dustyfile.comthe digital notebook of keith andrews enter email address here along the way 2dec16 this week of adventure began with chapel on sunday morning. the first sunday of december begins the christmas season. the front of the chapel included a new welcome slide to invite people in to worship during this next month. tuesday morning, as we do every weekday morning, was started at 0630 with our morning pt (physical training) formation. it is winter, so every soldiers wears his or her cap and gloves, jacket and pants. on wednesday evening, i spent some time writing in one of my favorite restaurants. it was an enjoyable night, but it kept me out later than usual. our section christmas party and farewell dinner occurred on thursday before people began taking christmas leave trips and one katusa soldier begins to out-process the unit. i was blessed to receive a wonderful seoul starbucks mug from my secret santa. it was a heartfelt gift from another katusa who knew i would need to have that mug before i left korea in the summer. enjoying our quarterly katusa led training day-where our katusa soldiers teach us a little bit about korea, we visited the seoul city wall. the city wall surrounds the ancient city of seoul and gives beautiful views of the city down below. the temperatures were in the twenties as we began our day, but warmed up as we climbed the mountain wall built in the 1390’s. this was a rare experience that we enjoyed, thanks to the planning of our korean katusa soldiers. it was a great way to end the week. share this:facebookpinteresttwitteremailprintdecember 2, 2016 leave a commentblogging in restaurants i was able to go out last night into the city. i don’t often go outside the army post during the week, but last night i had some errands to run and decided to grab a bite to eat while i was out. because of the time difference in the states, monica was waking up while i was finishing up my day. i sent her a text with a photo that said: “blogging at the pizza place”. here in korea, many of the restaurants have free wi-fi, while others have paid wi-fi hot spots. the message to customers is that you and your computers are welcome here. while i typically use these hot spots with my ipad, i decided to bring my computer along and write last night’s blog post while i was out. i found that the cozy little restaurant i was in provided a great place to sit and write. there was little distraction, because once i had finished my pizza, there was nothing else to do. as in many of the restaurants and coffee shops, the music was low and mellow so i was able to focus. it was a nice night to spend writing and i can see why so many people choose coffee shops as their favorite place to write. because i am aware that the korean restaurants are typically welcoming of computers, i did not feel uncomfortable if i had stayed too long. in fact, i saw a college student camped out in the same restaurant a couple of night ago, so this helped me feel more comfortable about staying awhile. this has been my biggest barrier to bringing a laptop into restaurants in the us, so it is nice to be able try blogging in a restaurant while i am in this technologically rich country. share this:facebookpinteresttwitteremailprintdecember 1, 2016 leave a commentbring back the steeples several years ago, there was a movement in america to take the cross out of the churches and, most certainly, take away the steeple. the argument was that the cross could be offensive to some people, which to me is an argument from the pit of hell. of course, some would find it offensive! the bible says: “for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.” (1 corinthians 1:118, kjv) but, many times when we quote that verse, we forget the very important second part of the verse which says “but unto us which are saved it is the power of god.” one recent afternoon, i was walking along a new road, when i looked up and saw a steeple amidst a large mountain in the background. i was instantly reminded of the hope of christ through his death on a cross. i am often reminded of the hope of christ as i travel around korea, for there are many churches with steeples or simply buildings with crosses on top. each one of these buildings is telling the world that inside the building is a meeting place of a church. it is a joy to see. it brings me hope and encouragement. it reminds me that god is always over watching me and caring for me. i hope the next generation of americans will build the next churches, unashamed of the cross. i pray that they will make the cross a focal point of everything they do. i pray that they will learn that the cross is not something to cast off as immaterial. it is time to bring back the steeples.      share this:facebookpinteresttwitteremailprintnovember 30, 2016 1 commentnext page » connect  categories 196th ashc comic books devotional writting dusty files sermons load more...follow on instagram currently reading keith's bookshelf: currently-reading the rise and fall of the third reich: a history of nazi germany by william l. shirer tagged: currently-reading how to write short: word craft for fast times by roy peter clark tagged: currently-reading watching baseball smarter: a professional fan's guide for beginners, semi-experts, and deeply serious geeks by zack hample tagged: currently-reading preaching god's word: a hands-on approach to preparing, developing, and delivering the sermon by terry g. carter tagged: currently-reading and christian-non-fiction watching baseball smarter by zack hample tagged: currently-reading share book reviews and ratings with keith, and even join a book club on goodreads. @chaplainandrews on twitter tweets by @chaplainandrews archives archives select month december 2016 (2) november 2016 (30) october 2016 (30) september 2016 (26) august 2016 (15) july 2016 (26) june 2016 (30) may 2016 (30) april 2016 (30) march 2016 (31) february 2016 (29) january 2016 (31) december 2015 (31) november 2015 (30) october 2015 (31) september 2015 (30) august 2015 (31) july 2015 (31) june 2015 (30) may 2015 (31) april 2015 (30) march 2015 (31) february 2015 (28) january 2015 (31) december 2014 (1) november 2014 (2) october 2014 (5) september 2014 (5) august 2014 (3) july 2014 (1) may 2014 (2) march 2014 (3) february 2014 (1) january 2014 (21) december 2013 (4) november 2013 (18) october 2013 (31) september 2013 (13) august 2013 (7) july 2013 (12) june 2013 (2) april 2013 (1) march 2013 (1) february 2013 (8) january 2013 (24) december 2012 (20) november 2012 (28) october 2012 (22) september 2012 (29) august 2012 (14) june 2012 (1) may 2012 (1) april 2012 (1) march 2012 (2) february 2012 (5) january 2012 (2) december 2011 (3) november 2011 (6) october 2011 (1) september 2011 (11) august 2011 (6) july 2011 (8) june 2011 (12) may 2011 (13) april 2011 (13) march 2011 (13) february 2011 (12) january 2011 (15) december 2010 (13) november 2010 (16) october 2010 (11) september 2010 (14) august 2010 (20) july 2010 (7) june 2010 (5) may 2010 (11) april 2010 (8) february 2010 (5) january 2010 (1) december 2009 (10) november 2009 (20) october 2009 (26) september 2009 (22) august 2009 (17) july 2009 (14) june 2009 (9) may 2009 (11) april 2009 (22) march 2009 (25) february 2009 (22) january 2009 (24) december 2008 (23) november 2008 (23) october 2008 (28) september 2008 (14) august 2008 (26) july 2008 (29) june 2008 (34) may 2008 (21) april 2008 (26) march 2008 (9) february 2008 (34) january 2008 (14) december 2007 (23) november 2007 (13) october 2007 (14) september 2007 (5) august 2007 (1) july 2007 (1) june 2007 (17) may 2007 (18) april 2007 (25) march 2007 (30) february 2007 (27) january 2007 (29) december 2006 (22) november 2006 (22) october 2006 (19) september 2006 (20) august 2006 (15) july 2006 (15) june 2006 (18) dustyfile.com represents the views and messages of ch(maj) keith j. andrews, and does not represent the views of my commanders, the us army chaplain corps, nor the u.s. army, and seeks to uphold all opsec principles thus containing no operational or official information.
