its permaculture directory | rss menu skip to content home resources contact home a permacultural future as human beings we love to brag about being the planet earth’s most intelligent species. while homo sapiens are the most inventive creatures in the known universe, some of the things we do can hardly be classified as intelligent. for instance, we’re the only creatures in the world that hold our only inhabitable planet in such low regard. fortunately, the younger generation seems to recognize the importance of striking a balance between modern life and environmental responsibility. what is permaculture this is a long word with a very important definition. permaculture doesn’t rally refer to a single particular thing, but a better way of doing all things. for example, keeping livestock in ways that contribute to overall sustainability of farmland, and keeping them same with fencing supplies. in the industrial revolution, people threw caution to the wind for the advancement of the species. fortunately, smog producing factories and irresponsible manufacturing practices of the past are now viewed in a negative light. permaculture addresses these issues without slowing progress. the term essentially refers to a way to create self sustaining methods for producing the modern amenities we all enjoy. from architecture to manufacturing, nearly every aspect of western civilization can be made more environmentally friendly by following the practices of permaculture. even modern agriculture practices are actually harming the earth, but permaculture can address this. the dangers of modern agriculture there were plants and trees on the planet — living and thriving — for millions of years before mans arrival. yet in still, people feel as though the plants we eat now need a lot of assistance to do what they do best. pesticides and fertilizer are excellent for improving crop harvests, but they also do serious damage to the environment. pesticides are poisons which accumulate in the ground water and within the people who consume them. fertilizer may seem like it’s good for plants and the environment, but it’s not. the great barrier reef in australia — one of the world’s most important habitats — is being consumed by an abnormal number of sea stars (star fish). these creatures are overwhelming the reef, because the run off of fertilizer is also fertilizing them when they’re in a planktonic state. permaculture introduces methods of creating self sustaining agriculture so people don’t have to interfere. more responsible architecture permacultural architecture addresses current construction practices which negatively impact the earth. bricks and cinder blocks made from wool and seaweed don’t result in harmful byproducts the way traditional building materials can. buildings and homes can also utilize solar panels instead of drawing power from the electrical grid. insulated windows reduce the need to use the heating and air as often. efficient gutters collect and recycle rain water which reduces the stress on the city’s sewage system. some of these buildings even feature indoor gardens to grow food for the residents. use of an electric fence keeps livestock safe and in areas where they are needed. the next step in becoming more environmentally responsible would be to create a solar powered car. most people believe the rumor that electric and hybrid cars are better for the earth. however, these cars run off of electricity which is produced by burning coal. to truly decrease the carbon footprint, vehicles need to be powered by sunlight and natural gas. recent postspermaculture transformation in 90 daysseeds of permaculture – tropical permaculturepermaculture paradise: val and eli’s garden!permaculture greening the desertgeoff lawton: permaculture & the tipping pointbackyard permaculture: starting at home… its permaculture directory is designed by -->
