about education tourism contact us privacy policy christmas and 3 kings day fast approaching in malaga by alex on 23/12/2015, no comments hey it is that time of year again where we all run around like crazy people buying presents for friends and family and getting stressed. just a quick walk down the larios centre in malaga city centre is enough to make your eyes water. no not with the cold we don’t get that in malaga we are in southern europe remember! ps larios is a the main shopping street in malaga and for all you yanks reading this who don’t get to europe that much, malaga is a top city in the heart of andalucia, in spain 🙂 malaga shopping plan for christmas so my plan of attack this christmas goes something like this. jump in car at la cala de mijas or book a taxi or minibus 9.00am drive down the a7 motorway hugging the med sea to plaza major shopping centre. 10.00am (or sit comfy and read tablet if in taxi) worry about parking get stressed in parking area buy a ton of presents in plaza major and tuck into a nice americano and tapas during a well earned rest.12.00pm assess my family christmas list and check off all that is bought. take the renfe.es train into malaga larios to do more shopping and see the malaga christmas lights. eat some more tapas and maybe a sneaky gin cocktail in plaza constituion, malaga. more shopping in plaza merced and a sneaky cana (beer) and some aceitunas (olives) the amount of people running around self inducing stress form the commercialism of christmas and everything that is encapsulated by it is often baffling to me. here in the costa del sol, christmas is still a big thing but nowhere near as manic and commercial as the uk. it may be because the spanish celebrate two christmas days. 25th of december is christmas day for our latino friends but they also celebrate january 6th (3 kings day) where the 3 wise men bear down with gifts on andalucia and all over spain to children and families alike. spain loves a festival there is one thing that has dawned on me about the spanish people, they love a holiday and they know how to party. they have considerable more holidays than the uk and each one is celebrated with street partys, group barbeques, music, food and drinking in that order! they really make a concerted effort to dress up in traditional clothes and stamp their mark on these national and provincial holidays. i’m sure the real reason for all this christmas pressure is conforming to what we are supposed to do. we are supposed to go shopping and put thought into presents, money in a card, duh no thought in that may as well not have bothered. plaza constitution there are plenty of shopping guides and present ideas on the web so i wont bore you any more with mine. categories: spain | permalink culture and history of spain by alex on 25/10/2015, no comments before we dig into the old history of spain we need to appreciate modern history of spain. from the capital of madrid to the sun soaked shores of costa del sol capital city of malaga spain is a diverse country loved by many my favourite places to explore in andalucia, spain is alhambra palace, sierra nevada mountains perfect for skiing, snow boarding and fun. how did spain gain its independence the first to appear were the iberians, a libyan people, who probably arrived to the peninsula from the north of africa. in fact, sometime around 4000 bc, much of spain was settled by the iberians. tartessos, the earliest urban culture documented and probably an iberian tribe, founded an important kingdom of high culture ca. 1100 bce. in the valley of guadalquivir river, in the south of spain. the celts (a typically aryan people) arrived around 1200 b.c., settling in the northern third of the peninsula. later, from the merging of the two races there arose a new one: the celtiberians. this new mixed race divided into several tribes (cantabrians, asturians, lusitanians) and gave their name to their respective homelands. by 1100 b.c. phoenicians arrived to the peninsula, attracted by mining wealth, and founded colonies and a number of trading posts along the coast, the most important being that of gadir (today’s cadiz). the greeks settled along the mediterranean coast, and the carthaginians would follow suit, occupying the balearic islands at the same time. with the fall of phoenicia, carthaginians, under the orders of hamilcar barca, invaded and conquered the iberian peninsula and the balearics. their most important colonies were the island ibiza and carthago nova, the “new carthago”. however, the iberian peninsula was then occupied by rome following the punic wars between rome and carthago. after the roman victory, publius cornelius scipio, africanus, began the conquest of spain, which was to be under roman rule for six centuries. rome left in spain four powerful social elements: the latin language, roman law, the municipality and the christian religion. hispania supplied rome with food, olive oil, wine and metal. the province hispania became part and parcel of roman empire and acquired great importance, even two roman emperors, traian and hadrian, were born there. marcus aurelius and theodosius i, the philosopher seneca and the poets martial, quintilian and lucan also were born in spain. in a.d. 409, when the roman empire started to fall, gothic tribes, like the suevi, vandals and alans, invaded the peninsula. they were, however, defeated by the visigoths, a germanic people who had migrated from central europe. in a.d. 412, the barbarian visigothic leader ataulf crossed the pyrenees and ruled spain, first in the name of the roman emperor and then independently. by the end of the 6th century, the visigoths have occupied virtually the whole of the peninsula. gothic dominance lasted until the beginning of the 8th century. in 711, the muslims of northern africa launched an invasion across the strait of gibraltar and defeated roderic, the last visigoth king, occupying most of the peninsula within a few years. they conquered the iberian peninsula very quickly except for a small bulwark in the north which would become the initial springboard for the reconquest, which was not completed until eight centuries later. only three small christian counties in the mountains of northern spain managed to cling to their independence: asturias, navarra and aragon, which were eventually to become kingdoms. the period of muslim sway is divided into three periods: the emirate (711 to 756), the caliphate (756-1031) and the reinos de taifas (small independent kingdoms) (1031 to 1492). during almost 750 years, independent muslim states were established, and the entire area of muslim control became known as al-andalus. this period is remembered in part for a flowering of philosophy and religious thought, and in part for continuing tensions between christians and muslims. though the small christian kingdoms in the north were a nucleus of resistence, the arabian culture was prospering in the rest of the country. in fact, cordoba, muslim spain’s capital, was the richest and the indisputable cultural center of this area of the world. the southern parts of spain, called al-andalus, were prospering in the moorish epoch, thanks to new sciences and agricultural technics. magnificent mosques, palaces, and other monuments were constructed. large moorish populations grew, most notably in the south, especially in the guadalquivir river valley, and on the mediterranean coastal plain of valencia. towards the end of their reign they became concentrated in the mountains around granada. categories: spain | permalink ← older posts special recent postschristmas and 3 kings day fast approaching in malagadecember 23rd, 2015hey it is that time of year again where we all
