is a systematic approach to dumping the harmful ingredients found in fast and processed food and getting back to eating real food.  food that is closer to nature than it is to science.  it’s a great time to  focus on eating delicious and nutrient dense food.  a healthy body has more energy for things that matter most in life. you can join us this week and get caught up by checking out our other weekly challenges on the real food experience challenge page. you can also join our real food experience facebook group and join the conversation going on over there. drink real beverages like many of our other weekly challenges, the level of difficulty this week depends on where you start from.  this week’s challenge is all about drinking real beverages.  if you are used to drinking soda, energy drinks and sports drinks then this is going to be extremely difficult for you.  if your typical drink is water then this week will be quite easy. when i made the change to real food, my family questioned me about everything.  why couldn’t they have this?  why could they no longer eat that? they were willing to change up their favorite meals when i explained to them that i loved them and that i was concerned  about them eating harmful ingredients.  however, when i changed out their favorite drinks for real beverages all i heard were complaints.  “i want something that tastes good.”  “this doesn’t really quench my thirst like this artificially colored and sugar filled drink does.”  ummm………too bad guys.  we are making the change.  the good news……..with time and practice a new normal can be achieved and most (probably not all) of the complaints will go away. the challenge this week is to drink only a select few real beverages: water, milk, coffee, and tea.  i bet i lost most of you there.  if you are still with me, remember that this is a challenge week.  i didn’t say that you can’t drink other beverages ever again. i am asking you to challenge yourself to keep it simple this week. really focus on purging extra sugar, color, and artificial ingredients out of your system.  water is really all we need to drink……..especially kids.  they really don’t need all of the added sugar found in drink pouches, flavored waters,  and juice boxes. i bet if you stopped to calculate how much sugar you drink each day, you would be blown away.  water is good for us in so many ways. let’s work on this extremely important and healthy habit.  most of us just don’t get enough water on a daily basis.  let’s work on fixing that this week. nutrition advice can be confusing because it seems to change so often, but one piece of advice never changes.  water is healthy.  there is no denying that fact. ok…..it’s your turn now.  let’s get to this.  one beverage at a time make the switch from unhealthy to the healthy lifestyle you want and your body craves. what do you think is going to be the most difficult about this week?  do you have to give up soda?  do you think you drink enough water on a regular basis? for simple recipes your family is sure to love make sure you check out my recipe index.  i am adding new recipes all of the time so make sure you check back often.  you will also want to grab this free meal-planning printable calendar to make your meal planning easier.  it has areas to plan your daily activities and your evening meal prep. filed under: real food tagged with: the real food experience challengethe real food experience challenge: intro to gut health february 11, 2017 by christina 1 comment all disease begins in the gut. – hippocrates i’ve told the story of what inspired me to start a real food journey before, but i think it is really important to tell it again to start of this week’s challenge.  it goes something like this……once upon a time there was a woman who loved being active with her children. she cheered them on at their football games, marching band competitions, and dance recitals.  then, one day and for many days after that, she became very ill.  she didn’t have the energy to cheer as loudly as before and often was forced to make unexpected trips to the bathroom with digestive distress.  that woman is me and that is how my real food journey started. my anxiety and distress over being sick is something i will never forget.  i don’t wish it on anyone.  that distress is what lead me to start the first real food experience. there is so much talk about dieting and being ultra thin.  i understand that it is important to be the best you that you can be.  i want that for me and i want that for you. however, i have come to realize that true beauty comes from within.  good health and positive healthy energy is true beauty. when you start studying gut health you discover some amazing things about the human body.  the gut is home to 100 trillion microorganisms. keep your gut healthy and the rest of you will be healthy.  disrupt the balance and it is believed to cause all sorts of issues for our bodies including diabetes, depression, chronic fatigue, bloating, gas, aches, and pains.  ugghhh!  nobody has time for that nonsense. there is still much research that needs to be done on gut health, but there are foods that are generally believed to be good for our guts and help promote a healthy immune system.  there are also elements of our modern lifestyle that are generally believed to lead to unhealthy guts.  as always, i remind you to do your own research and make an informed decision for you and your family. this week’s challenge is two-part.  we are going to work on increasing the healthy and decreasing the unhealthy.  ok………that makes sense……..but now you are thinking, “what exactly do you mean, christina?” let’s make things super easy. unhealthy for the gut (things to avoid) antibiotics and their friend chronic infections chronic stress diets low in fermented foods diets high in carbohydrates, sugar, and processed foods healthy for the gut (things to include) take steps to manage stress. eat foods rich in fermentable fibers like sweet potatoes, yams, and yucca. eat fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut, kim chi, and yogurt. eat dark chocolate with at least 70% cacao. ok……now let’s get to this.  i know some of these things are out of your control.  i get it.  your life is over-the-top stressful right now and chronic infections are not really something you have much control over either.  however, there are ways you can work to reduce your stress and you can certainly take control over the foods that you put in your mouth.  try some new fermented foods or bring back some of your old favorites.  sauerkraut is any easy fermented food to start with.  some yogurts have more probiotics than others……..keep your eye out for those while shopping at the store.  make sure you are reading labels and avoiding hidden sugar.  you can read here for more on the many different names for sugar that you will find on your packaged foods.  if you haven’t already, make sure you make the switch to whole grains and drop the refined flour.  you can find tips to help you with buying whole grains at the grocery store here. you can do this! let’s get going on improving our gut health today.  leave me a comment below and we can get the discussion started.  do you have a favorite fermented food?  are there any new foods you are excited to try?  what are some of the ways you keep your stress in check?   i would love for you to subscribe by email and follow me on social media. if you would like to join us in our special real food experience challenge february 7, 2017 by christina 1 comment let’s face it.  many of us are stubborn.  we don’t want anyone telling us how to eat and we especially don’t want anyone telling us how to feed our families………..even when it’s good advice. no way!  no how!  mind your own business!  that was my mindset when i discovered two powerful films about food.  i’m a redhead.  we are known for our stubbornness.  my mother is shaking her head in agreement right now.  netflix is a great way to spend time relaxing…….. binge watching your favorite show, munching on popcorn, and unwinding from a long week.  most of us think of netflix as a place to go for entertainment.  i was surprised to find educational films on netflix as well.  these two films are not new, but they literally changed my life.  with tears streaming down my face and a little anger in my heart, i decided that i needed to know more.  these films inspired me to look at food sourcing and nutrition in a whole different way.     these movies will change your mind about real food click to tweet food inc    quoting the website, “in food, inc., filmmaker robert kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the american consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, usda and fda. our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the american farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. we have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of e. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 americans annually. we are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.”  find more about the movie here.  fed up  the fedup website tells us, “everything we’ve been told about food and exercise for the past 30 years is dead wrong. fed up is the film the food industry doesn’t want you to see. from katie couric, laurie david (oscar winning producer of an inconvenient truth) and director stephanie soechtig, fed up will change the way you eat forever.”  find out more about the movie here.  these movies are so good!  many people attribute their change in eating to these powerful films.  go ahead and spend a few hours watching these movies.  you can gather information that will help you make up your own mind about real food.  you’ll be shocked, amazed, and maybe even a little bit confused. i’m not here to tell you how to eat and how to feed your family, but if you want help.  i’m here.  i’ve been through the ups and downs of a real food journey.  it’s not easy, but with the right support and guidance it is possible to live a real food lifestyle even when your family is crazy busy.  check out the real food experience challenges and facebook group to get started.   when you are done watching these films, let me know what you think.  what affect do they have on you?  what movies would you add to this list?  if you don’t have netflix or can’t find them there for some reason, you can also purchase them through amazon using my affiliate links. filed under: real food tagged with: inspiration for change, real food basics, real food inspirationthe real food experience challenge: ditch artificial food dyes february 3, 2017 by christina leave a comment congratulations you have made it to another week of the real food experience challenges.  we are halfway through our real food journey together.  we started out our real food experience getting our kitchens organized for our journey.  we then went on the making sure to plan to eat at least two fruits or vegetables with each meal.  all of the nutrients that we are loading up on are really making us fell great now. last week we made the switch from highly processed white flours and rice to eating whole grains.  we challenged you to try some new grains too. there are so many delicious grains available.  it’s easy to discover a new favorite.  last week, we tried eating foods made with natural sweeteners in an attempt to reduce our overall sugar consumption.  now it’s time to start making some cuts from our diet.  up until now, we really were just adding to our nutrition base.  this is the first week we start talking about harmful food additives.  this week may be a bigger challenge for many of you. if you are new to the real food experience, you can start with us at the beginning of the challenge weeks or join us this week and then go back and make up the other weeks later. there is lots more conversation going on in our real food experience facebook group so come on over and join us there.  don’t be shy.  we can’t wait to hear from you. ditch artificially colored foods why would we want to cut out artificial colors from our diet?  great question!  the easy answer is because artificial food dyes are not real food.  their only purpose is to make our food “prettier.” artificial colors are made from petroleum, contaminants and propylene glycol.  i’m sure you have heard of petroleum.  you may not know what propylene glycol is though.  it is the stuff that antifreeze is made of and we all know we are not supposed to drink antifreeze.  however, this is exactly what artificial colors are made of.  when i talk about artificial colors, i am talking about food dyes including, but not limited to yellow 5 and red 40.  you will see the food dyes listed on most packaged foods. dump artificial food dyes for better health. #rfechallenge click to tweet you might be asking yourself, “doesn’t our government only approve ingredients for our food that won’t harm us?” you would think so, but that is not the case in the united states right now.  the fda has in the fast approved food dyes that have since been banned and they still allow many food dyes that are banned in other countries.  many of our favorite brands already have the recipes to make our favorite foods without artificial colors in the uk where they are banned. however, they are still using these harmful ingredients in the us recipes.  how are artificial colors harmful?  for the sake of this challenge, i will list the three reasons that concern me the most.  as always, i ask that you do your own research and make the decision that is right for your family. cancer – yes, i said it.  the word i hate the most in this world.  the word that has caused so many people i love heartache………. cancer.  food dyes have been linked to cancer.  in a story from 2010 food safety news reports on a study that shows an “inherent risk” in 9 commonly used food dyes.  three of the dyes carry known carcinogens.  seven of them have been shown to contribute to cancer.  it’s just crazy to me!  food companies know that these dyes cause cancer and they still want us to feed it to our families.  i readily admit that i am especially sensitive when it comes to discussing cancer.  i choose to avoid ingredients like food dyes that show a link to cancer.  it’s just not worth it to me! adhd-like behavior –  there have been recent studies that show that some children’s behavior is affected by food dyes.  the result is adhd-like behavior.  can you imagine?  the food you feed your children can create hyperactivity and affect their ability to learn.  why would we even want to take the chance?  this behavior change is something i have actually observed in my own family.  it was not obvious when we were eating artificial colors all of the time, but now that i’ve purged them from my family, i can tell when my youngest has eaten food dye.  i’ll pick him up from school and he will be really wound up and clearly unable to focus on what i am saying to him.  i have to refocus him several times through one conversation.  when i notice this change in behavior, i ask him what he ate that day and without fail…………he’s eaten a cupcake or cookie, or other colorful item brought in for a birthday party or other special event.  a food item that is loaded with artificial food dyes.  i’m no scientist. i’m just a mom, but i can tell you through my observation that the effects of food dye seem to linger long after my child has burned through the sugar. food dyes are deceptive –  i can’t tell you how many times that i thought i was eating food when i really wasn’t.  my favorite example is the cereal bars that i fed to my family each morning before i knew better.  i thought i was feeding them fruit and grains.  come to find out………..the fruit is really high fructose corn syrup and food dye.  certainly, not the nutrition that i want to be feeding them. you can read more on this subject in this article i wrote. now it’s your turn………go out into the world and choose foods that don’t include artificial colors.  you will probably have to do a lot of label reading. you will be surprised at all of the crazy places you find artificial food dyes.  keep eating your fruit and vegetables and whole grains too. you are making changes that will lead to better long-term health for your family. what are you finding to be the hardest part of transitioning to a real food diet?  what is the craziest place you have found artificial food dyes?  have you noticed any behavior changes in your children due to food dyes? i promise to keep bringing you the best and most accurate information on nutrition i can find……….and hopefully with a little bit of humor along the way as well. you can find lots of great information on this blog (check out the tabs above and the archives). you can follow what others are doing for the real food experience
