(and yes, pi is that number 3.14159265). as with pi not being an actual pie, this is not just any other pie. (bear with me). this pie is gorgeous. every recipe i share with you here has to be worth it, something that brings a ray of sunshine to your table and cheers your day. it has to be something that i loved and this is particularly deserving. continue reading cooking, curry how to make a chicken curry pie when is a pie not a pie? and why do people get so mad about it? surely pastry meeting another gorgeous thing can only be celebrated, but no, people feel very strongly about this. pie fascism is real. which brings me on to pie rage. people aren’t happy with people not encasing a pie filling in pastry and calling it a pie. but folks, it is, and even if you feel it isn’t, feel free to surround this gorgeous chicken curry filling with pastry. i made this pie two ways, entirely enclosed in shortcrust pastry top and bottom, and with a puff pastry top, no bottom. i prefer the puff pastry lid. continue reading cooking, eggs, soup how to make castilian garlic soup (sopa castellana) i took enormous pleasure dunking lots of bread in my soup when i was a child. in advance of eating it, lots of bread, sometimes killing the soup in the process. i occasionally ended up with a disappointing bowl of flavoured soggy bread. castilian garlic soup is the perfect soup for people who love to dunk bread in their soup. it is perfectly balanced, the bread has absorbed the flavours and then yielded to everything, this soup is the ultimate bowl of comfort. one of, at any rate. i first had this soup at botin in madrid, spain. a prelude to my meal of roast suckling pig, which is what i had come to try. garlic soup though? lets give that a bash too. what arrived was a bowl of soup rich with bread, stringy egg and a punchy broth. i loved it, and i have had it many times since. where to eat in madrid: roast suckling pig at botín continue reading cooking, pork lemon and paprika yogurt pork skewers simplicity and time often make the best dishes. i had a couple of pork chops to use up and i wanted to do something tasty with them. the chops were from the shoulder and were marbled beautifully. i knew that the meat would be gorgeous slow cooked, and that they would also be perfect cooked on a skewer. a long marinade would make them tender and the fat would make them moist and delicious. i wanted spice and colour. i settled on this simple dish. i have a fierce hot paprika from budapest which when combined with lemon and yogurt made a perfect simple dish for lunch today. a writing day that demanded all of my time and energy (yes, that bacon book! nearly finished. i will write a book on the writing of it some day). continue reading canada, travelling western newfoundland: a lighthouse picnic & hiking gros morne when the guardian asked me to contribute to their piece on the best travel experiences of 2016, i didn’t have to think too hard about what i wanted to write about. i had some wonderful travel experiences last year, many were unusual, most were delicious, all in some way enriched my life and taught me something. that is why i love to travel, it feeds and nourishes me. one place unleashed my heart and refreshed my head. it reminded me that simplicity is best and that i should really get out and about (in terms of exercise) a lot more. that place was western newfoundland. continue reading cooking, pasta, seafood saffron gnocchetti sardi (malloreddus) & squid ragu on a grey day (and isn’t it so grey now?), saffron on your plate can brighten your heart as well as your dinner plate. golden yellow and joyful, delicious too. sure it is expensive, but it is used sparingly, and it is always worth having some in your cupboard. this grey weather is tough, it needs sunshine, however we find it. continue reading breakfast, brunch, cooking the best overnight raised coconut waffles it is waffle season in my kitchen again. often in colder days, waffle season is strictly dictated only by my mood and my desire to have waffles. it is a season because my waffle maker lives on top of my fridge, and my fridge is in my hallway for my kitchen is tiny (lets write that big), and my only permanent kitchen counter kit is my mixer and my food processor. everything else lives in the hall and comes in briefly when needed. (yes, far from a perfect system, but it almost works, for now). my waffle maker, like my toasted sandwich maker, only comes in occasionally. this is because when i start to make them i start a flurry of obsession where i will eat little else for a bit until i realise that this-must-stop and i retire them to their hiding place, away from my obsessive waffle desires. continue reading cooking, korean korean (ish!) beer and gojuchang braised beef i couldn’t resist bringing some more korean flavours to your table, with this gorgeous braised beef dish. there is intense pleasure in braising beef, especially in winter. braised beef itself becomes a perfect ingredient, i make it in big batches and use it for brunch, in pies, or stick it on top of some smashed crisped baked potatoes, or rice. braised beef is better again using flavours and textures which confer on it depth and richness. gojuchang, korean pepper paste that is made with bright korean red pepper, glutinous rice, soybeans and salt, fermented together resulting in a bright red paste that is flavour packed and a wonderful ingredient. it is just hot enough and it is round, giving all it touches a depth of flavour, punchy heat and gorgeousness. it is a pantry staple in my kitchen and saviour of many a tired evening. continue reading breakfast, brunch, cooking, eggs, korean how to make kimchi pancakes (kimchijeon) some mornings need a slice of joy, many recently. for me, that is almost always related to an egg, and frequently some spice. all eggs require something to dip in their glorious yolk and disrupt it. is there any better sauce than a runny egg? and any simpler one? i love korean flavours and i always have kimchi in my fridge. usually homemade but sometimes shop bought (you can buy it in any asian food store and most delis). many experimental ones. kimchi is kimchi is kimchi. kimchi is glorious. (for those of you yet to discover it, it is chilli fermented cabbage with a variety of things, usually garlic, ginger , spring onions, something sweet like asian pear or carrot, and lots of wonderful korean red pepper, gochugaru). continue reading travelling, uk bristol guide: where to eat, drink and stay colourful and hilly, dotted with street art and that famous suspension bridge, bristol has a great energy. known for its buzzing cultural scene, bristol is also packed with independent restaurants, bars and cafes, the eating and drinking options are surprising for a city of its size. of course, there are the chains as with everywhere, but you can comfortably avoid them. bristol is a creative city and this is reflected everywhere. continue reading brunch, cooking, eggs, potatoes, spice, vegetarian masala fries and a perfect fried egg it has just started snowing in london. snow! i am hiding inside under my duvet while i work, with the heating on. i need carbs and spice and a perfect egg with a runny yolk. masala fries are in my mind a lot recently, not just because they are delicious and so satisfying, but also because my corner shop has started stocking them in their freezer. i see them every time i walk out of the shop. they are so easy to make at home, and as with most things, all the better for it. today was the day that i would make them. continue reading france, travelling learning to ski in morzine in the french alps i wasn’t one of those kids that went on skiing holidays, nor have i been one of those adults. i love winter and i adore being in the snow breathing in the gorgeous crisp air. i love snowmobiles and husky rides, frozen rivers and puddles shattered into ice. i love crunching along, my feet sinking in as i walk. i like my face feeling cold and the rest of me toasty warm as i wander about. ice fishing is fun (especially when you catch something). but skiing or snowboarding had never appealed. i am risk averse and not overly enamoured with sports (my sport of choice is dancing, although i used to be quite good at trampolining in university for a while surprisingly!). i quite like to relax with a book and take it all in gently over a glass of hot wine. continue reading breakfast, brunch, cooking, eggs porcini congee with soy cured egg yolk i have been on a porcini kick since i was in france last month, specifically since i had a cep fondue (cep and porcini are one and the same thing). i prefer the word porcini, so let’s use that. porcini are a magical little thing. they confer a depth of flavour to any dish. something of the woods and something rich, which when combined with soy sauce reaches a throaty gorgeous rumble. throw a homemade chicken stock in the mix and you have something wonderful. i fancied trying the combination in that eastern wonder dish, congee. continue reading australia, travelling where to eat, drink and stay in perth, australia perth sits on the edge of australia, it feels like the edge of the world with the nearest large city adelaide being 2,104km away. this adds to the charm, it is refreshingly laid back and there is much to do. perth stretches along the coastline, and so it doesn’t feel big or overwhelming. as with other australian cities that i have visited (melbourne, sydney), there is a thriving and exciting food culture here. it may be the most isolated city in the world, but it is attracting impressive culinary talent and there are many new restaurants and bars. as with all my food research trips, everywhere is researched thoroughly and only the restaurants that i rate and that cut above the others make the list. enjoy! perth is a fun city and there are lots of great places to eat. also in this series: a culinary road trip from perth to margaret river where to eat, drink and stay in fremantle a postcard from western australia (through a food lens) continue reading cooking, sweet treats rhubarb and coconut custard it was one of those days, i just needed some rhubarb and custard. i adored it as a child, usually a huge bowl of rhubarb and a decent dollop of custard on top. today i reversed that with a bowl of homemade coconut custard and some poached yorkshire rhubarb on top. because i can, and because the custard was gorgeous. rhubarb and custard whisks me to childhood with every bite. i loved custard, usually whipped from bird’s powder or ushered from a carton (no judgement – i loved it). then in school, with the advance of compulsory home economics lessons (i do believe that every school should have them) i discovered real custard. made slowly over gentle heat. pouring custard, baked custard, and baked apples with custard. eyes wide open, eggs, sugar and milk in gorgeous alchemy. i have been hooked ever since. continue reading france, travelling where to eat and drink in les gets in the french alps les gets is gorgeous small town in the french alps. perfect for ski fanatics, and also people like me who love the calm of winter and the snow. i prefer to be inside looking out from a great table, and so i explored the best eating and drinking options that les gets has to offer. les gets has a lovely laid back charm with slopes on both sides, and many restaurants and bars overlooking or next to the pistes. les gets partners excellently with morzine being just a few kilometres away with cross country ski routes and easy access. there is also a ski pass for both morzine and les gets, so it makes sense to do both. in terms of what you eat and drink, i have got you covered. all tried and tested with the eat like a girl seal of approval. see also: where to eat and drink in morzine in the french alps le bacchus continue reading australia, travelling a culinary road trip from perth to margaret river western australia is vast and diverse, it is perfect for a road trip. before i visited i imagined horizons filled orange soil and hot searing temperatures. what greeted me instead as i journeyed south from perth at the end of winter was moderate temperatures, lush greens, flowers and lots of vegetation, all hugging the ocean as we journeyed by, stopping to soak it up occasionally as we did. there are many options, the obvious choice for me was to drive to margaret river, a wine region just over 3 hours drive from perth, with some lovely pitstops along the way. there are wonderful beaches, great places to eat, limestone underground caves and you can go whale watching. the main reason you should go is the food and wine, and just to indulge in how gorgeous it all is. margaret river has 187 wineries and 215 vineyards (as counted in 2015). it is surrounded by the ocean on three sides without extreme seasons providing ideal conditions for producing wine. wineries mainly produce bordeaux style wines (semillon and sauvignon blanc blends are common as are cabernet sauvignon and shiraz), margaret river has been compared to bordeaux in a dry vintage. the reds are gentle. there are established producers like leeuwin estate (who produced their first commercial vintage in 1979) and newer ones like fraser gallop (whose first vintage was 2008). lots to explore and most tastings are free, if you fancy driving yourself winery to winery. continue reading page 1 of 471234»102030...last » get email updates we can email you when there is new posts!
