gamestech.in bringing you useful tutorials, game & gadget reviews search main menu skip to primary content skip to secondary content homeabout the author post navigation ← older posts halo 5 guardians campaign review posted on november 30, 2015 by bsaiaditya reply halo, is it mc you’re looking for? almost three years ago, i sat here reviewing halo 4, singing its praises and (more specifically) impressed by what 343 industries had achieved. the developer kept the core of what made halo so popular in the first place and threw in just enough elements to keep things fresh. way to put the change of developer concerns to bed! now, with expectations heightened, it’s time for halo 5. the master chief’s first proper outing on the xbox one, does 343 industries deliver? even with online yet to be fully sampled, it seems like the answer is yes. game: halo 5: guardians developer: 343 industries publisher: microsoft studios reviewed on: after spending two days with halo 5 online, playing both competitive multiplayer and co-op campaign, i can very confidently add the score you see at the bottom of this review. none of the issues that plagued the master chief collection are present here, with 343 industries offering a smooth online experience no matter what mode you’re playing. starting with the co-op campaign, it plays just as well as the single player, so everything i stated originally applies and more. yes, more, because playing with three humans on heroic or legendary is so much damn fun. the ai in single player is very good, but nothing can replace that experience of playing with your friends on one of the higher difficulties and working to complete a mission. you’ll have no doubt have some epic moments, including (if you’re like me) falling down a ledge as you try to save a friend. yes, that really happened. i’d recommend playing through the campaign on your own first, mainly to experience the story, but co-op with friends (go for legendary) is a must play after. fun, so much fun! it’s great then that the competitive multiplayer is just as much fun, if not more. if you’ve been away from halo for a while you might struggle to keep up with the pace and feel of it all to begin (i did), but spend a few hours with it and you’ll be back into the groove. arena offers up what you’d usually expect from a halo game, including the likes of slayer, free-for-all and swat. you also have a new addition called breakout, where you have just the one life and either have to kill the opposing team or capture a flag that spawns in the middle. it’s an interesting inclusion and fun enough, but misses the point or type of experience it’s trying to deliver. this is mainly because, more often than not, it just ends up being five rounds slayer with one life. capturing the flag means very little, unless you’re playing with seven like-minded, strategic people, but even then it descends into a game of slayer that is over very quickly. i could be wrong, but i can’t imagine fans favouring breakout over the usual modes like slayer and swat – i certainly didn’t. the same can’t be said about halo 5’s biggest addition to multiplayer – warzone. it’s fantastic. accommodating up to 24 players, the mode has two objectives. the first team to score 1000 points or destroy the other team’s base wins. simple enough, but it’s the stuff that happens before you win or lose that is a whole of fun. to gain points you can not only kill the opposing team, but capture bases and kill ai enemies that spawn periodically. the latter introduces the most interesting dynamic. do you go try to go after/keep a base or venture out and try to take out a group of tough enemies? that’s the million dollar question, and it’s totally up to you. well, you and your team. yes, you have to work as a team to win in warzone. if you don’t, you’ll get humiliated. it’s key, so i’d recommend playing with friends, but i’ve had some decent matches with random players too. matches usually go on for about 25-30 minutes, so it’s gruelling and energy sapping at times, yet so satisfying when you emerge victorious. staying with warzone, another vital aspect of the mode is something 343 industries are calling requisitions. these are fifa ultimate team style cards you get in packs that reward you with weapons, vehicles and power ups. some will be single-use whereas as others unlimited. you want the latter, obviously. either way, all of them can be used in the warzone, but there is a catch. you need to have a high enough req level to use the card before you can access it via a station or before you spawn. also, when you die, you don’t come back into the match with whatever item you had before. it’s an interesting addition to an already good mode, and one i really like. mainly because it gives pretty much all players a chance (unless you’re awful) to get some decent weapons and vehicles, not just the top ones. it’s just a case of getting a few kills and capturing/gaining bases then choosing when to use a card. do you splurge out for a level two item or wait and unleash a level five one? much like the rest of the mode, the choice is yours. you can purchase some req packs with real money, but if you play arena and warzone regularly you shouldn’t need to spend a penny. i haven’t and  i have plenty of decent req cards. the usual halo customisation options are all present too, from being able to change your helmet to you choosing your own ‘service tag’. keep a look out for ngb1, that’s me. got to represent. you know how it is. well, 343 industries certainly does as the multiplayer offering in halo 5 is simply brilliant. if it’s kept updated with new maps and content, this a game you could easily keep playing until the next game in the series is out. not that the maps present aren’t good, because they are! most of them are really well designed, showing 343 industries get the essence of this series’ multiplayer. the studio has done a great job. it’s the halo multiplayer so many know and love, but rejuvenated thanks to new modes and tweaks to the gameplay. since the servers went live on 26th october, i haven’t stopped playing. that says it all. master chief going rogue. spartan locke hunting him down. that’s the angle microsoft and 343 industries have been pushing with halo 5’s pre-release trailers, but a few missions in that notion is well and truly put to bed. the man in the green suit has not gone rogue. there is a very good reason why he’s doing his own thing with blue team, disobeying direct orders and travelling across the galaxy. on the other side of the coin, spartan locke and fireteam osiris are just following orders, but this is the chief we’re talking about. i do have some minor issues with it (a bit out there and confusing), but it grows on you and by the end of the game actually has some weight. still, it’s sure to divide fan opinion. there’ll be no sitting on the fence here. there’s an interesting dynamic at play though, almost bearing resemblance to the happenings in metal gear solid 2. not quite as dramatic in its execution, but yes you don’t play as the master chief for the majority of the campaign. instead, you’re placed in the boots of spartan locke and his osiris comrades for 12 out of the 15 missions. it’s a bold move from 343 industries, brave even, but it works. much like solid snake in metal gear solid 2, you see and appreciate master chief from a different point of view. elsewhere, the story is steeped in halo lore, meaning you’ll either enjoy it or you won’t. having played all the games in the series, i fall more in the former camp, but there were times i found myself somewhat baffled by what was going on. if you’re a newcomer to the series, you’ll be completely lost. however, it’s fifth game in a long-running series, so it’s a little naive to go in expecting a complete rundown of previous games. on the gameplay front, things are slightly different. it’s still halo at its core (guns, grenades and melee still key), but feels more modern, fresh and up to date. unlike the story, the gameplay is now a far more enticing prospect if you haven’t managed to get into a halo game before. it’s something that you could see the beginnings of in halo 4, but is now fully realised in halo 5. for example, you can now aim down the sights (albeit in different ways) of every single weapon in the game. it’s a common feature in almost all first-person shooters these days, and it’s about time halo followed suit. it makes battles less frustrating than previous outings, giving you the ability to zoom in with your trusty assault rifle and take down distant enemies. i can’t fathom how i played a halo game with it now! it’s something you’ll need too as the enemy ai is fantastic. having played the campaign on normal and heroic, i witnessed packs of enemies rushing me and ducking or slipping behind cover when they were vulnerable. it’s really impressive and transitions across to your ai teammates as well. they’ll rarely stand around doing nothing, choosing to get involved in the action and be useful instead. plus, they’ll revive you and you can tell them to focus fire on specific enemies, introducing a surprising (but welcome) element of strategy to the gameplay. keeping up with the modern theme, the spartan suit is now equipped with a booster. it’s not unlimited, but is very handy if you want to quickly dodge attacks or boost across to slightly out of reach platforms.  the latter ties in nicely with the halo 5’s much improved level design, with the majority of missions being set in fairly wide open areas. noticeably more spacious than halo 4, 343 industries has filled the levels with different routes and paths you can take. not only that, there is an added layer of verticality to areas. this compliments the already improved jumping from halo 4 and addition of the boost mechanic really well; meaning traversing the levels is a whole lot of fun. the verticality also means you can assess shootouts from above then shift to the ground and proceed to kick some alien ass. oh and how much fun it is to do exactly that. usually a halo game has an annoying section or two, but halo 5 bucks that trend. i genuinely can’t remember being frustrated or annoyed at any part of the game. yes, there is one particular high level enemy (not sure if you can call it a boss battle) that pops up a few times, but even that isn’t an annoyance. no, it’s challenging, intense and (importantly) fun. the moment to moment gameplay is great; you’re never too far away from the next story beat or pulsating enemy encounter. there are some truly excellent and enjoyable set pieces as well, plenty in fact. you’ll go from blowing up everything in sight in a vehicle (ground and air) to fighting alongside a familiar character in an epic battle. there are so many, but i don’t want to spoil any others so i’ll stop. thinking about it, i can’t remember being this enthralled by a halo campaign, enjoying it so much that i finished it in ten hours over just two days. it all looks and sounds great too. the first proper outing for the series on the xbox one is an impressive one. from what i gather 1080p is a bit of rarity as the 343 industries adjust the resolution on the fly to maintain 60fps around 99% of the time. this results in the most fluid halo gameplay experience to date, even with many enemies, effects and explosions taking place on the screen. i did notice something weird though. occasionally, it seemed like enemies in the distance were moving at a slower framerate that the games itself. given the impressive nature of the solid 60fps, it’s a slight negative, but nothing that impacted my enjoyment of halo 5 in a huge way. that said, even with 1080p being a rare thing, halo 5 is a looker and a half. the wide open areas and the sky boxes that surround them look absolutely gorgeous. i even like the way the hud is displayed (probably the only one that does), mimicking the spartan helmet’s visor and field of view well. then you have the audio, complimenting the visuals and the gameplay beautifully. as you’d expect the iconic theme is present, joined by some epic orchestral pieces. here is a video from next-gen gaming blog: given my praise of 2012’s halo 4, it’s fair to say i’m a fan of the direction 343 industries has and is taking the halo series. after playing through halo 5’s campaign, that opinion hasn’t changed. at its core, it’s still got that familiar halo feel, but freshened up to match what you’d expect from a modern first-person shooter. it’s so much fun. the higher difficulty settings, excellent ai (both enemy and teammate), collectables and level design mean it’s just begging to be played multiple times too. i have a few minor issues with the story, but in terms of gameplay and the way it flows halo 5 is the best campaign of the series. verdict freshened up and finely tweaked, halo has never felt better to play. it’s just so much fun. the gunplay is simply fantastic. it’s the best campaign in the series and the multiplayer offering is truly astounding. there’s so much to do! the story makes a few minor missteps here and there, but apart from that halo 5 delivers. finally, a reason to own an xbox one. 9.5/10 posted in uncategorized | leave a reply android m features posted on october 31, 2015 by bsaiaditya reply google has officially announced what the m in android m stands for, and it’s marshmallow. here are the features you can expect from android 6.0. it’s time to prod the marshmallow: android marshmallow is here. but you still have a while to wait unless you own a nexus 6, nexus 5 or nexus 9, or plan on picking up a nexus 5x or nexus 6p. so, the question: is android m worth getting excited about? we’ve been spending some quality time with the new software to see what it offers over the android lollipop version we’ve been using for what feels like forever. here are the features that take android marshmallow a step further. is it enough to steamroll ios 9 and windows 10? for now at least, we’ll leave that to you. the apps menu is crazy-different one android marshmallow change all of you will notice is the way the new apps menu works. it’s totally different to lollipop and the other previous versions of android. this time, instead of a bunch of apps ‘pages’ you flick through horizontally, the apps box is a scroll thumbed through with a smooth vertical movement. it’s a lot more like windows 10/windows phone’s apps menu, or that of the htc sense custom android interface. is it better? is it worse? this is very much a case of being different rather than better, but it does scroll very snappily on the nexus 6 we’ve been using. those with big app collections may find it faster. and, as in android lollipop, the apps are arranged alphabetically rather than letting you move them about yourself. as before, there are no app menu folders either. you have to keep these on the home screens, if you want ‘em. app search bar and favourites in order to help those who think the new apps menu is worse, and there will be some, there are some extra features to the apps area. first, there’s a search bar up at the top. this is a text bar you just type words into, and android marshmallow searches your app collection for any apps with that name. there’s also an option to use the search term to look for other apps in google play. if your apps library is so massive you can’t remember which apps/games you’ve uninstalled, this bit will let you get them back on-board sharpish. there are also four special apps slots right at the top of the apps menu. these are filled using an algorithm that picks the most important apps based on those you use most, and have used most recently. on the nexus 6 these extra interface elements can feel like a bit of a stretch to reach. but then 95 per cent of people think the phone is that bit too big anyway. the nexus 6x should feel comfier. the clock has gone all stylish lollipop upped android’s style game, and marshmallow tries to take that a step further with a redesigned clock. it’s little more than a font shuffle, but does give the new software a bit of a different, sharper visual personality. check it out below. the date text is now written in all-caps, and the font of the time characters seems to be a bit thicker, as if google has hit the ‘bold’ button. image: http://static.trustedreviews.com/94/000035703/b466_orh616w616/clock-msg.jpg google has added a memory manager one of the complaints about android lollipop was that its memory-hungry nature introduced all sorts of performance problems in phones without absolutely loads of ram. a new feature lets you check out the memory usage of all your installed apps without using a third-party app. there’s a whole new ‘memory’ area in the main settings menu. however, before you get too excited, it’s mostly about monitoring ram use and seeing if there are any apps doing things they really shouldn’t rather than tinkering with how much memory apps are allowed. you can see the ram use over the last 3, 6, 12 or 24 hours, to let you identify when and where things are going wrong without too much active monitoring on your part. as is so often the case with android, you’ll still likely have to try uninstalling/reinstalling any apps that are seriously misbehaving. you can add a lock screen message a tiny little tweak of android m is that you can now add a little line of text to your lock screen. maybe you’ll want to add a little tag to your ‘jim’s vhs and dvd rental’ small business, or a way to tell you and your other half’s his ’n’ hers nexus 6s apart. image: http://static.trustedreviews.com/94/000035704/ca83_orh616w616/clock.jpg unlike the date font, this little extra line is written in lower case, and seems to have opacity of just under 100 per cent, making it a bit less bright than the clock. it’s basically a custom number plate for your phone: go to town. battery optimisation now on a by-app basis android only really started to embrace proper a battery-saving mode with android lollipop, even though custom skins have had such features for years now. android marshmallow adds a whole new battery area called ‘optimisation’. image: http://static.trustedreviews.com/94/00003570d/66e3_orh616w616/opt-1.jpg this tweaks how apps eat energy when not being actively used in order to save battery life. as standard, all apps bar the android system itself use battery optimisation, and all you can do is make important apps exempt from this feature. google hasn’t laid out too clearly exactly what optimisation does, but you can bet part of it is about regulating access to mobile data and how freely they can perform background processes. the volume controls have changed yet again one part of android lollipop that everyone got quite angry about originally was the volume control. the silent mode was ditched completely. it caused a bit of a fuss. it has returned, sort of. android marshmallow has a do not disturb shortcut in the notifications drop-down that lets you switch off certain alerts for a period of time, or indefinitely. it does feel kind of fiddly still, but is designed to make sure you don’t switch the feature on and then end up missing your early morning alarm. this new spot for do not disturb lets android marshmallow pare down the volume controls a bit. press the volume button and you’ll see the slider for system notifications. next to it there’s a drop-down arrow that gives you access to the separate ‘media’ and ‘alarms’ volume dials. fingerprint scanners supported as standard finger scanners have been found in android phones for years now. however, it’s only with android marshmallow that the system supports the hardware natively. before now, software for these scanners had to be jammed in by the manufacturer. both the nexus 5x and nexus 6p have rear fingerprint scanners, and google calls the system nexus imprint. it lets you unlock your phone with a finger-press, as an identification measure in apps and to sign off on pay wireless payments. pay has been around for years now, but more recently google re-announced it as android pay. hopefully it’ll catch on this time. instant google now ‘ok googling’ android 6.0 makes the system’s digital assistant way more useful. where before it was largely consigned to the google now area of the phone, it can be accessed to look up things wherever you are, using something called now on tap. first of all, you can talk to the assistant whenever the phone is on the home screen just by saying ‘ok google’. don’t like talking to your phone? one of the neatest parts of android marshmallow is that the digital assistant can now be called up everywhere. a long-press on the home button makes the google now assistant scan whatever’s on the screen to find extra info online that might be helpful. it works absolutely anywhere. one example of a good use we found was looking at tripadvisor for a local restaurant, then using google now to fly straight to that place’s menu url. neat, right? the only bit it doesn’t seem to do yet is to ocr text in photos to google now-ify your photo gallery. maybe one day, eh google? permissions are on lock down before android marshmallow, app permissions were granted at the point of install. you agree to give an app access to, say, your camera, contacts and storage as soon as the app begins installing. this has changed. from now on, apps will have to ask for your permission to access the camera, at the point where they want to use it. it’ll make things much clearer, letting you see exactly what apps are doing in the background. for all apps already granted permissions, you’re also given a much clearer round-up of what’s what in the settings menu. a dedicated section shows you which apps have access to your camera, your contacts and so on, and you can revoke them at the press of a switch. usb type-c/3.1 support one important bit of future-proofing is full support for usb-c, which is closely linked to the usb 3.1 standard. we’ve seen this plug already in the oneplus 2, but it was really just a usb 2.0 port with a different connector. the big news is the new set of capabilities we’ll see when ‘proper’ usb-c phones arrive, with usb 3.1 support. they’ll be able transmit 40x the power of the current usb connectors, although exactly how much power phones of the future are going to gobble up is something we don’t know yet. bandwidth will increase too, but it’s the prospect of even faster-charging batteries that has us excited. doze in a bid to hopefully give your battery life a boost, android marshmallow introduces a feature that recognises when the android device is in a rested state to help conserve power. google says it has tested it with a nexus 9 and claims it can help make battery life last two times longer in standby mode by using fewer background services. if you’re worried about missing out on alarms and incoming instant messages, doze will still allow those notifications and modes to be activated. when will android 6.0 marshmallow be available? google has announced that the android marshmallow launch will be at the beginning of october. currently, developers can play around with the final android marshmallow builds on the nexus 5 and 6 smartphones plus the nexus 9 and nexus player set-top box. google has since confirmed that the nexus 7 will also be among the first devices to the get the marshmallow treatment. posted in uncategorized | leave a reply the most important announcements from apple wwdc 2015 posted on september 14, 2015 by bsaiaditya reply if there’s one reveal people were hoping for at wwdc, it was apple’s long-rumored music service. on this count, tim cook delivered, promising to “change the way that you experience music forever” with a new streaming platform. it’s entering a crowded market, and apple seems to be banking quite a bit on star power and exclusive access — drake showed up to promote connect, a platform that lets artists upload music or photos for subscribers; apple is touting radio stations where a “team of experts” picks music instead of an algorithm; and canadian artist the weeknd wrapped everything up with a song. flashy as the whole thing was, though, it followed two hours of low-key but fairly solid tweaks to apple’s software products, from new versions of os x and ios to updates of its car, home, and watch software. this fall, apple product users of all stripes can look forward to a lot of refreshed apps and, if the company delivers on its promise, all sorts of siri integration. they might not make headlines quite as well, but little changes like maps public transit support can make a big difference in the long run, too. meet os x el capitan os x 10.11, otherwise known as el capitan, is more about tweaking the os x experience and improving performance than redesigning the whole interface. safari, for example, now allows you to “pin” sites, so they’ll load instantly from the landing page. it also lets you mute audio in tabs without entering specific pages. spotlight allows you more extensive and integrated search capabilities: you can look up sporting event tickets, weather, and upcoming events using natural language. improved windows management means that you can automatically split your screen between apps and store multiple desktop layouts in a navigation bar on top. and metal, the optimization tool apple first introduced for mobile processors last year, will supposedly now give el capitan a performance boost. surprise, surprise, ios 9 is here too much like the new version of os x, ios 9 is less about radical change than making refinements. the notes app is gaining more functionality (like drawing!), while passbook has become “wallet.” newsstand has become “news.” healthkit tracks more data, including uv exposure and menstrual cycles. ios 9 is supposed to even take up less space on your iphone, and it offers a “low power mode” to squeeze three extra hours out of the battery. the ipad, meanwhile, has new productivity options — among other things, users can open two apps side-by-side on a single ipad air 2. developers can get their hands on all the new features when apple drops the public beta — its first ever for ios — in july. the final version will be available in the fall. siri gets ‘proactive’ reminiscent of google now, the ios “proactive assistant” initiative uses the data on your phone to give contextual advice and options. that means scanning email and putting invitations directly into your calendar, or automatically offering an energetic soundtrack to your morning run. siri now suggests individuals you may want to call, apps you may want to use at a certain time of day, and breaking news you may want to read. while this bears a fair resemblance to google’s tools, apple is playing up its privacy advantages, promising all your data will stay on the phone instead of in the cloud. apple pay in the uk apple pay launched last year, and at this wwdc, apple announced some new partners, including trader joe’s and jc penney. payment processing company square will also be launching a new apple pay-compatible reader this fall. but the most important announcement might be that it’s moving outside the us: apple pay will be coming to the uk in july. besides eight banks and a variety of british brands, it will work with the london transportation system — something no american public transit authority has managed so far. apple’s passbook service, meanwhile, is turning into a service called wallet, and apple pay itself is getting support for rewards cards. apple maps finally has public transit directions one of the biggest strikes against apple maps has been its lack of public transit directions, but that’s changing. in ios 9, maps will support bus, ferry, subway, and train routes. apple is actually trying to one-up the other transit apps on the market by mapping subway stations to offer a more accurate estimate of travel times. transit maps are being released for select cities: baltimore, new york, san francisco, beijing, shenzhen, among others. there are a few more tweaks as well. if you search for nearby stores, for example, siri will tell you whether they support apple pay. newsstand is out, news is in apple is taking an app most people hide in an “other” folder and making it useful: newsstand is out, “news” is in. it’s an app that lets you read articles from all sorts of publications — essentially a combination of flipboard and facebook’s instant articles. you can follow publications or topics, or have the news app suggest new content based on what you read. some publications will even be able to design their stories specifically for news, too. it looks extremely slick — especially the natively designed articles. apple didn’t say when news will be available, but the new app will roll out in the us, the uk, and australia at the start. the apple watch gets a big software update less than two months into its life, the apple watch has a new operating system: watchos 2. it has some more options for watch faces, including the cutely named “time travel,” which gives you an overview of upcoming events in addition to what’s going on at the moment. there’s a little bit more interactivity overall — you can, say, reply to emails instead of just reading them. developers will have more control; they can make apps that play back video and audio using the watch speakers, and there’s full support for healthkit and homekit. naturally, some of the latest improvements to ios 9 — like transit directions in maps — cross over to the apple watch as well. developers have access to the latest watchos today; like ios 9, it’s coming to consumers in the fall. homekit can control more of your home homekit, apple’s smart home platform, is being expanded beyond its current limited functionality — it will now be capable of adjusting window shades, motion sensors, and security systems. currently, homekit is tied to apple tv, but it sounds like soon enough, you’ll be able to use your iphone or ipad as well, as long as it’s connected via icloud. it’s a basic system, but integrating homekit with your iphone makes homekit instantly accessible to a much wider user base. car makers can build their own carplay apps like ios 9 and os x, apple’s auto operating system got some big upgrades today, too. the most important is that carplay will allow auto makers to develop apps that control your car’s features. going forward, you won’t have to leave the carplay os to do things like turn the heat on. carplay will also now support high-dpi screens at multiple display sizes, meaning manufacturers are free to design around carplay any way they see fit. and one more thing: apple music apple saved its new music service for the end of its keynote, and even dusted off the jobs-era saying for its debut. at first blush, it sounds like apple music has all the necessary features. you can stream your favorite artists, watch music videos and exclusive clips in hd, and listen to curated playlists. there’s also a feature (called “connect”) that lets unsigned artists upload their music. apple’s even created a global radio station called beats 1 and hired zane lowe to run it. you get all that for $9.99 per month, and there’s also a $14.99 family plan option that lets you share apple music with up to five other people. that gives apple a slight edge when it comes to pricing, but jimmy iovine, drake, and tim cook didn’t mention much else that sounds all that different from the services apple music will compete against. it will be available on ios starting june 30th and — maybe most importantly — it’s also coming to android this fall. what’s next in more ways than one, this year’s wwdc echoed google’s recent i/o keynote — both companies are building increasingly expansive, smarter, and responsive ecosystems for everything from your wrist to your car. but the two events were also defined by small improvements. sure, apple music could shake up the streaming marketplace, but the event emphasized iterative changes: a more powerful os x and ios, a smarter siri, a more full-featured apple watch, and better-supported mobile payments. as for the hardware that will be running all of this, we’ll have to wait until later this year. and while no one really expected otherwise, apple’s plans for one major piece of tech — the tv — remain elusive. courtesy: theverge.com posted in uncategorized | leave a reply how to theme windows 8.1 purchasing this device, i have decided to do a quick review on it. the some, the attraction of the masses to apple devices is almost unfathomable. the iphone has never been one of the most powerful handsets in the world, nor the smallest / largest, and yet seven years later it has retained (and grown) its unshakeable following. however, in the last 18 months, the death knells have started quietly sounding, ringing in the distance as the best android phones – once only a rival on spec or price – became genuine challengers and then out-and-out better handsets. tim cook knew the brand needed to do something, and quickly – and that’s just what’s happened, with the iphone 6 representing one of the most comprehensive overhauls of the iphone range since the iphone 4 – and actually going one step further in a lot of ways. the processor is obviously uprated, the camera quicker and more capable than ever before, and the battery has been enlarged significantly to quell the disquiet at the power use of previous models. but there’s so much more here that represents a seismic shift for apple: the increased resolution on the screen is really helpful (and badly needed) and the payments mechanism, while limited to the us only at the moment, will be the boost that the smartphone payment industry needed. and of course the larger screen will stop admiring glances from those locked into the ios ecosystem to phones such as the htc one m8 and sony xperia z3. design apple’s design overhaul is much-needed and as much as many could have hoped for – taking a number of cues from the ipad air to bring a metallic, almost ceramic, shell that feels simply brilliant in the hand. say what you like about apple, it’s a brand that’s always put design at the forefront of its new handsets. even the iphone 5s, probably the most unimaginative of all of cupertino’s handsets, had a strong build that screamed quality in the hand, giving the user the instant feeling of something worth spending a lot on. the iphone 6 pushes that idea to the next level, losing the sharp edges in favour of sleek and rounded sides that make the device much more pleasing in the palm. it just feels so thin, but doesn’t have the overly-lightweight feeling of the iphone 5s. there is a worry that this is a slippier handset than before thanks to the more rounded nature of the design, but then again with apple (apparently) upgrading the glass in the screen to something that can withstand many, many more bumps and bruises before shattering, that might not be the horrid experience it might once have been. the larger screen is certainly an improvement on the previous models – while i think 4.7-inches is going to be a tiny bit small for those that have lusted after their friends’ galaxy s5 devices with the 5.2-inch screen, it’s still a very good size for one hand. if it wasn’t, then why would sony have launched the xperia z3 compact and samsung the galaxy alpha, both within 0.1-inch of the iphone 6’s screen size? the issue with the iphone 5s, with the cramped screen making it almost impossible to peck out the letters on the keyboard, has now definitely been alleviated. it’s not got a great resolution, at only 1334 x 750 it’s essentially 720p, but the new retina hd screen looks brilliant. so much so that i thought i was picking up a dummy model to play with. and if you’re so desperate for the larger resolution, there’s always the iphone 6 plus to be looking at, despite that being more of a phablet / note 4 rival. the upgraded resolution is a good jump for apple, but not quite enough really for the spec fans. while i think the brand had it right a few years ago when it launched the retina display, times have moved on. some people say that the full hd / qhd displays on offer today from sony, samsung and lg are overkill, but there’s no way that you won’t see the difference in sharpness if you put the iphone 5s and lg g3 next to one another. however, it’s the same ppi as the iphone 5s, so the iphone 6 might not stand up to sharpness tests next to the best the android world has to offer. it must be tremendously frustrating to create a quality, well-selling app and then find the resolution you coded for is now old news. the good news is that while you’re spending hours making an iphone 6 version, the phone can scale old apps to still work. it’s not going to be a perfect experience, but it’s another example of apple’s decent ecosystem – if this was a handset running on the android platform, a new resolution simply means the app won’t run full stop, so at least there’s some continuity here. in terms of the performance advantage apple has given itself, the new a8 processor certainly seems up to the task. while (as usual) we’ve not heard much in the way of specs for it, save to say it’s the same 64-bit architecture that apple added into the mix last year. as such, the same snappiness is there in terms of camera processing, general browsing and app use, but it will only be with some serious use that the power of the new a8 chip will show itself. and while we’ve not been told the ram inside the iphone 6, there’s a feeling that apple will have doubled it at least to 2gb in order to facilitate more powerful and impressive apps, as well as allowing the phone to function better under duress. apple pay one of the big changes here, along with the newly announced iphone plus, is the new apple pay system. it means the iphone finally packs nfc technology inside, which means the tech is finally here to stay as all the top vendors are now using it by default. there’s not a lot of surprise here, but the nfc element syncs with passbook to allow you to pay simply with a tap of the phone. apple pay is essentially the same as most contactless methods of payment, and uses the current readers to let you pay with your phone (or even your apple watch). i’ll be digging deeper into this very soon, but the initial look showed that apple getting on board and making it simple for consumers could be the boost this area needed to let you scrap the wallet. ios 8 the new operating system that was debuted at wwdc earlier in the year has the expected poster boy in the iphone 6 – while it’s not a massive overhaul of the platform, it brings with it some nifty tweaks. for instance, the updated notifications center is imbued with better powers than before, allowing you to see more relevant information from a simple pull down from the top of the screen. this action isn’t as easy as it once was, thanks to the larger screen, but that’s worth it for the greater real estate to play with. the new os brings with it other big upgrades, such as the ability to use other keyboards in the future – the thought of swiftkey on an iphone, and one without such cramped conditions for typing is an appealing one – which shows that apple knows it needs to do something big to keep up with the smartphone competition amid eroding market share. camera the camera on the iphone 6 isn’t much of a change… from the outside. it’s still 8mp, and still doesn’t record in 4k. but that would miss some of the big changes: the f/2.2 aperture, the new isight camera with superfast autofocus thanks to ‘focus pixels’ and the same trick repeated with the video, for smooth shooting even if you’re moving around. the iphone 6 has digital image stabilisation, unlike its larger iphone 6 plus brother, which packs optical image stabilisation for a likely slightly crisper picture. but the cool thing (if you like slo-mo video) is the phone can now shoot at 240fps, which is a fantastically sharp way of looking at what people are doing really, really slowly. i’ll be digging into the camera more in a short while, so again: stay tuned. early verdict the iphone 6 is a really rather good handset indeed. while i can’t bring myself to say ‘it’s the best iphone ever made’ again (it is, but i promised i wouldn’t write that again after saying the same thing for three reviews in a row), in the pantheon of apple handsets the iphone 6 will go down as a pivotal moment. the new payment mechanisms, the increased screen and battery size and the overhauled design come from a phone that is finally following, at least partly, the path laid out by the competition rather than steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that consumers are looking for something else. it will still command the same eye-watering price tag as before, but this time it certainly warrants it – if you’re after a new phone and are toying with leaving apple’s ecosystem, don’t. this is very likely the phone for you, offering all the simplicity and power of ios combined with hardware that rivals some of the best the android army has to offer. courtesy: techradar.com posted in uncategorized |
