(comments?) amd promises preview of summer of radeon on february 28 posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 21:51:43 cet by thomas de maesschalck amd gave a little more details about its upcoming capsaicin & cream event, which is scheduled for february 28 at 10:30 am pst. the event will be livestreamed and promises to provide a glimpse into the "summer of radeon and beyond". it's not entirely sure what amd means with a summer of radeon, they will most likely show off more of the vega architecture but the invitation also mentions they'll show previews of the summer's hottest pc games. the first vega cards are rumored to arrive in may so that's one month before summer officially starts, unless the cards arrive later than expected. capsaicin is the legendary component in chili peppers that adds that indescribably addictive kick to spicy foods. it elevates your favorite meal and propels your taste buds into overdrive. we love capsaicin because it reminds us of the magic that game and vr developers craft every day when they turn raw code into exciting, memorable and addicting experiences. on february 28, kick off your gdc with an exclusive glimpse into the summer of radeon and beyond! our feature-packed show will be highlighted by the hottest new graphics and vr technologies propelling the game industry forward – with previews of the summer’s hottest pc games and vr experiences from the biggest names in the business. amd’s capsaicin livestream kicks off at 10:30am pt and you won’t want to miss it. be sure to come back here for the livestream. (comments?) gpu shipments remain strong as gaming boom continues posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 16:46:20 cet by thomas de maesschalck the quarterly graphics chip report from jon peddie research has arrived. the company found that in q4 2016 the pc market returned to its normal seasonality curve, this basically means that q3 is the peak in terms of shipments, with q4 being flat to a little up. the first quarter of the year is typically flat to a little down and q2 is the through;. the data indicates shipments were flat versus the previous quarter, with amd increasing 10.49 percent, nvidia increasing 9.52 percent and intel decreasing 4.01 percent. in terms of marketshare, amd increased 1.4 percent and nvidia increased 1.5 percent. overall these numbers show the general direction of the market but because it includes processors with integrated graphics it doesn't tell us a lot about the discrete graphics card. a more detailed report that focuses specifically on the discrete graphics card market is expected very soon. the gaming market was the bright spot as especially sales of high-end gpu continue to do well. quick highlights: amd’s overall unit shipments increased 10.49% quarter-to-quarter, intel’s total shipments decreased 4.01% from last quarter, and nvidia’s increased 9.52%. the attach rate of gpus (includes integrated and discrete gpus) to pcs for the quarter was 141% which was down 5.52% from last quarter. discrete gpus were in 35.92% of pcs, which is up 1.23%. the overall pc market increased 3.96% quarter-to-quarter, and decreased 3.55% year-to-year. desktop graphics add-in boards (aibs) that use discrete gpus increased 5.60% from last quarter. q4'16 saw an increase in tablet shipments from last quarter. (comments?) thermaltake adds hsf and watercooling kit for ryzen posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 16:16:02 cet by thomas de maesschalck two more products announcements from thermaltake. the company jumps onboard the ryzen hype train by marketing its new contac silent 12 hsf and water 3.0 riing rgb all-in-one liquid cooling kit as ryzen compatible, but both models also support intel cpus and older amd sockets. the hsf doesn't look that exciting, it's a tower model with four direct-touch copper heatpipes and an aluminium fin array. airflow is provided by a 120mm pwm fan and the cooler is designed with non-interference in mind. it will ship in march. thermaltake contac silent 12 is a budget cpu cooler with excellent cooling performance, featuring a 120mm pwm controlled fan, high airflow fan blades, long life hydraulic bearing, low-noise operation as well as non-interference cooling design. the contac silent 12 supports all the latest intel and amd cpu socket. the watercooling kit arrives in april and will come in 240mm and 360mm radiator versions. the novelty is that it comes with three riing 12 led rgb 256 colors radiator fans, which are controlled via the included smart fan controller. designed to meet the demands of enthusiasts, thermaltake releases the latest water 3.0 riing rgb series, a rgb 256 colors all-in-one liquid cooler with triple 120mm powerful high static pressure fans and a smart fan controller. choose from: 240mm and 360mm highly-efficient radiators to control any escalating cpu temperatures. the new all-in-one lcs water 3.0 riing rgb is designed to exceed user expectations. a self-contained fan controller can switch between 5 led modes including solid colors of red, blue, white, green or disable and cycle through 256 colors. play/pause functions allow users to cycle colors (color remains unchanged even after the pc has been turned off or rebooted) with speed control options reduce noise even more all from your fingertips. (comments?) thermaltake slaps rgb leds onto cpu waterblock posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 16:01:51 cet by thomas de maesschalck thermaltake showcases its new pacific w4 rgb cpu water block, what makes this one special is that it has a round shape with a rgb led-backlit edge. the leds can be controlled via the included lighting controller, you can choose between various light effect and adjust the brightness. the product supports most modern desktop processors and should be compatible with socket am4, even though it's not listed on the specification page. availability is slated for march. the pacific w4 rgb comes with a special engineered led light that can be switched among a 256 rgb cycle, a 7 static colors mode (blue, green red, white, orange, yellow and purple), and a led off mode. the brightness is also adjustable. most importantly, the controller is constructed with a built-in memory function, saving the color applied and insuring the same color selection every time you boot your pc. anti-corrosion design with mirror-finished cu base manufactured with thermaltake’s highest quality standards, the pacific w4 rgb’s specially machined copper base has an absolute mirror finish with anti-corrosive nickel plating that provides exceptional heat transfer and anti-corrosion protection for the most demanding use conditions. optimized 0.15mm micro-channel structure the pacific w4 rgb applies a compact form factor that features 0.15mm micro-channel fin construction for optimal clearance and extreme heat dissipation. (comments?) benchmark leaks of intel atom c3955 16-core chip posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 15:51:04 cet by thomas de maesschalck some data leaked about the intel atom c3955, an upcoming 16-core "denverton" processor that seems to run at 2.1ghz. it has 16mb l2 cache, so 1mb l2 cache per core, and will have a fairly low tdp as this part is designed for nas and other server applications. this is probably one of the fastest chips in the denverton lineup. serve the home found some sisoft sandra 2015 results of the 16-core atom c3955 and compared the results with other chips to get a sense of how it scores. the site also notes that this 16-core chip is likely delayed a couple of months due to the clock issue with the intel atom c2000 series. (comments?) unreal engine 4.15 adds afr for nvidia sli and hdr support posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 15:34:25 cet by thomas de maesschalck epic games rolled out version 4.15 of its unreal engine. several major new features as well as lots of little enhancements were made, including support for the nintendo switch, up to 50 percent faster compile times, alternate frame rendering (afr) support for nvidia sli, support for hdr display output, monoscopic far field rendering for mobile vr and lots of other things. a full changelog with lots of photos and videos can be found over here. unreal engine 4.15 includes significant gains in overall stability, enhancements to developer workflows, and improvements to runtime performance resulting in greater efficiency during development and superior end user experiences after release. compile times for programmers are drastically reduced - by as much as 50%! reloading content while unreal editor is running, reroute nodes in materials, a new blendspace editor, new mathematics blueprint nodes, and more contribute to an even more streamlined development process in this release. for those looking to squeeze out every drop of performance, cooking blueprints to c++ native code is no longer an experimental feature, the texture streaming system has gotten an overhaul, and alternate frame rendering with nvidia sli gives a boost on high end systems. the cinematics and animation pipelines continue to strengthen with animation blending now possible in sequencer, linking animation curves to bones for culling in lods, and modifying curves in animation blueprints with the modify curve node. level sequences can now be embedded in actor blueprints, and early support for level sequence components is available for early adopters. developing for nintendo switch is available as experimental as part of the platform improvements. gps data is now accessible on ios and android using the new location services. also on ios, streaming audio and remote notifications are fully supported. monoscopic far field rendering is an option for mobile vr platforms, hdr display output is available in an experimental state, and the ability to use playstation vr aim controllers is also added. (comments?) cisco setting aside $125 million for intel atom issues? posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 15:26:22 cet by thomas de maesschalck earlier this month there were reports about a "clock component" issue that's bricking networking products from cisco. the company refuses to go into the details and will not name the company that supplied this chip, but it's widely believed that intel's atom c2000 is the most likely culprit. now we hear cisco is setting aside a reserve of $125 million to deal with this issue: cisco cfo kelly kramer said the networking giant doesn't anticipate any material revenue impact from a faulty clock component issue inside several of cisco's popular product lines that causes the system to eventually fail. "we've have had an issue from a supplier come out and we did book a reserve for $125 million to cover that," said kramer, during cisco's second fiscal quarter earnings call on wednesday night. "we always and continue to stand by our customers through any situation like this … this is a failure rate that will happen overtime, but we're working with our customers to work through that. we're not anticipating any impact from that from a top line perspective." a webpage with more details about cisco's clock signal component issue can be found here. other network gear makers are also investigation the issue as there are indications that it's not just limited to cisco. (comments?) so microsoft just delayed the february patch tuesday to march 14 posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 13:22:57 cet by thomas de maesschalck two days ago i wrote microsoft delayed patch tuesday due to an unspecified last-minute issue. we still don't know the reason why the software giant postponed its monthly security update rollout for the first time ever, and much to our surprise microsoft just announced these updates will be delivered as part of the march update on tuesday, march 14, 2017. among other things, the february patches were suppose to fix a security flaw in microsoft's smb file-sharing protocol. this bug is exploited in the wild but so far there's no evidence it can be used to compromise a system: smb should, of course, be blocked at the firewall, so the risk of remote exploitation of the smb flaw should be relatively low. it's currently believed to only permit crashing of affected systems, so while it's inconvenient, it should not lead to system penetration or compromise. nonetheless, being forced to wait another month for a fix for something so publicly known is an uncomfortable position to be in. as stated above, there's no official word about why microsoft made this unusual decision. zd net's microsoft watcher mary jo foley heard some speculation that there may be a sudden issue with microsoft's build system but the company refuses to go into the details. (comments?) asrock x370 killer sli/ac and ab350 gaming k4 motherboard photos leak posted on friday, february 17 2017 @ 13:08:06 cet by thomas de maesschalck videocardz published photos of two upcoming asrock motherboards for the amd ryzen platform, you can view them over here. this includes the asrock x370 killer sli/ac and the asrock ab350 gaming k4. one of the interesting things is that both motherboards come with two m.2 slots, which seems rare among the x370 boards we've seen so far. the site also reveals a couple of motherboards plus packaging of boards from gigabyte/aorus, biostar, and asus at this page.
