former vodafone germany ceo jens schulte-bockum as its new chief operating officer, replacing jyoti desai, who is retiring. besides, the group has announced it is hiring bt global services sub-saharan africa ceo oliver fortuin as executive head of business enterprise and bernice samuels as group executive of marketing. schulte-bockum will assume the position of group coo effective 16 january 2017. schulte-bockum was ceo of vodafone germany between 2012 and 2015. “we expect jens to bring extensive experience in the consumer business, as well as the area of large-scale transformation in a convergent operation,” mtn said in a statement to shareholders on wednesday. fortuin, meanwhile, will join mtn on 1 march 2017 from bt global services. fortuin has decades of ict sector experience at companies such as ibm, hewlett-packard and lenovo. “as head of bt global services, oliver was engaged in the development and sale of enterprise solutions to many multinationals across the african continent. oliver will greatly enhance mtn’s strategy in this area,” mtn said. samuels, meanwhile, is a familiar face at mtn. she was previously chief marketing officer at mtn south africa, prior to assuming a similar role at first national bank. after leaving fnb, she was named executive director of strategy and business development at sabmiller in south africa. “these senior management appointments bring to finality the management aspect of a large-scale transformation and operational review process which i am confident will place the group in good stead to capitalise on its many prospects and reach its full potential in a rapidly transforming and exciting sector,” said mtn interim executive chairman phuthuma nhleko in the statement. source:daily trust business normal 0 false false false en-us x-none x-none the nigerian communications commission (ncc) has said foreign exchange issue, high operating cost and the need to protect smaller operators from closing shops have made data price hike inevitable in nigeria’s telecom industry. disclosing this at a press conference in abuja yesterday, three top ncc officials said the current data price regime was unstainable as “it could kill the industry.” josephine amuwa, tony ojobo and abubakar yakubu, who are the ncc’s directors of policy, competition &economic analysis, corporate afffairs and tariff competition respectively, said the introduction of price floor for data services was also to address market distortions, unhealthy price wars and value erosion that could threaten telecoms business in nigeria. explaining further why hike in data price is inevitable, amuwa said an unnamed dominant operator was engaging in predatory pricing to drive down prices and drive out other operators. “where this is successfully executed, the dominant operator will then increase prices to the detriment of the subscribers. if this is allowed to happen, the industry could be moving towards a monopoly”, the ncc director said. on the belief that market forces should be used to determine the prices, amuwa said due to the nigeria’s telecom market imperfections, market forces alone could not be entirely relied upon to ensure efficiency. “based on the comments from service providers, we observed that small operators were not able to compete with big operators (mtn and globacom)at their average price per megabite of 0.70/mb. even airtel and etisalat could not compete with these two service providers because of the added advantage of operating in the wholesale transmission market segment. most of the small operators also complained that at the n0.75/mb (which is the upper limit of industry average) they were not able to properly cover cost and make profit”, ojobo said. speaking further, ojobo said it was not true that nigeria’s data price regime was one of the most expensive in africa. he said in bringing out the new data price floor, ncc consulted widely with all stakeholders in the industry before it pegged it at 0.90kobo/megabite for big operators and 0.49k/mb for smaller operators. on his part, yakubu said some of the operators had capacity issues and the introduction of price floor was one of the ways to correct that. he said between october last and now none of the operators expanded their networks as it should be expanded and this was dangerous for the market. source:daily trust business normal 0 false false false en-us x-none x-none as the senior national women’s team the super falcons continue their sit-in protest in abuja over unpaid bonuses and allowances after their 8th awcon triumph in cameroon. the minister of youth and sports, solomon dalung, nff president, amaju pinnick and the chairman of the league management company of nigeria (lmc), mallam shehu dikko are off to london to sign a new kit sponsorship deal for the super eagles with sports wear manufacturing giants, nike. dalung and amaju pinnick dalung and amaju pinnick . although the nff had before the tournament pledged to pay the falcons bonuses and allowances for qualifying, the team played and won without bonuses and allowances paid. they have since embarked on a protest following their return from cameroon. one of the players told bbc sport that their sit-in at the agura hotel in the capital will not end until they receive all bonuses, which totals us$23,650 (about n11.5m) per player. “we are not leaving this hotel and we have not been told exactly when we are going to get paid,” the player, who insisted on anonymity, told bbc sport. “the plan is to stay here until we all receive the money because the moment we leave there will be no opportunity to get it again.” source: vanguard sports moves by president muhammadu buhari to confer national honours on some individuals this year is currently being threatened by the ill-health of his chief of staff, mr. abba kyari. the national award, which is instituted annually has as its objective to recognise and honour citizens and friends of nigeria who have distinguished themselves in their various endeavours and contributed immensely to the development of the nation. it is also intended to serve as motivation for nigerians to emulate the exemplary conduct and services of those being honoured and inspire them for such national recognition. the last time a major investiture of the awards took place was on september 29, 2014 when former president goodluck jonathan conferred different categories of national honours on 313 persons. the investiture brought to 4,737, the total of the national honours so far conferred on individuals since its inception in 1963. buhari did not confer anybody with the award in 2015. a top government official, who pleaded anonymity, on wednesday that the president refrained from conferring the awards in 2015 because he inherited a list of nominees that “is not credible.” “you will recall that president buhari was inaugurated on may 29, 2015. as of that time, a list of awardees had already been prepared by the last administration. “that list was not credible, it was full of apologists of the last administration. that was why the event did not hold that year,” the source explained. in the case of 2016, the government official said a list had already been prepared by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation. he said the list had been submitted to the chief of staff to buhari for approval. he however said kyari’s illness was stalling the process. “this year’s list of those to be conferred with the awards has been submitted to the chief of staff. his illness is however stalling the process. we hope that when he is back with good health, action will be taken on the list,” the source said. kyari, who has been ill, was last week flown abroad for medical attention. the secretary to the government of the federation, mr. babachir lawal, had in april reconstituted the committee on national honours award. he had reiterated that for the national award to retain the prestige that it was accorded, recipients who conducted themselves in any dishonourable manner would be stripped of the national honour. the sgf had also said the combined investiture ceremony for the 2015 and 2016 national honours award would be held this year. members of the reconstituted committee include justice mohammed alfa belgore (retd.)
