now it’s official – ‘people who make lists are more productive than their counterparts’. i have just cut out the article stating the same from the times of india, for the purpose of showing it to my dear hubby, thus proving a point about ‘lists,’ without having to use my fists. he never misses a chance to make fun of my lists, which according to him are always as long as schindler’s list. maybe so, but like the schindler’s list of jews, my lists of chores too are for a good cause. his list saved lives, mine time. i diligently update diaries and diaries with daily scribbles, writings not as poignant or touching as the contents of ‘diary of anne frank’; but with wearisome lists of things to be done. these lists are usually long like rapunzel’s hair, often boring like an aimless day, important like an indo-pak peace treaty, tedious like an unprepared exam… but in the end have to be dealt with and resolved like any agatha christie murder mystery.
having said all that, it is because of these lists that i manage to get a majority of things done and that too in less time. not having to take out time to remember, recollect or having to mentally juggle all the things to be done and missing out on quite a few in the process; does save both time and neuro resources. this in turn makes us calm, relaxed and efficient. lists tidy up our perennially messy minds and help clear out our life’s unkempt pathways to success… thus making our journey a lot more happier and easier.
now, wasting all that ‘saved time’ making more & more lists and fervently searching for that truant diary (containing those lists), is a totally different story… & having your family members totally convinced that all that ‘saved neuro’ resources is the reason behind your neurosis, is indeed a tragedy.
mornings, after a hurried kapaal bhati and ten minutes on the cross trainer, i get started with the list for the day, which mostly continues through the day, into the night. now that is a regular day. so you can imagine the length of the list and duration of my list making when i decide to host a party, that too an army one. for the knowledge of my civilian friends, let me tell you that in the army we always believe in walking the extra mile… mostly to digest the food and shed the calories that we have managed to pile on at our ‘larger than life’ parties (well deserved after a day of upholding our national flag and safeguarding our mother land), which are a regular feature of an army life. our starters are enough to put a permanent stop to jughead’s hunger pangs. so when we get to the end of the party after going through starters,  appetizers, mains, desserts and lists for the same; our souls are ready to desert our bodies and diaries are left over flowing… for sheer lack of space.
before you get the idea that food alone is the hero of our parties, let me tell you that our parties are multi starrers. the ambience, decor, music, arrangements, entertainment… all play pivotal roles. innovative ways of serving all that abundant food is also an important criteria. so today, although i am not going to take you through the entire party procedure, i will show you some unique tray arrangements to serve simple snacks. these are simple, organic arrangements, mostly inspired by nature.
                                                                             take a look…
so, after taking you through this tray fest, now it’s time for me to continue with my routine list, lest i forget what is to be done next, meanwhile you guys grab some rest.

H4 new year’s eve is something as a family we always look forward to. more than the ritual of bidding farewell to the old year with its trumps & dumps, five hundreds & thousands; or welcoming the new year with renewed hope & vigour… it is that yummy chunk of precious hours sandwiched between the two years – dressing up for the big night, grooving to the latest numbers, engaging in mindless games, gorging on good food & drinks, being together with your family & friends… basically having a jolly good time that we genuinely crave for.
we were indulging on this delectable slice of time on that pleasantly chilly eve of dec 31st, 2016 at rajendra sinhji institute in bangalore, just 10 metres away from brigade road where a huge crowd had gathered on the streets to enjoy the night to the fullest but shamefully ended up doing mass molests. the event cannot be labelled as city specific, it was mirroring the shameful incidents happening elsewhere/everywhere in/out of the country.
it must be the years of grooming, strict training, harsh punishments, tight security… the one thing an army establishment offers you extra on its menu compared to any other public places is a rare, elusive & priceless speciality – safety, more so for the fairer sex. oops… did i just say the word ‘sex’ aloud in a country where the mere mention of the word is a big ‘gandi baat’, like taking the name of ‘he who must not be named’ is a taboo in the harry potter series. by uttering the latter we invite evil, but by ignoring the former we invite such incidents.
the last two weeks saw newspapers, along with the outrage, overflowing with suggestions of how these assaults could be curbed. many of those suggestions made complete sense be it implementation of stricter laws, harsher punishments, tighter security, encouraging openness b/w the sexes, including gender education from primary school levels & such. if endorsed these will surely help in curbing the assaults. but until & unless women are looked upon as equals or considered as important as men, you can become the first female american president, but still be helpless at the hands of beedi peeke nukkad pe wait karne wala, to mouth gandi baat or to attempt gande things… & ultimately blame it on our modesty or lack of it.
men are the frankenstein monsters here… but the hands that feed these ‘raja betas’ anarchistic views are not all male. it is high time we women also take as much responsibility for these incidents as the men. till then we will be mouthing words of women power & giving speeches on liberation, all the while keeping a check on the length of our daughter’s dresses, the friends she hangs out with, her behaviour in public, the places she visits, the time she is supposed to be back… heartlessly clipping her wings & crippling her freedom all in the name of motherly love & concern.
let the government do its part & let us do our bit too. before we join our hands to bring about a revolution, let me beautify those lovely fingers with some delightful handcrafted rings . they were made using pom-poms, buttons, broken pendants, wedding cards, etc, etc.
ring-a-ring o’ roses… let’s ring the bell on such causes!!!

leave a comment a list in time saves ‘time’ october 23, 2016uncategorizedreshma      now it’s official – ‘people who make lists are more productive than their counterparts’. i have just cut out the article stating the same from the times of india, for the purpose of showing it to my dear hubby, thus proving a point about ‘lists,’ without having to use my fists. he never misses a chance to make fun of my lists, which according to him are always as long as schindler’s list. maybe so, but like the schindler’s list of jews, my lists of chores too are for a good cause. his list saved lives, mine time. i diligently update diaries and diaries with daily scribbles, writings not as poignant or touching as the contents of ‘diary of anne frank’; but with wearisome lists of things to be done. these lists are usually long like rapunzel’s hair, often boring like an aimless day, important like an indo-pak peace treaty, tedious like an unprepared exam… but in the end have to be dealt with and resolved like any agatha christie murder mystery.         having said all that, it is because of these lists that i manage to get a majority of things done and that too in less time. not having to take out time to remember, recollect or having to mentally juggle all the things to be done and missing out on quite a few in the process; does save both time and neuro resources. this in turn makes us calm, relaxed and efficient. lists tidy up our perennially messy minds and help clear out our life’s unkempt pathways to success… thus making our journey a lot more happier and easier.       now, wasting all that ‘saved time’ making more & more lists and fervently searching for that truant diary (containing those lists), is a totally different story… & having your family members totally convinced that all that ‘saved neuro’ resources is the reason behind your neurosis, is indeed a tragedy.          mornings, after a hurried kapaal bhati and ten minutes on the cross trainer, i get started with the list for the day, which mostly continues through the day, into the night. now that is a regular day. so you can imagine the length of the list and duration of my list making when i decide to host a party, that too an army one. for the knowledge of my civilian friends, let me tell you that in the army we always believe in walking the extra mile… mostly to digest the food and shed the calories that we have managed to pile on at our ‘larger than life’ parties (well deserved after a day of upholding our national flag and safeguarding our mother land), which are a regular feature of an army life. our starters are enough to put a permanent stop to jughead’s hunger pangs. so when we get to the end of the party after going through starters,  appetizers, mains, desserts and lists for the same; our souls are ready to desert our bodies and diaries are left over flowing… for sheer lack of space.          before you get the idea that food alone is the hero of our parties, let me tell you that our parties are multi starrers. the ambience, decor, music, arrangements, entertainment… all play pivotal roles. innovative ways of serving all that abundant food is also an important criteria. so today, although i am not going to take you through the entire party procedure, i will show you some unique tray arrangements to serve simple snacks. these are simple, organic arrangements, mostly inspired by nature.                                                                              take a look…          so, after taking you through this tray fest, now it’s time for me to continue with my routine list, lest i forget what is to be done next, meanwhile you guys grab some rest. posts navigation ← older posts recent posts ring the bell a list in time saves ‘time’ flatter with a platter change your frame…… of mind rote is not the right route recent commentsreshma on mum’s the wordjett on mum’s the wordreshma on a glass of ‘whine’renju on a glass of ‘whine’ammu on a glass of ‘whine’archives february 2017 october 2016 september 2016 july 2016 april 2016 march 2016 january 2016 december 2015 november 2015 october 2015 august 2015 may 2015 march 2015 january 2015 december 2014 october 2014 september 2014 august 2014 june 2014 may 2014 april 2014 march 2014 february 2014 january 2014 december 2013 november 2013 october 2013 september 2013 categories uncategorized meta log in entries rss comments rss wordpress.org proudly powered by wordpress
