register now contact us we are slowly approaching completion. sydney is a beautiful city and it absolutely shines in spring. while i complete the rest of the site, i'll be taking the opportunity to change the header image every few days. these are all images taken with my old samsung a3. i work around the harbour so most will be city or beach shots and hopefully they will convery some of the beauty of my city. the entire body and blog will be replaced over the next week or so and i'll finally be adding some meaningful content. so come back now and then and have a look. better yet, register and i'll let you know by email when things change. 07/11/2016 here we are on the eve (almost) of the scary us elections and the technical aspect of my site is almost done. the contact us page is working and most everything else is done. a list of remaining tasks list is at the right. still to do the contact us page should recognise if a user is logged in and not ask for a password. if the user is not logged in, check the email address is valid and do some kind of captcha to stop spamming. if an unsubscribe is received, delete the user account. all reused code such as headers and forms to go into php include files. blog posts to go into a table for presentation. and last, start adding content. that will be an ongiong task. 04/11/2016 i'm trying to make sure that the rough code which is being put together at the moment can be scaleable. i think its important that common elements like headers footers and common forms can be easily inserted and changed with a php include. i think it's easy to let your coding get away from you and become unruly. just on that, i can't stres enough how important commentary is in your code. i can't count the number of times i have inherited code where there is really zero commentary unless the coder has commented out some existing code. so unhelpful. in years gone, part of the peer review was to check for adequate comments but sadly, that seems to have slipped out of the coding culture. 02/11/2016 alrighty, i now have posts associated with a blog entry. you can make a comment when you log in. functionality for a forgotten password is in place. time to revise a to do list. this doen't include actual content. add a contact us page with the ability to enter some query details. the unsubscribe facility needs to be created. put blog posts in a database table with some information to identify the category so i know where to display them. here's the basic contact us form, i kow it's pretty similar to what's already on this site but that's okay. contact us 27/10/2016 some things really take time. at the end of this post is (if you are logged in) an input to post a comment, getting that just right was a real saga from sizing the button to making a textarea which grows as you type. anyway, it's there and another lesson learnt although i think the button is a touch short. comments of course, the next trick is to identify a comment with its post and display the thing but that's a job for another day. 27/10/2016 so some small progress over the last few days. i've added some stuff to the forgot password button but it isn't complete. also, when you log on succesfully, the login box dissappears and is replaced with a logout button. details of the login are saved to the session and the last login time is recorded. next i'll complete the forgot password page and functionality and put together some insertable code to take and display comments. for that, each blog entry will have a unique id associated with it and that key will reference the commentary for the entry. if the user is logged on, a button will appear which can be pressed to add a new comment. in all cases, the comments for the blog entry will be available. 24/10/2016 now it's time to tackle the login process. the login process checks for valid credentials and then stores the user id to a session variable. other bits of the site can use that to determine if the user is able to leave a comment. while i'm here, i'll make a short list of functionality i still want to put together before i start on the content bit. items for completion in the near future login functionaiity, save the user login and dissappear the login boxes when the user has logged in. logout functionality, the login boxes are replaced by a logout button. handle forgotten logins. leave a comment, if the user is logged in, present a functionality at the end of each entry for the user to comment. show comments and display names for the relevant entries. unsubscribe the user on request. add content and structure to the site.. thats a pretty long list and will keep me busy for a while i think. 22/10/2016 okay, after spending a bit of time getting the whole registration and email response down pat, i have a completed section that accepts and validated input, saves the data to a database and sends and resonse to the proferred email address. i've tried to give tips on the process down the right side for now. the next task will be to save these blog entries to the database. i had thought of using the excellent wordpress engin for this and i might revisit later but i think it's nice to have a look at how to do it yourself, even if it is at a basic lavel. not going to go into the details of moving from plain html to php, bootstrap and ajax but i may put together a tutorial later down the track. i'm finding one of the more difficult things is switching between languages. aside from what i do in my normal day life, working with a few other languages and apis can be challenging especially when looking at code which syntactically is similar but has different libraries and system variables. i currently work in c, java, javscript, sql server, mysql, vb, vba and php and really, at a glance, it all looks pretty similar, but, its the little things which make it a challenge. my original idea was to put together a textual tutorial on making a bootstrap website but i think the reality is that it will be too time-consuming trying to that while working full time at what is a fairly demanding job. i'm even finding it a challenge to manage the small tweaks n the fron page of the site. so, as with all evolving ideas, i'll release my work on youtube and provide source as a downloadable bundle. 15/10/2016 so the modal was easy but i want to give a message if the user enters an invalid email address and maybe some other user error. at the moment, as soon as you press the submit button, the window exits when you go to the php function that validates stuff and when the validate function comes back, the modal is gone. i looked at ways of loading the modal automatically depending on condtions wuch as a pending error message but the results wern't very satisfying. anyway, i'm taking the opportunity to learn a bit of ajax. when it's all done, i'll make the code available in exchange for registration. so i'm still trying to get a handle on ajax but it's coming along, he button in the right shows a bit of progress. i'm going to continue in this post until it is done. i don't know how many readers are coders out there but right now i'm in the zone and nohing is going to get updated until this registration page s complete. it's pretty close so bare with me. here's a little tip to anyone thinking about learning php... use a syntax checker beacuse running stuff in a browser and trying to find out why it doesn't work is simply not funny. if i were to recommend, use netbeans for big pieces or something like https://www.piliapp.com/php-syntax-check/ for ittle snippets. register now modal content × thank you we have sent an e-mail to the address you provided as confirmation. we look forward to providing you with new and interesting content. instructions on how to unsubscribe appear at the bottom of your confirmation email. close --> × hatchnet registraion register to receive notification when updates and articles are added to hatchnet.com.au. display name email password submit close 12/10/2016 making a modal dialog box for registration. register now --> × hatchnet registraion email password i have read and agree to the conditions. close 09/10/2016 holiday over, time to get stuck in. so i have a basic form, looking at it, i think i want to get rid of the second password. i've never been a fan of entering a password twice, you can always retrieve them later via the usual reset password link. so i'll change to one password and add some basic validation and the code to save the password to the database table i've created. here's the revised form with some processing the save the details and give a message on an error. the details are saved to the database if all is okay. so i haven't been very forthcoming with the code in this session but i'll include a download link soon enough. i guess there's a bit of lazyness on my part becasue this isn't a cms at the moment althoug i might incorporate the wordpress library at a later date. in any case, the basic reistration form is complete but i just want to put it up on a bootstrap modal dialog box becasue i think it will be nicer. after that, i'll supply the code for anyone who wants it. email password i have read and agree to the conditions. 02/10/2016 on holidays in with a pc with is playing up. makes loading stuff to a server difficult but there's no reason i can't style a form to get an email address. here's a bootstrap styled form as a start point. don't bother trying to register here as there is not code beind it yet. stuff to add to the i will be using bootstrap 4 but for the moment i'm using a local copy of 3. i've added the cdn link for bootstrap 4 which will be enabled later the markup

and here is what it looks like email password i have read and agree to the conditions. 29/09/2016 okay, time for a bit of planning. i think, one of the first things i want to add is the ability for readers to make commentary on my posts but you can't just put a box there and have people type any trash they want. really, there will need to be at least a little substance. anyway, here i think is a list of stuff i think this new capability should have; register with an email address. get a nickname. ask if the person wants notification on updates. check the user is not a robot. give the user a status so we can review posts before allowing them to be displayed. email the user a welcome. optionally ask for a password. optionally send a verification link to the user. the last two i think i'll build in but not use at this stage but the functionality might be good down the track. if i do use it, i'll need a login page and the ability to reset the password. making the register table create table register ( email varchar(80), nickname varchar(80), notify char(1), status varchar(8), validation varchar(80), created_date date ) open the database db_open.php, this needs to be included at the start of pages that access the database, no, my password isn't '*******'; 28/09/2016 so there ain't much here yet but it all takes time. i'm using bootstrap 4.0 which is still in aplha (not ready to see the world yet) but i reckon by the time the site is ready, bootstrap 4 will be as well. i'm designing this site mostly as a showcase but also to experiment with various techniques. above, you can see a jumbotron which is the width of the page courtesy of it being outside of the container which is the page istself. the text in the jumbotron is in a container in order to limit the text to the center area of the page which makes it look a bit nicer. down here i've got two columns which will represent the sections of the site eventually. ive included some analytics code in order to see if anyone is interested in how te site is progressing there will be meaningful content here. website by hatchnet register
