conscientization a resource for anyone trying to raise their own consciousness homebegin as theater artistssample page what is “conscientization?” by admin :: published on may 19th, 2012 at 8:13 am :: read more by admin simply, conscientization is an english language attempt at the portuguese word conscientização. according to the freire institute it is the process of developing a critical awareness of one’s social reality through reflection and action. simply put, it’s having one’s consciousness raised. it’s the “eureka!” or “light bulb” moment when a human being looks around at the world they have been living in and  sees things for what they are, as opposed to what they are supposed to be. you’re sitting in a class room listening to the teacher and they say something that you “know”, based on your concrete experience of the matter, is false information. you may try to correct the teacher which in turn may or may not have serious repercussions (i.e. an argument with the teacher, you getting detention or being to the principal’s office, a teacher who now hates you).  you may choose, however wisely, to let this moment pass without saying anything. what action you take based on the teacher’s error is insignificant in comparison to what has been discovered – you now understand that your teacher is capable of making a mistake. proceeding in your thought process you may realize another possibility:  if your teacher can be misinformed about one “fact”, then that same teacher could have been misinformed about others. that realization might inspire you to question whether anything that teacher has ever taught you is completely accurate, which could be a significant amount of data. this contemplation may end with the misinformed maestro, however, there will probably be other implications drawn from that single bit of misstated information. you as a student may consider that one fallible teacher may signify the potential fallibility of all teachers. teachers make their living ensuring that the rest of us are well-informed. one could say, based on popular understanding, that making sure the rest of us “get it right” is the teacher’s primary societal role. that being said, coming to the shocking realization that a teacher, possibly all teachers have the potential to be wrong about the facts, opens one up to consider that anyone in a position of authority has the potential to make an error, even in their area of greatest expertise. none of this is to say that teachers are ever wrong. i’m not here to be critical of teachers. heaven forbid! i’m also not here to blindly challenge any qualifications or authority in any wholesale fashion. the above example was intended merely to illuminate an idea. therefore let me be clear and say, hypothetically, that if one were to discover a teacher to be misinformed about a subject, however likely that might be, and if one were to follow a similar train of logic to the one i have described, the mental/emotional process one might under go in such a case – perhaps one might call it critical thinking – would be conscientization. search for: pagesbegin as theater artists sample page
