| leave a comment | barry the department of art and design, with support from the center of excellence for the creative arts is pleased to welcome award winning textile artist, sonya clark, to the campus of austin peay state university for a visiting artist lecture. clark is known for using a variety of materials including human hair and combs to address race, culture, class, and history. her talk will continue a very exciting 2016-2017 season of the department of art and design’s visiting artist speaker series. sonya clark has been chair of the craft and material studies department at virginia commonwealth university school of the arts in richmond, virginia since 2006. formerly she was baldwin-bascom professor of creative arts at the university of wisconsin-madison.  she holds an mfa from cranbrook academy of art and in 2011 she was awarded their first mid-career distinguished alumni award. she also holds a bfa from the art institute of chicago and a ba from amherst college contemporary southern art, a 2011 united states artist fellowship, and an art matters grant. clark was born in washington, dc to a psychiatrist from trinidad and a nurse from jamaica. she gained an appreciation for craft and the value of the handmade primarily from her maternal grandmother who was a professional tailor. many of her family members taught her the value of a well-told story and so it is that she values the stories held in objects.     her work is in the collections of the philadelphia museum of art, national museum of women in the arts, indianapolis museum of art, virginia museum of fine art, musees d’angers in france among several other institutions. sonya has exhibited her work in over 300 museums and galleries in europe, africa, asia, australia, and the americas. her work has been favorably reviewed in several publications including the new york times, philadelphia inquirer, italian vogue, los angeles times, hyperallergic, and huffington post. the lecture will take place wednesday, march 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the university center room 303. with support from the center of excellence for the creative arts, all art and design events are free and open to the public. for more information on this lecture, contact michael dickins, gallery director, at dickinsm@apsu.edu. posted in: visiting speakers | tagged: sonya clark, visiting artist dr. tony morris to participate in dialogue at david lusk gallery in nashville february 20, 2017 6:39 am | leave a comment | barry david lusk gallery – nashville is pleased to present the sixth installment of dialogue, a series of art related conversations led by guest speakers and a curious audience. join us on wednesday 22 february from 6-7pm for an open forum led by tony morris and hans schmitt-matzen. this month’s discussion is in conjunction with our current exhibition of schmitt-matzen’s work. his show, the leviathan, features neon and wooden wall sculptures, and large photographs that all explore the various meanings and possibilites that reside in human-made marks. toni morris holds a phd in 20th century american art from case western reserve university. he is an associate professor of art at austin peay state university. while his research investigates the varied artistic expressions of queer masculinities, his teaching involves formalism, identity politics, materiality, as they relate to contemporary art. hans schmitt-matzen recieved his bfa in painting and philosphy from middle tennessee state university. his work has recently been exhibited in group shows at mdr in magdeburg, germany, like the spice gallery in brooklyn, salisbury university gallery in baltimore, track 13 gallery, and zeitgeist gallery in nashville. when he is not drawing with his sons, he is actively the center of excellence for the creative arts is pleased to welcome adventure artist, steve snell, to the campus of austin peay state university for a visiting artist lecture. snell’s work is a bridge between performance and experiential installation and his lecture will continue a very exciting 2016-2017 season of the department of art and design’s visiting artist speaker series. steve snell uses his creative practice to experience life through the production of extraordinary events for himself and others.  he calls this work adventure art, and uses the term to describe a performance-based action of adventure, in which he (or someone else) uses creativity and imagination to have exciting and remarkable experiences. he is inspired by local history, myths, and the image of the american west and uses them as a catalyst for engagement and research in an effort to create heroic narratives for the present day.  these experiences are then later transformed and perpetuated through popular, social, and artistic media, resulting in a larger network of newspaper articles, tv spots, drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, and good old-fashioned storytelling.  adventure art is an attempt to live life as though it were an epic movie or at least present the image that it is one. snell earned an mfa is studio art from the university of massachusetts amherst and both a bfa is studio art and bs is art education from miami university in ohio. his work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions and screenings throughout the country. his most recent adventure art exhibition, snacks on the river, was completed this past september when he floated down the missouri river between nebraska city and kansas city (~200 miles). he is currently an assistant professor of art in foundations at the kansas city art institute. the lecture will take place thursday, february 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the university center room 307. with support from the center of excellence for the creative arts, all art and design events are free and open to the public. for more information on this lecture, contact michael dickins, gallery director, at dickinsm@apsu.edu. posted in: visiting the cryptozoological studies and observations of dr. william oliver raymond”, 2016, by scott raymond and heather abels professors scotty raymond and heather abels have work included in museum of real and odd. an exhibition organized by the indianapolis museum of contemporary art and big car. from the exhibition press release: the truth is out there. and so is the art.  in partnership with the big car, we bring the work of 13 contemporary artists exploring the idea of ufos and the paranormal to the tube factory at 1125 cruft st. imoca’s museum of real and odd, curated by jeremy efroymson, is a commissioned exhibit with artists from around the country making new work for the show. after an open call for submissions received 250 proposals, efroymson selected the 13 artists: nayda collazo-llorens in collaboration with ander monson, scott raymond & heather abels, jennifer scheuer, robert thurlow, katy unger, alex grabiec, julio orta, pato herbert, cassandra klos, josh haines, and michael jordan, aka alkemi. efroymson feels high-caliber artists are well poised to remove some of the negative associations with the unknown. “the folklore and mythology of the paranormal has really saturated our society,” he said. “especially with the ghost hunter shows on television and the prevalence of the topic in movies.  i remember the movie poltergeist from my childhood, which really scared me. while we still have scary movies, i think maybe we now have a more open view to paranormal experiences of a positive nature. i’ve seen shows and artwork that deal with these topics, but they are not always of the best quality. i wanted to curate a show on these topics with high quality art and artists.” posted in: faculty news | tagged: heather abels, scotty
