ham hock, watercress and beluga lentil soup

a hug in a bowl. easy, gorgeous and soothing. just what we all need this week. there will be lots of leftovers too for pie and toasties.

clams with chorizo, cavolo nero and cider

gorgeous simple and quick, this full flavoured dish is a perfect speedy supper. paprika gives it a little spice, and tomatoes brighten it up.

pumpkin and kale autumn minestre

november announces the start of soup season. pasta soups are some of my favourites, and this one combines some of the best seasonal ingredients with pasta joy.

(read more about sponsored content on eat like a girl). the food trucks of washington dc washington dc isn’t all politics and fine dining restaurants. there are more than 200 food trucks dishing up fantastic varied food that reflects the diverse population, and this is where you will find the locals lining up to eat. continue reading travelling, uk how to cook chicken balti (via shababs in birmingham) i have lived in london for 15 years, yet i have never been to birmingham just a couple of hours away. londoners are notorious for sticking just to london and it irked me that i was now doing the same (i am a londoner, after all!). so, this year i decided that i would make the effort to explore places nearby and not just foreign shores. the uk is very diverse and holds lots of interest for me. (and i have been trying, see my post on a sunny weekend in bournemouth & lunch at the pig on the beach from earlier this year). continue reading spain, travelling where to drink in barcelona: tavernas to a hidden cocktail bar i travelled to barcelona with jet2citybreaks who offer great hotel and flight city break packages. jet2 fly to el prat airport in barcelona which is a short hop from town and very handy for a city break. i wanted to explore barcelona from all angles, traditional to modern and budget to blowout. every recommendation is researched in advance and tried and tested by my demanding palate. you will love barcelona, and all of the wonderful things that you can eat and drink there. first in this series: barcelona eating guide: traditional to modern and budget to blowout. this is the second (and last). now that we know where to eat in barcelona, let’s focus on where to drink. barcelona has a terrific bar culture and it is a fun city. you will find plenty to satisfy, old school, contemporary and exciting. you will find a lot of gin. spain is the biggest gin market in the eu and the third largest in the world (doffs cap to spain!). they have lots of varieties and pour it freehand and generously in large glasses reminiscent of fish bowls. you must try some spanish gin when you are there too, one of my favourites is the nordes gin, fragrant of gentle sea breezes and crashing waves. continue reading spain, travelling barcelona eating guide: traditional to modern and budget to blowout i travelled to barcelona with jet2citybreaks who offer great hotel and flight city break packages. jet2 fly to el prat airport in barcelona which is a short hop from town and very handy for a city break. i wanted to explore barcelona from all edible angles, traditional to modern and budget to blowout. every recommendation is researched in advance and tried and tested by my demanding palate. i went on a food tour too. you will love barcelona, and all of the wonderful things that you can eat there. everyone loves barcelona, even contrarians like me. it seems like everyone has been, and if they haven’t, they want to go. an individual city, so much sets it apart from quirky gaudi architecture to the beautiful engraved pavement tiles, the most famous of which is the flor de barcelona pictured below. barcelona is a city that loves beauty and attracts artists, a bohemian place that is relaxed and fun and also very stylish. barcelona has the calm of the sea and beaches as well as a busy city centre lined with restaurants and bars. continue reading london milk lates: balham’s brunch gem opens for dinner (and it is good!) it is time to grip your oyster card tight and hop on the northern line to south london to take yourself to milk in balham. yes, even you north londoners with a fear of everything south of the river. (right? i mean i used to be a north londoner, but i did travel south!). a local café for me, but a london destination for brunch for many londoners. milk is one of the best cafés in london for both coffee and food, with a creative exciting menu and weekly specials (well documented on my instagram as i am a regular there). i am sure that milk has been on your list but you do need to start paying attention now as milk have raised their game with milk lates. continue reading australia, travelling where to eat, drink and stay in fremantle on a cold grey november day in london, let me whisk you to the sunny shores of fremantle in western australia. a city officially, but with the feeling of a laidback seaside town, fremantle has retained many beautiful old wooden buildings and while this may give it a quaint air, it is very much a contemporary lively place packed with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. there is a great market, open late, with lots of food options. beer lovers will love the selection of brewpubs and microbreweries. there are many reasons that fremantle should be your first stop in western australia, one important one is that fremantle is a relaxed spot that is close to the airport but not close enough that you can hear it. it was a tonic for my jet lag having flown in from london. continue reading cooking, soup ham hock, watercress and beluga lentil soup what a week. i needed a hug in a bowl, maybe ten. made gently in my quiet kitchen on a cosy day that needed healing, this ham hock, watercress and beluga lentil soup allowed me a half hour where i was immersed somewhere else, somewhere kinder, somewhere nurturing. the world feels unsafe now, and i worry for all of us, especially those already in terrifying situations. refugees, those living in poverty (many here in the uk), and minorities living in a place where people fear them. it makes no sense to me, and i am sure that many of you feel the way i do. we need to fight it, we need to make the world we live in a home for everyone. we need to think about how we do that. a world where we are afraid of other and violently opposed to them, is a world headed in a dangerous direction. a frightening place for all of us, even those blindly charging into it. refuge in a bowl of soup so i took brief refuge in cooking and in this bowl of soup. a soothing pot of broth with shreds of bright pink smoked ham and pops of black beluga lentils, holding firm in the face of the luxurious ham broth with some watercress seasoning and lightening it all. ham hock is perfect for this weather, a time for slow cooking (or cooking fast as i did this time, cooking this in my first pressure cooker, more on that soon). continue reading cooking, seafood, shellfish, sponsored clams with chorizo, cider and cavolo nero this post is sponsored by leisure cookers and is part of a series of two posts exploring the possibilities for home cooks in seafood cookery. you can read more about my thoughts and ideas on seafood cookery, particularly with regard to oysters and razor clams on the leisure website. you can also see my razor clam and oyster motoyaki recipe with gojuchang and lime on eat like a girl. (read more about sponsored content on eat like a girl). clams are my new jam. not even new, i have always loved them, but i have embraced cooking them even more recently and relished the speed with which i can make a full flavoured lunch or supper at home. clams are easy, quick, inexpensive and very nutritious clams are easy to source and inexpensive. they are a complete protein and are low in fat. clams are high in vitamins and minerals (particularly iron and vitamin b12). you can cook a clam dish in 10 minutes, and they are receptive of all flavours. i love to make curry clams too, bathing them in a golden yellow turmeric and coconut broth with lots of garlic, galangal, a pinch of chilli and lemongrass. (i should share that recipe soon!). continue reading cooking, pasta, soup pumpkin & kale autumn minestre (soup!) right, where were we? november! that is right. as i look out of my window it is sunny with a sharp blue sky, a light wind is teasing the leaves, bot h golden brown and stubbornly green. regardless of how unseasonally nice it is, november is still all about fires (if you are lucky enough to have one, i don’t, but i have my big green egg), cheese toasties (so many variations) and soups, stews and rich ragus with supple slicks of fresh pasta. i always love a pop of fire within too in the form of sparks of chilli or a smear of chilli oil. i can’t bear anything flat, i need some brightness. i tend to turn to italian soups right now, specifically minestre, a chunky soup with vegetables, pasta or rice, and beans often. you will have heard of minestrone (a version of, which must have a thickening vegetable in it), and one of my favourites, pasta e fagiole. i turn often to pasta e patate too (pasta with potatoes, stay with me, it is awesome) and a version that i like to make with pumpkin. the basis of these are a good stock and a good pasta. i like to go off piste and irish-ise it with a lick of cream too. off piste can be a happy place, i like to go there. continue reading cooking, shellfish, sponsored gojuchang and lime oyster and razor clam motoyaki this gojuchang and lime oyster and razor clam motoyaki recipe is a recipe that i developed for leisure cookers, who wanted me to create a seafood recipe that would be eaten at a feast, which was part of a series of guardian reader events. i also demo’d the recipe for those that attended, which was fun. the recipe went down very well, and i am delighted to share it with you here now. i usually post my own photos, but leisure cookers had uyen luu shoot these for their site also and they were too gorgeous not to share. this post is sponsored by leisure cookers (read more about sponsored content on eat like a girl). that is a mouthful right? and not just as a title but as bite. a gorgeous one. cooked oysters are hugely underrated and speedy. i love to give them a blanket coating of flavoured mayonnaise motoyaki style as is popular in japanese cooking. i apply the technique to razor clams also, like squid meets clam, tender and open to a bit of spice. shellfish are healthy and quick, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and minerals like zinc, copper, iron and magnesium (mussels have as much iron as liver). they are low in calories too, a dozen oysters contains less than 100 calories and only 0.2g of fat. i go first for the flavour though, all of the benefits are a feel good bonus, and a reason that i choose them more often now for speedy suppers and quick weekend lunches. continue reading australia, travelling a postcard from western australia (through a food lens) have you ever been to perth? or margaret river? i have been to australia a number of times, but never out west. a vast swathe of australia, in parts scorched orange with iron ore sands and sunshine. what surprised me was how lush and green western australia became the more we travelled south. it was early spring and that will change, but i was reminded that travel is best when you leave your expectations at the airport and remain open to whatever may come. we started at fremantle, and i finished there too. a pretty town outside perth and on the sea, it is slow paced and well preserved with a thriving food and drink culture. from fremantle you can travel by boat to rottnest island, an island famous for pristine beaches and quokkas (small and relatively tame marsupials that densely populate the island). the name comes from rat nest in dutch, as they mistook the quokkas for rats when they first found it. continue reading cooking, poultry, soup chicken, corn and chipotle chowder autumn came early for me via a trip to western australia, where winter was reluctant to leave. unseasonally long, the locals were shook, i still managed to get sunburned in the warm spells in between winters death rattle. even before then i was craving autumn, my senses needing the seasons to change when it was 30 deg c + in london in mid september. so, i made chicken, corn and chipotle chowder the second things started to get cooler. trinities of ingredients are recurring themes in my cooking. i like simple food with core ingredients tweaked with store cupboard favourites. soffrito is a base for many things (garlic, chilli, onions); cheese tomato & onion are always glorious (with a splash of worcester sauce and some salt, a little chilli); pumpkin, chickpea and spinach (whatever way you like, wonderful in a curry); bacon, lettuce and tomato (just so!); chicken, mayonnaise and bread (a little tarragon and lots of butter). three ingredients is enough for all of them to sing and dance and blend. continue reading cooking, eggs cheesy scrambled egg on tomato toast cheesy scrambled eggs! yes! let’s do this. i adore eggs. any egg, all eggs, cooked any way. graceful in marshmallow, indulgent in mayonnaise, gorgeous in hollandaise, perfect as fried egg, luxurious when poached just so. i love an omelette, cooked with speed in a puddle of butter over a high flame, almost as much as i love scrambled egg with a lick of cream, cooked gently and teased into existence. soft curds, folded over one another in relaxed fashion. continue reading random making marzipan in toledo i haven’t always love marzipan. in fact, i hated it before i even knew what it was. my first shocking bite was as a child. one morning when i got up to watch my raft of saturday morning cartoons i spied a gorgeous wrapped hamper of sweets, shaped like fruits and brightly coloured. shiny even. i took a bite and was horrified. what was that? the shock of my expectations of a sweet meeting a more savoury flavour, something very intense. a flavour that adults like and children don’t, well children like me at least. marzipan even came hidden in my treasured christmas cake. christmas cake made with tea, which my grandmother made for us every year, and beautiful sweet icing on top. icing like a gentle snowy landscape, covering a shocking layer of yellow marzipan below. i would nibble the icing off, delicately remove the layer of marzipan putty and cast it aside, before devouring the cake. continue reading kitchen garden, sponsored how to plant your own easy edible flower garden this recipe is the fourth in a series of four that was written in partnership with wyevale garden centres who sponsored this post.
