cirrus_minor we are the people about st terminal : open urls simply with dmenu or rofi posted by cirrus on january 27, 2017 posted in: general technobabble, software. tagged: st suckless dwm tmux terminal emulator github dwm patch diff. leave a comment tmux running in dwm window manager since vte(3) emulators are broken due to some ‘line ending’ bug and random glyphs appear all over the camp, i decided to switch from termite to st, as i already use and enjoy other suckless projects as in the dwm window manager i figured it was a natural progression. sure tools like tmux-open can do the job and is great when you are in full keyboard mode, but sometimes when relaxing its nice to have a simpler option than finger yoga. i found the st externalpipe patch to be most useful. i git cloned this build of dwm as it came with some patches that i find to be of use. steps to build install dwm: 1: change $user to your username mkdir /home/$user/.dwm && cd /home/$user/.dwm 2: git clone https://github.com/cirrusuk/dwm.git 3: cd dwm 4: as root make install clean 5: exit executable file will  be installed to /usr/local/bin                             st externalpipe patch showing urls in rofi we install st in the same way as above, but we add the externalpipe patch, 1: cd st 2: #download the patch to the st directory wget http://st.suckless.org/patches/st-externalpipe-20161125-e448324.diff 3: open up the config.h file in the st directory add this to static shortcut shortcuts for rofi static shortcut shortcuts[] = { ... { modkey|shiftmask, xk_n, externalpipe, { .v = "xurls | rofi -dmenu -l 10 -columns 1 | xargs -r piper"} }, for dmenu static shortcut shortcuts[] = { ... { modkey|shiftmask, xk_n, externalpipe, { .v = "xurls | dmenu -l 10 | xargs -r piper"} }, 4: #apply the patch: patch -p1 < /path/to/st/foo.diff, change $user to your username. patch -p1 < /home/$user/.dwm/dwm/st/st-externalpipe-20161125-e448324.diff 5: as root make install clean 6: exit 7: finally, get the piper script, save it in your path: /usr/local/bin and make it executable, then install xurls from your repo now when using st with weechat-curses or irssi, or any tui that shows hyperlinks, hitting the alt+shift +n key will open rofi or dmenu whatever choice you added to the static shortcut shortcuts[] = { array, dispaying all url’s on the screen, highlight url and hit enter, it will open: the piper script can be edited, as it is all html will open in firefox, all you tube urls will open auto in mpv, and image urls ending in .png,.jpeg etc will open in feh. footnote: setting the piper script as any terminal emulators browser will allow youtube urls to auto open in mpv, urls ending in .png, .jpeg .etc will open  in feh. all html will open in firefox, most handy for weechat-curses or irssi users, edit to suit. regards share itclick to share on twitter (opens in tagged: firefox, linux, media, mplayer, osx, stream, video, vlc. leave a comment   the admin’s of streamlive have changed syntax and made changes to the mobile version of site, now we need a user agent switcher extension to access it. i have another simple workaround which i’m not going to post here, if anyone is interested hit me up on twitter or leave a comment.  to re-enable the mobile version of site, install this user agent switcher firefox add-on and set it to use either android or ios  #cat&mouse [update] i am noticing that m.streamlive.to (the mobile version of site) now points to streamlive.to (not mobile). once you have found your desired stream, in the address bar delete the www and replace with an m.so we get the mobile webpage. since the livestreamer plugin for this site is broken, here’s a way to watch all streams from streamlive.to in your favourite media player, firstly click <– hyperlink  find a stream you like, click it, you will see a player, right click player and highlight/click ‘copy video location’ like so ..   then open a new tab and paste in the video location url from your clipboard to the address bar ..   an .m3u8 playlist file will begin downloading, normaly to /tmp,  simply open it with your chosen media player [in firefox preferences you can also set your player as default handler for the mimetypes (mp3 audio) (streamed) (audio/x-mpegurl) m3u8 file rtmp   stream will then begin playing in chosen player automagically] i have tested this using firefox in linux and os x, thats all folks  .. another nail in adobe flash coffin. p.s to have it work in windows we need to create our own .m3u8 playlist file see this older blog post. share itclick to share on twitter (opens in new window)click to share on google+ (opens tech, windows10. leave a comment i have been using archlinux now for around four years, and contrary to popular belief archlinux does not break often due to it being bleeding edge and running the latest and greatest software out there, in my experience it’s quite the contrary, like most forty somethings i started my computing escapades in the late 80’s running basic on an old bbc micro, then ofc when windows 93 came around i became a ‘windows user’ right up until around 5 years ago, i found myself having to reinstall windows at least once per annum ( sometimes much more than once ) i got fed up doing this and spending maybe 40% of my computing time ‘scanning for and fighting with malware’ so like many other power users i ‘ditched windows in favour of a proper unix like os’ . i started off with pclinuxos which i found to be a great distro with an awesome welcoming community who taught me lots, back then i found kde to be buggy and would break occasionally so when i felt confident enough i decided to shop around and attempt to find a linux distro that suited my needs. after a year of distro hopping mostly amongst the ‘user friendly’ distros i found those kind of distros would often break after updates, also some tend not to trust the person sitting at the keyboard ( one or two don’t even give the user sudo by default ) this might be great for some but not for me, i’m a control freak as far as my os is concerned, again i found myself having to re install more often that i would like.. i also have os x mavericks installed on this pc and i must say in my opinion it’s much better than windows due to the fact it too is unix so it lets me run many of my favourite command line commands/programmes. although in comparison to archlinux i find it to be a tad clunky but it does have some superb applications, parallels springs to mind, if bsd or linux wasn’t a thing i’d prolly use os x as daily driver. enter arch ( which has lived up to it’s name of being one of the strongest structures known to mankind ) after attempting to install archlinux 2 or 3 times in virtualbox i felt i was ready to install it on metal, the install is different from others wherein it’s not a graphical installer with buttons / progress bars etc. the install is all done from the console, it may look difficult to the novice but it’s really not. this is when i learned of standalone window managers and decided to forget about big complex full blown desktop environments like gnome & kde, i experimented with window managers and i was amazed by how small ( some only 2 meg ) configurable, and simple (not to mention blazing fast) they were, i used openbox for the first year, during which time i became aware of tiling window managers, the rest as they say is history. i soon became the stereotypical arch user, with my tmux sessions, dotfiles and obligitory tiling wm. of course this method of computing is not for everyone, arch or even linux in general is geared towards enthusiasts and power users, the masses don’t seem to care that the software they use on a daily basis runs code that keeps tabs on them, the recent hoopla with volkswagen shows what kind of sculduggery goes in ‘proprietary’ code, sadly it’s often geared towards the advantage of the programmer, or the company who pays the programmer, the users needs and desires are secondary, anyways i didn’t mean to go into rms mode, just thought i’d mention. archlinux has lasted longer on /dev/sdx than any other os i have used (and i’ve used a few) in all those years i had only one issue where the proprietary nvidia driver got updated and xorg did not ( well not until a few hours later ) i was left without a graphical environment ( which was actually a learning experience which stood me in good stead as i now run a headless server on a raspberry pi) however at the time i was in panic mode without my gui, as i do not game i have since purged the nvidia blob in favour of the open source gpu driver which has given me zero issues. currently my main box hex boots ( have i coined a new term ? ) it has 6 internal drives with the six os on seperate hdd’s (windows10, osx mavericks, freebsd, arch i686, arch x86_64 and another arch on a wee 16gb sandisk cruzer blade thumbdrive which runs arch testing repo’s ( i don’t code so this is how i try & give back to the community) whilst on the subject of the archlinux community i’d like to take this opperchancity to dispel those accusations that archers are elitist, mean and unhelpful (being told to read the wiki or a manpage does not equate to elitism) it’s how things are done over in archland, teach a man to fish and all that, spoon-feeding newbs does not happen, personally i think those sort of claims and accusations stem from inexperienced manjaro users and their ilk. heres a couple of tips i would give to any linux users 1. don’t use proprietary graphics drivers unless you game or use the computer for other gpu intensive tasks, the open source drivers have gotten much better over the past few years and are very capable. the proprietary drivers often cause problems. 2. don’t use a session manager like lightdm, slim, gdm, kdm etc. login via tty and start x with the ‘startx’ command. i have found these login managers to be troublesome. it’s really simple to login via above method and to choose de or wm using ~/.xinitrc 3. experiment!  try new de’s wm’s don’t settle for the most common ones just because they are just that. wm’s will cause less problems and are often much faster. i guarantee if you try all available wm’s be it tiling or floating you will find one that suits your needs better than the common de’s. there’s no excuse, wm’s like dwm require zero configuration and are ready to go out of the box. thanks for reading. if you agree or disagree with my musings feel free to leave a comment. share itclick to share on twitter (opens in new window)click to share on google+ (opens in new leave a comment if we go here http://m.streamlive.to and sign up using a bogus email; ie: mailinator we can view all the free streams from that site in our chosen local media player, if using windows or osx id recommend using vlc, if using a moar ethical os (wherein you are not a commodity) i suggest using mpv. once you have logged in then browse to the stream of your choice, click the link which says “play link 1 (hls) for ios & android” above link has since been removed so we need to create our own .m3u8 playlist, see below. in firefox browser we can right click the video player and choose ‘copy video location’  paste it into new tab and the .m3u8 playlist will then download, have mpv/vlc open playlist file in settings under content, make mpv/vlc default handler for rtmp and mp3 streamed (audio/x-mpegurl) mimetypes, or open it manualy. when clicked your browser will begin downloading a small .m3u8 playlist file, usually to the /tmp directory, all that’s required is to open that .m3u8 file with your media player (preferably mpv or vlc) and that’s it. happy viewing .. should your browser not be configured to automagically download the .m3u8 file after clicking the “play link 1 (hls) for ios & android” hyperlink, heres how to create your own .m3u8 playlist file … have a gander at this template .m3u8 playlist file, note the long url on line 3 .. if we then browse to chosen stream webpage and use browser to view the page source, line 146/465  gives us the relevant long url which is akin to the long url in line 3 of the template .m3u8, replacing part of line 3 of the template file with same part of the long url you have just copied from line 146 of the ‘page source’ will create your own playlist file, open it with mpv or vlc. the ‘view page source’ looks like this ..  replace the highlighted part of your chosen stream url with whats in  this template, once you have pasted in your chosen stream url save the file as foo.m3u8, go ahead and make it executable and then open it in mpv or vlc. in http://www.streamlive.to the page source’ we interested in is in one of these two lines of code .. the url’s change randomly so expect to have to do the same tomorrow to view same stream by simply swapping out old url with the new, iv’e found both above and below url’s will work.  just start the copy of url from  _definst_/  onward and paste into same part in the template. in the mobile version of site http://m.streamlive.to the ‘page source’ we interested in is here .. share itclick to share on twitter (opens in new window)click to share on google+ leave a comment firefox has (for whatever reason) disabled the hardware accelerated features for linux users. read on to find out how to enable it. hardware rendering uses things such as your graphics card and other ‘hardware embedded’ circuits to process the webpage. software rendering (this is what you do when not hardware rendering) purely uses your cpu. typically, things that are enabled for hardware rendering are significantly faster when ran via hardware. it also will dramatically reduce cpu usage. there are some computational tasks that are better handled by task specific silicon on your cpu and/or gpu. with hardware acceleration “off” the program will ignore these options if available (via both hardware and drivers) and will just use the inefficient software solution. the main thing this affects is video playback in browsers. check if hardware acceleration is actually enabled in firefox by visiting about:support looking for “gpu accelerated windows 1/1 opengl (omtc)” under graphics. if this shows 1/1 you can stop right here, you do not need this tweak. but if it shows 0/1 here’s how you can force it on … open about:config in firefox (url bar) set layers.acceleration.force-enabled and layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled to true add export moz_use_omtc=1 in your ~/.profile or you can test this by running export moz_use_omtc=1 before running firefox reboot and check about:support for “gpu accelerated windows 1/1 …”  if it shows 0/1 then you are not using hw accelleration. share itclick to share on twitter (opens in new window)click to show box, windows. 2 comments arc welder is a tool to help you test and publish your android apps using the app runtime for chrome (beta), arc. see getting started for more detailed instructions. arc allows us to run most any android apk’s on our pc’s and it’s multiplatform it will work on linux, windows, os x and ofc chromeos. arc is basically just a chrome extension .crx and is installed in the same way you would install any other chrome extension which im sure you are all familiar with    as you can tell from my previous couple of blog entries i like consuming media (video in general) outwith the  browser, not because im a stallmanite who despises adobe flash (although i do) i just prefer my video streams to play in native media player as i find the quality and resource usage is better. so to follow in the same vein as my last couple of posts, this time im going to harp on about show box which is a free application for viewing movies and tv series .  the getting started guide gives a simple step by step guide as how to install arc welder once you have it installed on google’s chrome browser or the more ethical open source chromium browser, then i highly recommend adding either the mobdro.apk or show box .apk to arc welder, both have a wide selection of video streams to choose from, be advised once show_box is installed and launched a dialouge box will appear prompting you to update, choose the ‘remind me later’ option.  both .apk’s  give instant access to hundreds of movies and every season of hundreds of the top tv shows , show_box also gives us the option to download the media, view it in the show_box internal media player, or the ‘open with arc’ option which will open the media in your default browser, then you can just copasta the url into your favourite local media player. it also allows us to choose quality of the stream ‘low’ medium’ ‘high’  the highest and most common is 720 p which is not too shabby. i hacked around and got show box to open like a standalone app, without executing arc welder or chromium, by using an alias alias showbox='/usr/bin/chromium --profile-directory=default --app-id=eijgacohmegconnajkflbadbodniodab ' your ‘app id’ will differ, in linux i got mine by using xprop thats about it for show box & arc welder happy hacking ps: there’s an open ticket for arc welder bug on 32 bit os currently only working in: software. tagged: floss, linux, media, osx, stream, video, vlc, windows. leave a comment i figured i would write a tutorial for my windows using brethren showing them the awesome livestreamer and how to go about installing and using this awesome bit of kit.  livestreamer allows us to watch a number of streaming services in vlc or any media player you choose, which is great as it does away with the need for flash, those who bother to check out livestreamer will see a marked improvement in video quality and the ram footprint and cpu cycles are drastically decreased in comparison to when using browser to view streams. the windows installer can be found here the installer includes a compiled version of livestreamer (that does not require an existing python installation) and rtmpdump for viewing rtmp streams. it will also generate a default config file all that requires editing is just the #player line, remove the # comment and point the player line to your players .exe like you see in my .livestreamerrc (line 12) it would also be wise to ensure the line rtmpdump= points to the newly installed rtmpdump .exe (line 19 on my .livestreamerrc)  the default directory for the .livestreamerrc is c:\users\cirrus\appdata\roaming\livestreamer.  once you have done that, then that is us finished, easy huh?  now we want to find some sites which livestreamer has native plugins for, i will list a couple … + vaughnlive.tv + veetle + filmon + you tube to play the streams in windows we open up the cygwin terminal (if installed) or the command prompt / powershell and simply type .. livestreamer url of stream best for example livestreamer http://vaughnlive.tv/1crime best the chosen stream will then open in your chosen media player. livestreamer is in my top 5 applications and it is multi platform so linux osx and windows users can benefit, see here for more info on livestreamer . i tend to watch the crime stream often so i created a .bat file by opening notepad, pasting in this one line livestreamer http://vaughnlive.tv/crimecentral best save file as crime.bat and viola we have just created a shortcut to that stream, that might be handy for those who don’t like command prompt or powershell. share itclick to share on twitter (opens in new window)click to share on google+ (opens in new window)click to share on reddit (opens in new window)share on facebook (opens in
