal 2. then i blame apple for having this rather challenging certificate setup process to go through to allow me to push my dev apps to my ipad which i still haven’t gotten re-setup correctly. a little into this week and i’ll be blaming blizzard for releasing diablo 3 which will eat away my time even more. priorities after all… well, i spent some time trying to get xcode setup fully but something about what i’m doing is wrong. i need to spend a few hours just re-reading about the process and start over from scratch. i’m still going to stick to my previous goal of setting up a simple app to just navigate through some menus but i’ll formally request an extension on that. i need to get involved in a local ios developer group, trying to work through some of these questions in a vacuum can be very hard. posted in randomness. gotta make goals may 2, 2012 by matt 0 ok, a bit about myself and learning new things… give me any task, (within reason) and i will figure out a way to accomplish this task and generally with a fair amount of polish. recently most of my examples of this are in technology and at work. having the ability to do this is fantastic; analysis, critical thinking, and creativity go into this to an incredible degree. i’ve learned more solving problems in this way than i’ve ever learned from a book (note: i do use books to solve problems, but just reading a book with no intent is more what i meant). here’s where i falter… i can’t just make up problems to solve. years ago at work i taught myself vbscript and ms access (before i was in the it group) so that i could make some pretty awesome tools in excel or access for teammates to use (they were still using those tools daily for years after i left). last year i put a good amount of work into learning java by solving the problems from project euler. in my few years in it i’ve learned a good bit about databases and sql, learned more about peoplesoft than i think i ever wanted and i’m enjoying solving these new problems. but again, here’s where i stumble, i can’t force myself to learn a new development environment and programming language at home, on my own, just reading the book. i’ve got a couple of solid books on ios and i just can’t get into them without a problem to solve. without a problem to solve, without a sword to sharpen, or a building to erect, i just can’t bring my abilities to bear without a driving reason. what this amounts to is an inability to make incremental goals when i’m the only one interested in the goals. this is a problem in many ways in life (exercise…) but it makes it very difficult to use my evening or other free time in a productive way when i’m the only one watching. so here’s what we’re going to do… continue
