haters january 17, 2017 by christina 1 comment if you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my rss feed. thanks for visiting!eat your veggies!  we all know that is good advice.  in fact, this week’s real food experience challenge is devoted to eating more fruit and veggies.  what happens when you or a family member really don’t like to eat vegetables?  i have a few of “those people” in my family.  my non-veggie eating kids are bad……..really bad.  they choke, gag, complain, and walk away from food completely rather than eat a vegetable.  it drives me crazy.  i’ve done my own research on nutrition and have decided that what is best for my family is that we eat real food.  food that is as close to nature as possible.  we are trying to cut out processed foods.  i don’t want to feed my family blueberry cereal bars that don’t contain any blueberries.  real life advice for veggie haters i’ve read just about all of the “get your kids to eat vegetables” advice out there.  most of it is the same ideas over and over.  some of it works and some of it doesn’t help me one bit.  my least favorite bit of advice comes in a few different versions.  in short, make your child take a small bite.  i would love to do that because i know over time that most people will learn to like or at least tolerate vegetables.  i tried this tactic with my kids and ended up feeling like a complete failure.  instead of kids who love vegetables, i ended up with gagging kids at my dinner table.  this does not make for a pleasant experience! don't fight the dip and other real life advice for feeding veggie haters. click to tweet should you just give up on feeding your non-veggie loving family members good nutritious vegetables?  certainly not!  today, i am sharing some of the tips that work in my family.  i encourage you to try some of these tips and stick with what works for your family.  everyone is different………especially when it comes to eating.  the important takeaway from this is simple.  don’t give up!  your family’s health is important and it’s up to you to help them get the nutrition they need to grow and fight disease.  don’t start a ruckus!  as hard as it may be, don’t make comments on what they are eating.  veggie haters are stubborn.  most will not eat vegetables just because they know it drives you crazy.  keep the dinner table relaxed and enjoyable for all.  be a good example.  if you want your family to eat vegetables, you need to eat them too.  you don’t have to love them all, just make sure to not make disparaging remarks about certain vegetables.  allow your family to form their own opinion.  i know i was quite surprised to find out as an adult that i liked to eat cooked carrots.  i grew up thinking i didn’t like them.  i’m pretty sure that has something to do with my mom not liking to eat carrots that were cooked.  sorry mom!  you are perfect in every other way.  don’t fight the dip!  i have been amazed over the years at how much more vegetables my family will eat if they can dip it in ranch dressing or (gasp) ketchup.  i don’t love all of the dipping, but at least they are eating the vegetables. that’s progress.  you might also try a hummus dip, salsa, or yogurt based dip.  don’t serve ugly vegetables.  color matters.  texture matters.  do your best to serve colorful vegetables that are prepared well.  mushy blobs of nasty looking vegetables are not the way to win over veggie haters.  prepare vegetables in different ways. find the way that your family likes to eat vegetables.  don’t force roasted cauliflower on your family if they prefer to eat it raw.  try raw, roasted, boiled, and grilled.  fresh, frozen, and canned are all options.  try veggies with butter, with a sauce, with cheese, with a dip, with different spices or plain.  your family may surprise you with what they like.  my son won’t eat green beans unless they are french cut green beans.  hide the veggies.   i really prefer that my family knows what they are eating, but desperate times call for desperate measures.  a delicious smoothie is a great place to hide almost any fruit or vegetable.  i blend onions till smooth for some of my recipes.  we get the nutrition and flavor, but nobody can pick them out.  shredded carrots ad an amazing sweetness to beef.  i like to add shredded carrots to my meatloaf.  spaghetti sauces and soups are some of my other favorite vegetable hiding places. good luck with this week’s challenge.  i would love to see your progress.  share food label pictures and questions in the facebook group and if you are on twitter or instagram use #rfechallenge.  your pictures will certainly help and encourage us all to make healthier changes for our families.  please leave me a comment below if you have any questions or want to share your progress with us.  i would also love to hear how you deal with your veggie haters.  what are your favorite recipes to hide veggies?  i can’t wait to hear from you! make sure you food experience challengethe real food experience challenge: eat 2 fruits or vegetables at each meal january 13, 2017 by christina 2 comments welcome back everyone!  i hope you enjoyed the first week of the real food experience challenge.  if you missed the first week, you can get caught up with us by clicking over to  challenge one here.  we spent the week getting organized and ready to go for our weekly eating challenges.  if you follow along and really put in the effort you will be well on the way to your own real food journey.  step by step gets you there.  this is exactly the approach that i took with my own family and i have found that my family was much more willing to accept changes to what they ate when i switched things out week by week.  each week builds on the next and in the end you will discover that you are eating more nutrients dense foods and less chemical, sugar, and salt laden processed foods.   eat 2 servings of fruit or vegetables at each meal   yes, that’s right.  this week is all about eating more.  more fruit and vegetables.  organic, conventional, fresh, frozen, dried or canned………  i don’t care. just eat it.  the foundation of a real food lifestyle is filling your body with lots of nutrition.  there is a whole rainbow of fruit and vegetables to choose from. each color brings its own list of beneficial nutrients.  nutrients are what helps your body to feel great and fight disease.   this week's challege is all about eating more. more fruit and vegetables. organic,… click to tweet   eat more.  how can that be a challenge?  well……..if you are like most of us in the united states who eat the standard american diet (sad), you probably don’t eat two servings of fruit or vegetables in a day.  and now i’m asking you to eat two for every meal.  by the end of each day, you should have eaten 6 servings of fruit and vegetables.  this begins the transition to a more plant-based diet.  i’m not saying you need to go all out vegetarian, but the more plants you eat……..the better you will feel.   i have always found fruit to be a good way to deal with sugar cravings.  sugar is an addiction that is difficult for me and many other moms i know to break.  fruit has plenty of its own sugar, but it is natural sugar and fruit has lots of other nutrition benefits.  one of these health benefits is that fruits and vegetables contain fiber. fiber makes your belly feel fuller and if you feel fuller, you are less likely to try to fill up on junk food.  fiber is also the key to the oh-so-glamorous world of the  properly functioning digestive system.  constipation is a real problem for a lot of children that can be easily fixed by eating more whole fruits and vegetables.    a few tips before i go and you get started on the challenge.  i realize that not everybody loves fruit and vegetables.  my little guy has got to be one of the pickiest eaters i know and i still find ways to get fruit and vegetables into his body.  smoothies are a great way to include a ton of nutrition into one delicious cup.  we like to make pancakes with a banana as the sweetener and then top with fried apples. so good!  another of my favorite tricks is to shred carrots and include them in my meatloaf.  soups and pasta sauces are great ways to pile on the nutrition.  and this may sound silly, but don’t forget about onions.  onions taste great in eggs, soups, sauces…………just about anything.  just make sure you make them really small so your onion-hating family members can’t find them and pick them out.   well……….there you go.  time to get started.  have a truly delicious week.  fill your body with lots of health-enhancing nutrition.  start talking with your children about nutrition and why it is good to eat a variety of foods.  have a contest and see who can come up with the meal that has the most different fruits or vegetables in it.  i can’t wait to hear what you come up with.  we can’t wait to see your progress.  share pictures of your meals over on the facebook group and if you are on twitter or instagram use #rfechallenge.  your pictures will certainly help and encourage us all to make healthier changes for our families. please leave me a comment below if you have any questions or want to share your progress with us. we are all into this together!   if you are interested in reading my back story of illness to health, click processed foods january 11, 2017 by christina leave a comment this is a big week.  the week you and your family begin your transition from fast and processed food to real food. you’ve been wanting to make this change for a while, but you just haven’t been sure where to start.  it can be really overwhelming.  i remember the confusion well.  it was just a few years ago that i was buried under information and indecision.  today, we dig a bit deeper into some common food buzz words that you see on food packaging.  we start our discussion with why you need to beware of the terms “sugar free” and “fat free.”  why you should beware of the terms fat free and sugar free. there is always more to the story. click to tweet fat free if you were around in the 80s and 90s you likely try to avoid fat at all costs.  we were taught that fat is a dietary evil.  recent research has shown that fat isn’t as bad as we were once lead to believe.  according to the diabetic connect website, “there are good fats and bad fats. avocados for instance have good fats, but deep fried foods — not so much.”  sugar has been found to be the real problem.  fat free foods are often loaded with lots of sugar.  they need something to make them taste good so that you buy them over and over.  low fat, but high calorie foods are not the answer.  look for foods that are naturally low in fat and even healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and even butter.  sugar free “sugar free” sounds healthy right?  it sure is if we are talking about foods that naturally do not contain sugar.  foods like non-starchy vegetables (cucumbers and celery), whole grains, and beans.  according to livestrong.com, ” currently, there is no differentiation between natural and added sugars on a food label. by july 2018, all food labels will be more clear and list the amount of added sugars along with total sugars. until then, to limit added sugars, check ingredient labels.”  the other issue is that sugar free foods often pull out the sugar and add in the artificial sweeteners.  there is mixed research on the safeness of artificial sweeteners.  many have only been on the market for 10-20 years.  it’s hard to know the long-term health affects.  until all of that is sorted out, avoiding artificial sweeteners seems like a good idea when you are wanting to eat a traditional real food diet.  according to the university of california, san francisco’s diabetes education online, “some foods made with artificial sweeteners may have more calories or fat than the original sugar-sweetened product. this may be the case with desserts and baked goods. read food labels to compare products for serving sizes, calories and fat. choosing a smaller portion of a sugar-sweetened product may be lower in calories than the artificially sweetened version!” good luck with this week’s challenge.  i would love to see your progress.  share food label pictures and questions in the facebook group and if you are on twitter or instagram use #rfechallenge.  your pictures will certainly help and encourage us all to make healthier changes for our families.  please leave me a comment below if you have any questions or want to experience challenge week 1: let’s get organized january 5, 2017 by christina 2 comments joining the real food experience challenge is one of the best and easiest ways to learn to eat a healthier real food diet. with just a little bit of practice, it becomes a lifestyle that will stick for good.  you are definitely not alone.  there will be lots of help and support over at our real food experience this time. week 1 challenge: this week is our week to get organized and begin your food education.  after the holidays my kitchen is a mess and i’ll be getting organized right along side of you.  if you don’t cook on a regular basis, your kitchen is going to be going through some big changes. this week’s challenge has 3 parts: kitchen clean-out it’s time to toss out or donate all of the processed food both in the cupboards and the refrigerator.  if you think it’s not healthy, then it’s probably not.  look for ingredients that you are not familiar with and ingredients that you can’t even pronounce.  those are usually no good!  you will also want to toss out all of the holiday leftovers.  they are old now. there is no reason to keep that tiny piece of leftover turkey.  you are going to want to make room for lots of real healthy food.  give the sink and counters a good scrub down, wipe down the cabinets, and organize your pots, pans, and cooking utensils. grocery store research you are going to be changing the way you shop if you have been primarily buying processed food.  look at your local grocery stores and find out where you can do the bulk of your real food shopping.  are there stores in your area that carry bulk grains or stores that carry a wide variety of organic produce?  which store in town has the best prices on organic foods?  my husband and i realized that one of our favorite stores for organic produce only carries “natural” tomato sauce in a can.  the other store in town (with less organic produce) actually carries more canned organic items.  keep in mind that you will now be shopping primarily the perimeter of the store.  there is no reason for you to dive into the processed food middle anymore.  make some notes to make your meal planning easier. label reading 101 start reading labels.  not the front of the package, but the back of the package.  look at ingredients. a rule i like to use is that if a packaged product has more than 5 ingredients, i usually don’t buy it.  i try to avoid products that are full of ingredients that i don’t have at home to cook with and ingredients that i can’t pronounce. there you go……..a quick overview of this week’s challenge.  there is plenty to do no matter where you are on your real food journey.  i’ll be back later during the challenge week with more information to help you with each of these challenges.   good luck with this week’s challenge.  i would love to see your progress.  share before and after pictures in the facebook group and if you are on twitter or instagram use #rfechallenge.  your pictures will certainly help and encourage us all to make healthier changes for our families.  please leave me a comment below if you have any questions or want to share your progress with us.  i can’t wait to hear from you! filed under: real food tagged with: the real food experience challengetoo many holiday cookies? here’s what to do about it. january 4, 2017 by
