are they candidates that can win marginal districts? what people or groups in the political realm are creating databases of people likely to be affected by obamacare repeal for political mobilization? what is the message? let me take a stab at the last one. midterm elections are not for president but they are almost always about the president. one doesn’t need to support the opposition party to want to put some brake on an unpopular or unpredictable president. putting a check on president trump’s power will be a powerful mid-term message as long as he’s under 50% approval and a very powerful message if he stays under 40%, which seems much more likely. put me down as a gravity believer. i think the white house and the entire gop are setting themselves up for a 2018 reckoning. but it won’t happen automatically. it requires activation of the democratic base, which is already happening with dramatic speed. just as much it requires cutting into the non-big city territories with specific messages which divide trump from his voters or potential voters. a big chunk of trump’s voters voted for him in spite of their dislike. those people can be carved away. so, how? and where? source: tpm kc | february 3, 2017february 3, 2017 | no comments one random post from the archives: height/weight norms for kids has anyone ever had or known a kid who fell under the 50% mark for height or weight when under 3 or 4 years old? my two kids were in the high 90s when very small, and discussing this with family all our kids were like that. we don’t know anyone who was under the midpoint. is that chart normalized for the early 1900s or something? i wonder if the statistics are skewed since all babies have tended to be bigger (and smarter) than they were a few generations ago, primarily to good nutrition and, sadly, even an abundance of calories. a google search for “height/weight chart” +infants doesn’t help much. kc | november 19, 2005january 29, 2008 | 1 comment one random post from the archives: medical googling — what’s the problem? dr. google is in the news. according to the pew research center, 8 million people a day go online looking for health information. more than two-thirds start by typing their medical question into a search engine such as google. in milliseconds, they’ll be prescribed millions of web sites. but user beware. finding quality is different story. medical googling and a pushback to it from one doctor has been making the news. one columnist went so far to call the doctor a pompous ass. can a patient ever show up at the doctor’s office with too much information? a doctor’s essay about medical “googlers” — patients who research their symptoms, illness and doctors on the web before seeking treatment — suggests they can. the report, which appeared in time magazine, was written by dr. scott haig, an assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at columbia university college of physicians and surgeons. i agree that this particular woman was a ‘brainsucker.’ she’d already made an appointment with yet another doctor to whom, coincidentally, the author was going to refer the woman. susan had neither the trust of a nurse nor the teachability of an engineer. she would ignore no theory of any culture or any quack, regarding her very common brand of knee pain. ignore no theory! if someone really doesn’t see anyone as an expert, they indeed would be a hard patient to treat. there’s clearly nothing wrong with a patient researching doctors online as best they can. it helps that they know their own limitations. some don’t: my own particular pet peeve is the patient who can’t describe his symptoms in layman’s terms but feels compelled to misuse medical terminology in a misguided attempt to help me understand his problems better. some doctors aren’t “up” on all the latest news, and others are good generalists but can’t possibly know all the odd variants of a disease without doing some investigation. amy tan had lyme disease and didn’t get a correct diagnosis for a long time because her symptoms didn’t fit the “pattern.” however, a guy recently found a 40-year-old article describing his painful headache that eluded correct diagnosis from most of 60 doctors. there on microfiche they found the 1963 article in the british journal of laryngology & otology. “he was very persistent,” said malekzadeh, an assistant professor of otolaryngology at georgetown university who has co-written a paper about the case that has been submitted to a medical journal. “without his help, i doubt we would have gotten to the end of it,” in part because his problem was so uncommon. doctors need informed and persistent patients. they do not need patients (or parents of patients) who regularly argue with a doctor and second-guess their expertise. doctors can be sometimes wrong and quacks sometimes right, but that doesn’t put everybody on equal footing, even with google helping sift some needles out of haystacks. kc | november 19, 2007january 20, 2008 trump’s america, where even park employees have become enemies of the state | opinion | the guardian the fact that trump targeted the parks is significant in that it displays total disregard for public opinion. his administration is not even making a pretence of assuaging the public that it is acting in their interest, as even authoritarian states often do. instead, it is acting quickly and brutally, leaving fundamental questions about citizens’ health, safety and national security unanswered. source: trump’s america, where even park employees have become enemies of the state | sarah kendzior | opinion | the guardian kc | january 29, 2017 | no comments despondent democrats are counting on trump to be a loose cannon | geoffrey kabaservice | us news | the guardian despite the democrats’ current plight, the american left still has many advantages. the vast majority of people who work in media, academia, and entertainment are liberal – compare the star power on offer at the women’s march with the handful of washed-up entertainers at trump’s inauguration festivities – which means that the left’s victories in the culture wars are likely to continue. young people continue to flock to the cities and the population continues to become more diverse and better-educated. america really is becoming two nations, and the growth indicators are all on the side of the nation that showed up to the women’s march – an impression strengthened by the much larger crowds than at trump’s inauguration. in the long run, demographics may become destiny if republicans can’t improve their appeal to millennials, minorities, women, urbanites, and college-educated voters. source: despondent democrats are counting on trump to be a loose cannon | geoffrey kabaservice | us news | the guardian kc | january 21, 2017 | no comments posts navigation older posts (note: third parties may be placing and reading cookies on visitors' browsers or using web beacons to collect information as a result of ad serving on this website.)
