raptors with hats adventures through the looking glass. rss blog archives hacking my life: day 6 - habits 2015-01-13 2:52 am i haven’t been posting here for a while. as it turns out, habits are hard to keep. i thought about how to deal with the awkward numbering of this series, and i decided to simply increment the day only when i write a post. however, i would like to be writing a post every single day. i think writing in this blog is probably a really good habit to have. in general, good habits… are good to have. so this is my confession. read on → life on soylent part 2 2015-01-11 11:31 pm so there’s something about soylent that sucks. no, the taste is okay, it fills you up just fine and near enough as i can tell, i won’t grow a third arm from drinking/eating it. what sucks is preparing single meals. read on → hacking my life: day 5 - arch to the rescue 2014-12-29 8:22 pm so i wasn’t successful in switching to e3. i’m still curious about it and will probably try again, but i had a full sleep and loved it. i will need to figure out how it’ll affect my work. anyways, today’s post is about a dilemma i found myself in earlier today. i had wanted to reinstall my arch linux install to get a fresh start, so i booted into arch via drivedroid and proceeded to (try) to reinstall it. immediately after wiping it i realized i didn’t have an internet connection… read on → hacking my life: day 4 2014-12-27 4:32 am i’m going to be straight to the point: i’m going to try and switch to the everyman sleep schedule. this will be achieved by going from “monosleep” to “segmented sleep” (two 3.5 hour core sleeps), to dual core sleep (3.5h + 1.5h + nap) with the midday nap where one of your e3 naps will be. finally, the transition to full e3 - 3.5 hours, followed by 3x20 minute naps. wish me luck - i’m going to start tonight. hacking my life: day 3 2014-12-26 11:07 pm having done my hour of databases on khan academy i decided to finally start the long slog towards filling the gaps in my mathematics education. about 30 minutes of tearing through the “early math” section i’ve reached 69% completion and i have 52,111 “energy points”. gamification is ridiculously effective, as it turns out. i’m going to aim to do 100,000 points a day, which is about an hour or so at the early levels. i suspect i’ll need to lower that to 50,000 or 25,000 once i start making real progress. despite abusing my sleep schedule severely over the last few days, i’m still tired and wanting to go to bed at 10pm. it turns out i set that pattern pretty hard. that’s it for today :) the interview, part deux: revised thoughts 2014-12-26 4:49 am just a quick post this time. i rewatched the interview tonight, this time with my parents. it was a little awkward at times (as you’d expect) and it made me realize a few things as i got about ¾ of the way through… i don’t think it’s a finished film. i honestly think it’s about 30 days of editing from being complete. i had this opinion on the first viewing, but since it’s not on the blog yet: i think the movie actually does a great job of subverting its own sexism, racism, homophobia and misogyny. in all cases said issues are either outright shamed and shunned, and usually characters are made to look like fools as a direct result. i’m probably going to write a longer post about that later, since i find it pretty interesting. spoiler (click read more if you’ve already seen the movie) read on → hacking my life: day 2 2014-12-26 4:20 am really, this post should be titled hacking my life: day 2 - in which benjamin does a thing. technically, it’s actually day 3 - since it’s 1:20am. had an excellent christmas with friends and family, so i’ve been busy most of the day. i did get to lug my chromebook to and from a lunch/dinner party and was thus able to work on learning sql - i did the “hour of databases” on khan academy. read on → the interview 2014-12-25 4:02 am i had the pleasure of watching “the interview” today. i was honestly not sure if it would be any good, but i had to watch it simply to support freedom of speech. i have a feeling this could end up being one of the most successful films ever produced because of the spe controversy surrounding it. i’m a little worried about the possibility of christmas day terrorist attacks, but i also feel that it’s a risk we have to take. letting threats run our lives is not the american way ™. either way, this movie has a solid chance of becoming an essential item for the average american patriot. eagle poster, old faithful bedspread, uncle sam coffee cup - and a blu-ray of the interview. anyways, it was honestly a pretty excellent movie and most people would enjoy watching it. so you should. come on. do it for freedom. of bitcoins and dogecoins: a new etiquette for tipping 2014-12-25 3:17 am let’s imagine something for a second. in this hypothetical situation, we’re close friends. i randomly come up to you and give you a coin worth 50 cents. puzzled, you ask me why i did this - to which i reply that it’s just a random present. even though i have given you something for free, chances are you’ve come away from this experience with a negative opinion of me. either way, you probably think i’m weird. let’s expand the hypothetical now. read on → hacking my life: day 1 2014-12-24 9:09 pm this post is part of a series. if you’re interested in reading the rest of it, click here. i did something today which may or may not throw me off my schedule - i kept falling back asleep. i was tired, but that’s not why i did it. i had two fascinating dreams and i needed to see how they ended. i’d write them here but they were both a little bizarre. so instead of waking up before 9:00am on a “weekend” (or holiday, as it were), i woke up at around 12:30pm. not a great start, i suppose. what was amusing once i was awake, however, was google now. i have it activated and it’s been following my movements and patterns ever since it was publicly available, so it has a lot of data on me. it helpfully popped up a few minutes ago and effectively said “hey! you! if you don’t leave for work, you’re going to be late!” (time to work: 46 mins). read on → ← older blog archives recent posts hacking my life: day 6 -
