(for those of you yet to discover it, it is chilli fermented cabbage with a variety of things, usually garlic, ginger , spring onions, something sweet like asian pear or carrot, and lots of wonderful korean red pepper, gochugaru). continue reading travelling, uk bristol guide: where to eat, drink and stay colourful and hilly, dotted with street art and that famous suspension bridge, bristol has a great energy. known for its buzzing cultural scene, bristol is also packed with independent restaurants, bars and cafes, the eating and drinking options are surprising for a city of its size. of course, there are the chains as with everywhere, but you can comfortably avoid them. bristol is a creative city and this is reflected everywhere. continue reading brunch, cooking, eggs, potatoes, spice, vegetarian masala fries and a perfect fried egg it has just started snowing in london. snow! i am hiding inside under my duvet while i work, with the heating on. i need carbs and spice and a perfect egg with a runny yolk. masala fries are in my mind a lot recently, not just because they are delicious and so satisfying, but also because my corner shop has started stocking them in their freezer. i see them every time i walk out of the shop. they are so easy to make at home, and as with most things, all the better for it. today was the day that i would make them. continue reading france, travelling learning to ski in morzine in the french alps i wasn’t one of those kids that went on skiing holidays, nor have i been one of those adults. i love winter and i adore being in the snow breathing in the gorgeous crisp air. i love snowmobiles and husky rides, frozen rivers and puddles shattered into ice. i love crunching along, my feet sinking in as i walk. i like my face feeling cold and the rest of me toasty warm as i wander about. ice fishing is fun (especially when you catch something). but skiing or snowboarding had never appealed. i am risk averse and not overly enamoured with sports (my sport of choice is dancing, although i used to be quite good at trampolining in university for a while surprisingly!). i quite like to relax with a book and take it all in gently over a glass of hot wine. continue reading breakfast, brunch, cooking, eggs porcini congee with soy cured egg yolk i have been on a porcini kick since i was in france last month, specifically since i had a cep fondue (cep and porcini are one and the same thing). i prefer the word porcini, so let’s use that. porcini are a magical little thing. they confer a depth of flavour to any dish. something of the woods and something rich, which when combined with soy sauce reaches a throaty gorgeous rumble. throw a homemade chicken stock in the mix and you have something wonderful. i fancied trying the combination in that eastern wonder dish, congee. continue reading australia, travelling where to eat, drink and stay in perth, australia perth sits on the edge of australia, it feels like the edge of the world with the nearest large city adelaide being 2,104km away. this adds to the charm, it is refreshingly laid back and there is much to do. perth stretches along the coastline, and so it doesn’t feel big or overwhelming. as with other australian cities that i have visited (melbourne, sydney), there is a thriving and exciting food culture here. it may be the most isolated city in the world, but it is attracting impressive culinary talent and there are many new restaurants and bars. as with all my food research trips, everywhere is researched thoroughly and only the restaurants that i rate and that cut above the others make the list. enjoy! perth is a fun city and there are lots of great places to eat. also in this series: a culinary road trip from perth to margaret river where to eat, drink and stay in fremantle a postcard from western australia (through a food lens) continue reading cooking, sweet treats rhubarb and coconut custard it was one of those days, i just needed some rhubarb and custard. i adored it as a child, usually a huge bowl of rhubarb and a decent dollop of custard on top. today i reversed that with a bowl of homemade coconut custard and some poached yorkshire rhubarb on top. because i can, and because the custard was gorgeous. rhubarb and custard whisks me to childhood with every bite. i loved custard, usually whipped from bird’s powder or ushered from a carton (no judgement – i loved it). then in school, with the advance of compulsory home economics lessons (i do believe that every school should have them) i discovered real custard. made slowly over gentle heat. pouring custard, baked custard, and baked apples with custard. eyes wide open, eggs, sugar and milk in gorgeous alchemy. i have been hooked ever since. continue reading france, travelling where to eat and drink in les gets in the french alps les gets is gorgeous small town in the french alps. perfect for ski fanatics, and also people like me who love the calm of winter and the snow. i prefer to be inside looking out from a great table, and so i explored the best eating and drinking options that les gets has to offer. les gets has a lovely laid back charm with slopes on both sides, and many restaurants and bars overlooking or next to the pistes. les gets partners excellently with morzine being just a few kilometres away with cross country ski routes and easy access. there is also a ski pass for both morzine and les gets, so it makes sense to do both. in terms of what you eat and drink, i have got you covered. all tried and tested with the eat like a girl seal of approval. see also: where to eat and drink in morzine in the french alps le bacchus continue reading australia, travelling a culinary road trip from perth to margaret river western australia is vast and diverse, it is perfect for a road trip. before i visited i imagined horizons filled orange soil and hot searing temperatures. what greeted me instead as i journeyed south from perth at the end of winter was moderate temperatures, lush greens, flowers and lots of vegetation, all hugging the ocean as we journeyed by, stopping to soak it up occasionally as we did. there are many options, the obvious choice for me was to drive to margaret river, a wine region just over 3 hours drive from perth, with some lovely pitstops along the way. there are wonderful beaches, great places to eat, limestone underground caves and you can go whale watching. the main reason you should go is the food and wine, and just to indulge in how gorgeous it all is. margaret river has 187 wineries and 215 vineyards (as counted in 2015). it is surrounded by the ocean on three sides without extreme seasons providing ideal conditions for producing wine. wineries mainly produce bordeaux style wines (semillon and sauvignon blanc blends are common as are cabernet sauvignon and shiraz), margaret river has been compared to bordeaux in a dry vintage. the reds are gentle. there are established producers like leeuwin estate (who produced their first commercial vintage in 1979) and newer ones like fraser gallop (whose first vintage was 2008). lots to explore and most tastings are free, if you fancy driving yourself winery to winery. continue reading cooking, vegetarian butternut squash, sage and chilli gratin sometimes you need something creamy, a little sweet, with some spice. this last sunday evening, i was craving something soft and rich and gorgeous. not baby food, it should still have some texture, but i wanted it to be velveteen with an underlying almost fierce bite. it needed to be savoury too and it better have a cheesy crust, lets make that a parmesan one. continue reading france, travelling where to eat & drink in morzine in the french alps morzine is a busy town with lots of places to eat and drink. standards are high generally and there are lots of great options. all here are tried and tested and get the eat like a girl seal of approval. enjoy, and do share any tips you might have in the comments. see also: where to eat and drink in les gets in the french alps (the town next door to morzine, you can get there easily via cross country ski or car). continue reading cooking haggis, whisky cream sauce & a maple old fashioned i worked with balblair whisky on this post in celebration of burns night. (read more about sponsored content on eat like a girl). hold on to your hats, it is haggis time! it is burns night tonight, which is terrific for scottish people who get to celebrate their culture. it is great for the rest of us too as their culture is fun and delicious. whisky and haggis for me, every time, with a dash of robbie burns, the scottish poet that the night is named for. haggis? you may be afraid of it (it won’t bite). sure. haggis is visceral, and i know many of you have reservations. the rest of you love it and are quite evangelical about haggis and the joy it brings to your table. and you are not all scottish. continue reading random 2016: all that travel, cooking, eating and a vegetable garden hold on to your hats! 2016 was a bruiser, and 2017 looks to be even more intense. brexit. trump. the horror of all of the wars and the refugee crisis. i don’t feel there is much to celebrate, but as always, life can be bright even in the shadows and we need to focus on that. we need to try and maintain hope for a better future while not losing sight of everything around us, in an effort to make it all better for everyone, not just ourselves. i know you know that, but i need to keep reminding myself. borlotti been seedling wild garlic porchetta continue reading cooking, italy, pasta, travelling how to make cappelletti in brodo from san marino for christmas lunch it makes me cheerful to know that right now, the kitchens of san mario are bustling with nonnas making their christmas pasta, cappelletti in brodo. pasta is being hand rolled by expert hands, and being filled with a mix of beef, pork and chicken with some parmesan and nutmeg (and other family secret ingredients, of course), before being shaped into delicate cappelletti which will be served in a christmas capon broth (a capon is a castrated cockerel and an incredibly flavourful bird). it is a gorgeous dish, rich and light and delicate all at once. i want it for christmas lunch also. continue reading christmas, cooking top tips for how to cook the perfect turkey you have to cook a turkey. don’t panic! it is all good. i know how to save the day. just call me your turkey super hero. or niamh will do (knee-uv, if you think it is tricky!). i quite like turkey when it is well sourced and cooked properly. it can be moist and flavourful, but most people think that they hate it because they have only had sorry overcooked ones before. over the years i have cracked the turkey code. top turkey cooking tips continue reading brunch, cooking chipotle cheese steaks and a bloody maria to cure all ills this post is a collaboration with tabasco. who doesn’t love tabasco? tabasco asked me to come up with some recipes to ease you through the mornings after of your festive season, and as it is a bit of a specialist subject of mine, i agreed with much enthusiasm — you can follow the action on social media by checking out the hashtag #tabascosquadgoals. who doesn’t love steak and beer and cheese? they sound like a curious combination for a hangover, but trust me, this is the one. this will fix things and make everything ok. christmas hangovers. that regular cretin that comes creeping to the end of your bed just as the sun rises to torture and tease you for much of the day. the first is ok, even the second, but then they pile one on top of the other until eventually you can’t cope. in ireland we call this the fear, your very own ghost of christmas present. the fear is debilitating. it makes you question everything you are doing and everything you have ever done. that is when you will see me hiding in my bed or under my duvet on the sofa. the only redemption is something good to eat, and a drink (but not too much). you see, when you are at this stage, the only way out is through. chipotle cheese steaks and a bloody maria continue reading bbq, christmas, cooking smoked garlic potato dauphinoise with cavolo nero and bacon as my big green egg cools down, i like to take advantage of the residual heat. it is great for hot smoking things like tomatoes and garlic which you can store in the fridge for later uses. chunky slices of tomatoes become jammy, and garlic with some butter and olive oil to encourage it, becomes a sticky nutty brown, not unlike korean black garlic (which is essentially cooked slowly over a low heat for a long time). you can do a speedier version as your big green egg heats up also, it will be more of a roasted version, but it is still very good. potato dauphinoise is wonderfully indulgent and a perfect christmas side. i remember my first proper bite of dauphinoise in a french restaurant in cork. i couldn’t believe how could it was. crisp and caramel brown on top, gentle underneath, sliced potatoes shuffled into position, yielding to the fork, each forkful a perfect bite. continue reading bbq, christmas, cooking smoked sprouts with ‘nduja and hazelnuts sprout up your life! if you wanna have a good time! (etc to the dulcid tones of the spice girls). but yes, sprouts. so misunderstood. often tortured and boiled for way too long a time. i used to hate them, the infernal tiny cabbages wheeled out for some torturous boiling before they meet the christmas table. who liked cabbage? (i did not). why would you want lots of tiny cabbages? i didn’t know just how good they were, i always met them tired and burned out and no one looks good like that. sprouts are all the better for a quick flash in the pan, a kiss of heat, and they love some smoke. so i got my barbecue out. i love to have bacon with my sprouts (and project bacon backers have my bacon and sprout “yakitori” recipe to play with for christmas). these lucky sprouts got to share their plate with some ‘nduja, and some hazelnuts on top for a little extra pleasure (some toasted breadcrumbs would work really well too0. ‘nduja is that firey spreadable sausage from calabria, as much chilli as pork as fat. it is terrific and it goes so well with the stout sprouts. smoked sprouts with ‘nduja and hazelnuts continue reading spain, travelling three essential galician restaurants for food lovers you will find much pleasure in the bars and local restaurants of galicia. you might have noticed that in other parts of spain there are many galician restaurants too, usually opened by migrants from there. galicia is beautiful but making a living there traditionally has been hard, so many moved abroad to work or to other parts of spain. galician food is deservedly popular from steaming bowls of caldo gallego (a wonderful soup with potatoes, greens, chorizo, beans and often a ham broth) to polpo a la gallega (tender slow cooked octopus, sliced and served over boiled potato, with smoky paprika), empanada gallega (a closed pastry tart, filled with tuna, peppers, tomato, garlic) and for sweet torta de santiago (an almond cake traditionally served to pilgrims as they finish their camino de santiago). with it all you can have the local albariño wine, served traditionally from a bowl. continue reading page 1 of 481234»102030...last » get email updates we can email you when there is new posts! email address recipe & travel videos daily on snapchat add me on snapchat press one of britain’s 500 most influential people (according to the sunday times / debrett’s january 2014) best food blog, observer food monthly awards, october 2011 eat like a girl: the cookbook! facebook facebook korean (ish!) beer and gojuchang braised beef how to make kimchi pancakes (kimchijeon) bristol guide: where to eat, drink and stay masala fries and a perfect fried egg learning to ski in morzine in the french alps porcini congee with soy cured egg yolk where to eat, drink and stay in perth, australia rhubarb and coconut custard where to eat and drink in les gets in the french alps a culinary road trip from perth to margaret river follow via rss rss - posts rss - comments instagram eatlikeagirl   copyright eat like a girl 2006 - 2016
