menu home about me *shop* home tour house on hospital hill the old depot project the great smoky mountains old california home tour things i love scavenging reading creating painting rescuing chickens tutorials the weekly letter the smokies the ghost hound of bryson city february 23, 2017 by ashley hackshaw 9 comments i’ve always called her ghost…because she disappears so fast that i’ve often wondered if i’m the only one that sees her. but the other day brett saw her too. he found her curled up in the leaves off the side of our hill. she looked up, surprised, but didn’t make eye contact. that was the longest i’d seen her stay in one place. i think we might have woken her because it was like she was trying to get her wits about her. i don’t even know if she’d show up in a photo…so here’s a quick sketch of ghost: she’s skittish, shy and no threat to anyone. a few times i’ve found her quietly eating from our compost pile….with the chickens eating right next to her. one evening last summer i found her curled up in front of our rocking chairs, soaking up the last of the sun’s rays. now that i think about it there are these small little nests of leaves all around the property where she’s left her impression. when i do see her it results in her disappearance for a while. she doesn’t like to be seen. she’s a ghost of course. i’ve put out food for her but she’s so used to eating scraps around town that i’m not sure she’ll ever eat kibble. i worry about her because she has a too-snug-collar on that has been on too long. i’m going to keep trying to lure her, and maybe one day i’ll be able to catch her. not to keep her, just to get the collar off and to try to have her checked out and vaccinated. beth, the director of our local shelter has offered to help me catch her…but that means ghost has to come back around again soon. one thing’s for sure…if we do catch her she won’t want to stick around for long. i know she’ll be on her merry way again…because she has lived a life as wanderer for far too long. a wanderer is a wanderer. but…maybe she’ll stick around…if she has a warm place to sleep. i’ve asked brett to build her a little shelter off in the woods where she likes to curl up…something with a roof. brett says ghost has been shooed by humans for far too long and she doesn’t trust any of us. i’m always up for a challenge. i mean look at happy: happy’s like a teenager now, just in an old dog suit. anyway, wish us luck. i think ghost would be a welcome addition to our menagerie on hospital hill. when we adopted happy we did get a little sidetracked with our attention on raising money for our lone animal shelter (that needs all the help it can get!) we’ve gotten ten donations from all the states that have been filled in…but we still have a long way to go. we are so close to getting new jersey, illinois and kentucky and we finally got our first donation from maine over christmas! if you know anyone that lives in the blank states we’d love it if you could share our project with them! we’d be appreciative of any amount donation from any state! thank you for helping us help the animals of our rural mountain town that so desperately need it. how to donate by paypal: click here —> paws animal shelter or send funds direct to pawsbc @ yahoo.com **please add “sienna hackshaw project” in the notes with your state so that we update our map and show you our progress as we go! filed under: happy the happiest dog expanding bryson city outdoors – the craft beer department february 22, 2017 by ashley hackshaw 5 comments we are coming up on the second anniversary of bryson city outdoors being open: each year has had some kind of expansion take place and it was cool to see bco featured in our state earlier this year. this year is no different…the team has been hard at work at adding what we call the craft beer department. it’s been almost year in the making and it’s amazing how fast things can come together by over-planning, preparation and good friends. brett and his friends have been adding on to the store downtown in january. ben and brett asked our friend liz to come on board last spring and the conversations on adding a bottle shop for craft beer started almost immediately. western nc has an enormous craft beer industry and tons of great breweries from asheville to bryson city and all along the way, but there are not but a handful of bottle shops that cater to the craft beer clientele, so why not do it ourselves. what goes better with gear than beer! it’s always good to start with a good foundation….unless you are trying to be handicap accessible from the outside and the inside and the floor tilts from the front to the back by 4 inches. i guess that’s what comes with an old building. how do you fix that? they poured the walls straight and the floor sloped. no one would ever know but it allows for a smooth transition both at the front door and into the old building. our initials: brett did this for boo. he wanted her to have her initials in concrete and a place in history of bryson city: below are brett and his friends, erik and jaime, on the second day of framing. they framed the entire building in two days. i can barely get the laundry done in two days! and here is the building later that day all wrapped up and ready for siding. all the windows were upcycled from another salvage, just like the windows in the original building and still in great shape: brett’s friend kyle and two other guys put the siding on the building and finished up the interior too. they chose to stick with the same siding as the original building, which is all locally sourced hemlock wood. it works well on the outside because it’s resistant to rot and bugs. brett and a friend sorted and stacked all of this wood for drying last summer in anticipation of the expansion: hard maple was the choice for the inside. it has been drying for years at the old lumber yard, and without any finish it looks like it has been there forever. liz was the inspiration for the mountain scape on the walls. she is constantly doodling and brett noticed the design repeated over and over in her art. since none of the wood was the same width, it made more sense to try something a little out of the box rather than just hang it horizontally on the wall. i think it looks amazing: finally breaking through from the other side of the store….this is one of windows that was on the outside of the old building. it now serves as a shelf that can be reached from both sides. two inch thick rough sawn lumber was used for these: a reclaimed sink from a remodel in town and mirror from paws thrift shop in town for only $6 completes the look in the bathroom. i love liz’s hat: brett contemplating something important….the tent used to hang on the wall in the old store and they’ve had to move quite a bit around during the renovation: more store progress: shelving and hardware units are extremely expensive, so brett decided it was better to make the ones needed for the new store. the shelves on the wall were made with the same reclaimed pine used in the old store. brett made the shelving unit in the middle with help from his friend jaime. it’s made from a beautiful curly maple and measures 12 feet long and 48 inches high. it took six guys to move it and almost didn’t fit through the door. the floor was stained with concrete coatings (walnut)…one bottle did the whole thing. i bought these huge metal letters from the teddy bear motel in cherokee almost two years ago for $5 each. they have been in storage because i wasn’t sure what i was going to use them for yet. they now hang on the ceiling of the new wing: the beer department is now open for business so stop by if you get a hackshaw 3 comments only 44 more weeks to go. phew. i’ve been reading this book called one continuous mistake and it makes me think a lot about my painting. it gives four noble truths of writing which i think can be applied to almost any practice: 1. painters paint. 2. painting is a process. 3. you don’t know what your painting will be until the end of the process. 4. if painting is your practice, the only way to fail is not to paint. i went so long without painting that i was very rusty…now i feel it all coming back again…and in new ways. here’s what i painted as my daily practice the past two weeks: a watercolor: the power of imagination makes us infinite. – john muir a tiny statue of liberty: here are a few photos i took of the process: circles: lettering: a few tiny watercolor paintings in lockets: abstract pine trees: reclaimed wood and driftwood hearts: and here’s everything i painted last week: maya angelou. i still don’t know what quote i’m going to use loosely painted forest with a thoreau quote: a watercolor trout: an abstract watercolor wash with a quote: mountains: harriet tubman: a custom order of a tiny pig and dragonfly: and i keep going…. i do list some of my ashley hackshaw 8 comments if people wore feathers and wings, very few of them would be clever enough to be crows. -henry ward beecher i tip toe around our property in the morning, hiding from the chickens because they are so mad at me right now. if they see me they start squawking at me and make such a commotion that i’m sure the neighbors can hear them. but i have to keep the cooped up right now in the mornings because that’s when the big hawk comes to eye them. it’s either a cooper’s hawk or a sharp-shinned hawk and in any other situation i would welcome such a beautiful bird to our property….but this particular hawk is drooling over the prospect of tasting my flock. the good news is: i’ve got crows. i’ve noticed that the hawk only comes for breakfast and by noon the crows that live on our property have chased him off. the crows love our property because we are on a low hill but our trees are the tallest around. just like the term “crow’s nest” for a ship, the natural nests look like barrel-like landing you might see on a tall mast. the crows are fearless. they will chase that hawk until he’s long gone. the most amazing thing i’ve noticed is that our chickens understand what the crows are cawing back and forth to each other about. watching them closely i’ve learned some of their language as well. i don’t even notice when they are just talking back and forth to each other but my ears perk up when i hear the initial warning squawk. it’s fast and repetitive almost like the crow is saying: come quick! come quick! come quick! and then i can usually hear the warning travel across to the other nearby hills to as other groups of crows relay the warning message.here’s a video of the crows chasing the hawk off recently….it’s pretty amazing to watch: a video posted by ashley hackshaw (@lilblueboo) on jan 18, 2017 at 4:24pm pst i can easily pick out an aggressive caw, one that will hurt the ears, it is so strong that sometimes i wonder how such a menacing sound can come from such a small size. the deep, growling aggressive caw means that the crows are already on the attack and trying to fend off a predator. i’ll be inside working and when i hear that caw i run outside as fast as i can in a panic…just to make sure the chickens are safe, and to make sure that max didn’t slip outside. sometimes it’s just the stray cat from down the street…who doesn’t really pose a threat but the crows chase him away anyways, maybe just for sport. whenever i come across an old bird book i’ll flip through it to the crow section. i found an old 1940 copy of our bird friends and foes when i was working at the used book store and it had this picture of a crow attacking an owl: my chickens are lucky that they have the crows living above them, especially in the winter when the canopy of trees is bare and they are sitting ducks. the second the flock hears a warning call they all take off for little rocky nooks, into the woodshed or under the eaves. can you spot max hanging out with the chickens in the front yard? i wish he could protect them but i think a hawk might scoop him up just as easily. i love crows and ravens. they are very much my spirit animal. my friend dwayne took of a raven welcoming him to alaska last year: dwayne parton in instagram crows have a very strong attraction to trinkets which makes me think of all my found object collections: “either as pets or in the wild state they have a peculiar habit of gathering and hoarding bright objects, these seeming to have a strong appeal to them. they will steal the bright toys of children, glass bottle stoppers, spoons, and other shiny objects, and store them away .wild crows have been seen even to dig garnets out of soft stone for their hoards, to visit camping places for bits of tin, to forage regularly for treasures they may store away.” -our bird friends and foes, william atherton dupuy, 1940 sienna and i love this book sad animal facts: so many people think that crows are a bad omen but i think they are just misunderstood (just like the turkey vultures i’m obsessed with) the 1940 bird book i referenced above had an interesting study the biological survey did in the early 1900’s. the government wanted to see if crows were a friend or a foe to humans, in terms of what they ate. for five years, thousands of crows were collected from all over the united states, from all different seasons, and the contents of their stomachs were studied. i loved the cross-section of what they found…it shows the great and subtle balance of nature: “it was found that corn is the staff of life of the crow. it eats more corn than anything else. it eats is at planting time which is a great annoyance to the farmer, but the harm it does can be mended by replanting. it eats it at the roasting ear stage, causing must to spoil that it does not devour. it steals corn form the shock. it eats much corn that is left in the field and otherwise wasters. it is guilting of material injury to the corn crop. in places this amounts to destruction. but just here was found some important evidence for the defense. in the stomachs of these crows were found many insects. they eat many may beetles and the white grubs from which they grow, and these are crop destroyers. they eat great quantities of grasshoppers and there is always a race between grasshoppers and grass to see which will survive. caterpillars are the great leaf eaters, and ti as found that these mushy fellows were a favorite baby food of the crows. they feed their youngsters great quantities of them. every little crow east three times its weight in caterpillars during the time it is in the next. thus the question arises as to whether the insect eating of the crow does not do the farmer as much good as its corn stealing does harm it is estimated that it probably does, but unfortunately, while the benefits are general, the losses all fall on the corn farmer. corn farmers are justified in idling crows by gun or poison wherever they can. the stomachs showed that crows occasionally eat eggs and chicks from the barn yard. they do eat the eggs and young of song birds, birds that are themselves insect eaters. this is a loss to man. set over against this is the fact, proven by the stomachs, that the crow is an enemy pf rodents, eats many small mice and rats, and many young rabbits. here, again, is a service to man, for the rodents do much damage. after reading all of that i was curious to see if the book considered the hawk a friend or foe. turns out all hawks and eagles are considered friends…except for my hawk: “the three villain hawks that deserve death are the cooper hawk, the goshawk, and the sharp-shinned hawk. these the farmer should shoot on sight. they are active, swift-flying hawks, that hang about the woodlands, hide themselves in the thick branches, dart forth with great speed, and seize the small chickens. the habits are different thfrom those of the hawks of the open. they are sly. they work under cover.” hawks weren’t added to the migratory bird treaty act until 1972, thirty-two years after the book was written. i couldn’t shoot a bird anyway even if it was trying to eat my chickens. ***** about that spirit animal thing….when i was sick years back there were always two huge ravens that hung around my bedroom window. they greeted me in the driveway every time i came home from chemotherapy. they were at least 18 inches tall and had this funny little skip and bounce. i could hear them during the afternoon on the flat roof above my bed. when i finally had the strength to go up on the roof again i found that they’d collected rocks, pebbles, nut shells and other odds and ends up there. that’s when i first took an interest in them. crows are supposed to be an omen of change, they are a reminder to let go of old thinking and be willing to embrace new ways of looking at the world. i can’t think of a better messenger. i’ve learned so much from the way of animal medicine…seeing an animal, finding a feather or footprint in my path is always a reminder of something. it’s definitely how i’ve stayed grounded and open to uncertainty the past few years. it’s all so interesting and healing at the same time. this is from a favorite book of mine: [animal medicine] is anything that improves one’s connection to the great mystery and to all life. this would include the healing of body, mind, and of spirit. this medicine is also anything that brings personal power, strength, and understanding. our fellow creatures, the animals, exhibit patterns that will relay these message of healing to anyone astute enough to observe their lessons on how to live. the precious gifts of true medicine are free. each lesson is based on one major idea or concept and, for the sake of simplicity, each animal has been assigned one of these lessons. in reality, each animal in creation has hundreds of lessons to impart, and all of those lessons are powers that can be called upon. – medicine cards: the discovery of power through the ways of animals filed under: chickens inspiring books for girls about extraordinary women february 9, 2017 by ashley hackshaw 2 comments sienna turned ten years old this week. the past few weeks i’ve been asking her what she wanted for her birthday and she would never give me an answer. she’s been reading a lot about harriet tubman recently (she’s delivering her lines in the school production coming up), so i painted her this little painting and quote: i also got her this book: dk biography of harriet tubman “loaded with archival photographs and amazing facts, the dk biography series introduces young readers to some of history’s most interesting and influential characters. dk biography: harriet tubman tells the story of the famous abolitionist, from her childhood as a slave on a maryland plantation, to her dramatic escape, to her tireless work as an organizer of the underground railroad.” we love all the dk series books because of the historical photos and artifacts that they always mix in. i grew up on them. i still remember every single page of seashells. i was mesmerized by the artwork and beautiful words right away when i picked up this book in the bookstore in the black history month section: freedom over me: eleven slaves, their lives and dreams brought to life by ashley bryan “in his gentle yet deeply powerful way, ashley bryan goes to the heart of how a slave is given a monetary value by the slave owner, tempering this with the one thing that can’t be bought or sold—dreams. inspired by the actual will of a plantation owner that lists the worth of each and every one of his “workers”, bryan has created collages around that document, and others like it. through fierce paintings and expansive poetry he imagines and interprets each person’s life on the plantation, as well as the life their owner knew nothing about—their dreams and pride in knowing that they were worth far more than an overseer or madam ever would guess. visually epic, and never before done, this stunning picture book is unlike anything you’ve seen.” the author used original slave auction and plantation estate documents to help illustrate the stories: i grew up in a household of books and that’s what i want for sienna. we are one book away from being a full, functioning county library. here’s what else i picked up for her read: this is one of the most beautiful books i’ve ever come across…and one i hope she’ll keep forever: good night stories for rebel girls: 100 tales of extraordinary women “a children’s book packed with 100 bedtime stories about the life of 100 extraordinary women from the past and the present, illustrated by 60 female artists from all over the world. each woman’s story is written in the style of a fairy tale. each story has a full page, full color portrait that captures the spirit of the portrayed hero. good night stories for rebel girls is also the most crowd funded original book in history.” i think i’ve had more fun reading this book than she has. the pages are just beautiful: this women in science book is a work of art as well: women in science: 50 fearless pioneers who changed the world by rachel ignotofsky “women in science highlights the contributions of fifty notable women to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics from the ancient to the modern world. full of striking, singular art, this fascinating collection also contains infographics about relevant topics such as lab equipment, rates of women currently working in stem fields, and an illustrated scientific glossary. the trailblazing women profiled include well-known figures like primatologist jane goodall, as well as lesser-known pioneers such as katherine johnson, the african-american physicist and mathematician who calculated the trajectory of the 1969 apollo 11 mission to the moon.” here is an example of some of the amazing illustrations: i love the collage art in this girls think of everything book as a way to illustrate these women and their ingenious inventions. i secretly want to be an inventor…i just don’t want to do all the work that comes along with it…but i do like coming up with new ideas: girls think of everything: stories of ingenious inventions by women by catherine thimmesh “in kitchens and living rooms, in garages and labs and basements, even in converted chicken coops, women and girls have invented ingenious innovations that have made our lives simpler and better. their creations are some of the most enduring (the windshield wiper) and best loved (the chocolate chip cookie). what inspired these women, and just how did they turn their ideas into realities?” what i want more than anything for boo to know as she gets older is that she can be an agent of change which is why i picked this book: rad american women a-z by katie schatz “like all a-z books, this one illustrates the alphabet—but instead of “a is for apple”, a is for angela—as in angela davis, the iconic political activist. b is for billie jean king, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; c is for carol burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; d is for dolores huerta, who organized farmworkers; and e is for ella baker, who mentored dr. martin luther king and helped shape the civil rights movement. and the list of great women continues, spanning several centuries, multiple professions, and 26 diverse individuals. there are artists and abolitionists, scientists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble-rousers, and agents of change of all kinds.” i picked up these two books as well because of the young readers’ edition: i am malala: how one girl stood up for education and changed the world “malala yousafzai was only ten years old when the taliban took control of her region. they said music was a crime. they said women weren’t allowed to go to the market. they said girls couldn’t go to school. raised in a once-peaceful area of pakistan transformed by terrorism, malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. so she fought for her right to be educated. and on october 9, 2012, she nearly lost her life for the cause: she was shot point-blank while riding the bus on her way home from school. no one expected her to survive. malala’s powerful story will open your eyes to another world and will make you believe in hope, truth, miracles and the possibility that one person — one young person — can inspire change in her community and beyond.” and this one too because i’d love for her to read the story before we go and see the movie: hidden figures (young readers’ edition) by margot lee shetterly “before john glenn orbited the earth, or neil armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space. this book brings to life the stories of dorothy vaughan, mary jackson, katherine johnson, and christine darden, four african-american women who lived through the civil rights era, the space race, the cold war, and the movement for gender equality, and whose work forever changed the face of nasa and the country.” yeah, i know i have a book problem: my friend and i were talking about audible recently and she told me she had cut back because she was missing life. and i said, “but….books are my life.” i’ve never been very good at moderation…of anything. you can find more books i love here. filed under: books the broody bunch – more chicken chronicles february 6, 2017 by ashley hackshaw 11 comments so much drama with our broody chickens. this is twinkle in her nesting box at 9:30 this morning: this is twinkle at 9:32: a video posted by ashley hackshaw (@lilblueboo) on feb 6, 2017 at 7:17am pst oh my gosh was she mad at me. you can almost make out all the bad words she was cackling. i’ve never felt so shamed before….and it got worse as the other chickens gathered around to stare at our confrontation. we’ve had other chickens go broody but none of them have ever raised such a fuss before. some breeds of chickens are more likely to go broody that others…i think it just means they have more of a built-in mothering instinct…which doesn’t make me feel any better about having to remove a broody chicken from a stash of eggs. i’m pretty sure that the term “nesting” comes from broody chickens. they start feathering the nest and will even sit on other chickens’ eggs. if i put an egg next to one of our broody chickens (or even a golf ball!) she’ll look at it for a moment and then use her beak to pull it underneath her. broody is a good thing if you want baby chickens, but we don’t have a rooster, so our broody hens are just sitting on unfertilized eggs….which means they might sit on those eggs forever because they’ll never hatch. some hens won’t even move off the eggs to eat or drink. our barred rock henrietta will often go missing and we finally figured out this last summer that she likes to sneak off into the woods to lay her eggs. the first time she went missing we thought for sure she’d just been snatched up a hawk or maybe a fox. then one day she showed up again! but she was woozy and much thinner than the other chickens, having obviously not eaten or had anything to drink in a few days. she looks under the influence: after i took the above photo henrietta disappeared again! we searched the woods and found her under a holly bush, sitting on about 35 eggs. i had to put her in chicken jail for a few days in order to break her broodiness but it worked. the worst part is that henrietta is not always the nicest chicken…she likes to pick on several of the others. the other chickens were not very happy that she was back. before we found her it had crossed my mind for a moment that maybe the other chickens had colluded against her and done something unspeakable. henrietta hasn’t been broody in a while but she still likes to lay her eggs out in the woods. if i lock the chickens up in the morning and then let them out about lunchtime, henrietta will unknowingly lead me right to her new laying spot. she runs out in a frantic hurried manner and heads straight for the woods. i run behind her, hiding behind trees and bushes as i go so she doesn’t notice she’s being followed. once i find her spot i can go back and collect her eggs when she’s not there. i always leave one behind so she will keep laying in the same place. rey is another one of our broody-leaning hens…but whenever she’s broody she gets so lethargic that i panic that she’s dying. the first time it happened i thought for sure she was egg bound because i could feel an egg in her abdomen. if a hen is egg-bound…egg production doesn’t stop…so you can imagine how that will turn out if something isn’t done. i gave her a long epsom salt bath and massaged her belly for a while. she only growled at me once. then i put rey in her own dark little room with food and water and a soft bed, hoping she would relax enough that the egg would come out. and it did….but it was just a normal sized egg and she acted like it was no big deal. turned out she wasn’t egg-bound at all….just drunk with egg love. she was back to normal the next day after she had some cool air on her belly: filed under: chicken chronicles, chickens painting a day – week 4 – 365 project progress february 2, 2017 by ashley hackshaw 8 comments progress on my 365 project of daily creativity – all the asks me what i want for a gift i’m usually at a loss for words because i don’t really ever want or need anything. of course books and art supplies are always welcome gifts but usually i am already in great supply of those two. i told him two things: a pig and a metal detector. we really don’t have a place to keep a pig at the moment (maybe one day?). all my treks on the dry lake bed and on the banks of the river made me start thinking about a metal detector…how fun it would be to have one. opening christmas presents i was sure that i wasn’t getting anything…i mean a good metal detector costs about $150 or more and brett and i both are pretty thrifty. just as a joke every tiny gift i opened i would shake before hand and say, “i bet this is my metal detector!” i opened one gift and it was a pig! a stuffed pig. brett kept saying he was sorry he didn’t get me anything except a stuffed pig. and then we were done. later in the day my brother came over and handed me a large box. and guess what it was…. turns out brett had conspired to get the metal detector sent to my brother’s house so it would be a complete surprise. it worked because i was totally surprised! on christmas day my sister and i dug up her backyard looking for things. when we finally got a loud beep my brother dug down into the earth and pulled out something metal. you would have thought we’d discovered a lost galleon of treasure at our reaction. it turned out to be the end of an old hose…but we still considered it treasure because we’d found it under the earth! i’ve only used the metal detector once since then…it turns out i’m only a fair weather metal detectorist. it’s been so cold and rainy that i haven’t had a chance to really get out there and use it. but the day that i did use it i found a few things. here’s what i’ve found so far: nothing of material value but i think it’s all awesome. i’ll just keep saving it all and maybe i can make something interesting out it one day. i always joke to my friends that one day i’m going to open up a small oddity museum for all of my random found objects. i might just do that one day. these are things that i found on the lake bed just walking around…so imagine what might lie under the surface: i keep all the cool glass finds separate: this was another found object collage from the end of 2016: the “jesus loves u” pin was clipped to my handbag one day when i wasn’t looking. i don’t know if that’s creepy or neat. the little doll face was given to me by someone else who found it. still technically found. i love the randomness of it all. so one day maybe i’ll be a little eccentric old lady piddling around her cases of eccentric oddities. so, would any of you ever come visit my oddity museum? filed under: found objects 1 2 3 … 182
