ainmosni's raves and rants giving a lightning talk for fun and profit posted by: ainmosni on 14/08/2013 22:46 categories: python it might sound weird but amsterdam finally has it's own python users group, called the amsterdam python meetup group. i say this sounds weird because you'd expect a city the size of amsterdam to have quite an established community of pythonistas but this hasn't been the case. all that was needed was for someone to step up and organise meetups and the rest followed. i attended the first meetup, which was a very casual get together at brouwerij de prael which had a nice attendance and showed that the amsterdam python community did indeed exist and is comprised from a varied group of talented and friendly individuals. interesting topics were conversed, many good beers were consumed and a good time was had by all. the success of the casual meetup in de prael gave enough motivation to do a more serious meetup a month later, this time consisting of lightning talks and of course a friendly drink and dinner. in the time leading up to the meetup, a call for talks was posted and i let slip that i wouldn't mind doing a talk about python meta-programming, something that people seemed interested in at the first meetup and i was quickly roped into actually doing the talk. i quickly started to doubt if i was doing the right thing as the only presentations i've ever given were internal of the companies that i worked for, for people that i already knew, i had no idea if i had the nerves or the calm to stand up in front of a big group of people that i didn't know and tell them stuff that they might, or might not be interested in. and what if i was wrong about something, what then... tags: apmg byte lightning talk meetup python talk related articles: in which i remember that i had a blog. the hidden difficulty in finding a blogging engine. and then there was a blog. read more... comments in which i remember that i had a blog. posted by: ainmosni on 23/04/2013 12:44 categories: life so, after writing the previous three posts, life went a bit hectic and writing blog posts kinda fell of the radar. so, what have i been up to since the last post? well, i quit my job at tomtom, started a job at booking.com where i started as a unix system administrator but changed function to python developer working on tools for both system administrators and developers which i have been enjoying quite a bit. booking.com is an awesome company to work for, it's a huge company but you don't notice that while you're actually working there. there is little actual bureaucracy getting in the way of getting things done and work has a way to find the people who are most willing to do it, which is how i ended up doing python development while being hired to do sysadmin stuff. i got asked how good my python was, to which i responded that it was pretty decent, and if i wanted to work on internal tooling, to which i responded that i wouldn't mind doing that at all. tags: booking django life python vacation work related articles: giving a lightning talk for fun and profit the hidden difficulty in finding a blogging engine. read more... comments logging or how i stopped worrying and love splunk posted by: ainmosni on 08/02/2012 19:08 categories: system engineering when i started at my current job, i was quite overwhelmed by the amount of applications we had running and how these were all related in one way or another, application a depended on information from application b which in turn needed application c to make sure that application d wasn't sending the wrong information to application e and so on. of course, this made for a very hard to debug stack as an error in application a could be caused by a fault in application b, c, d, e, any of their dependencies or even a combination of all of these. as you can imagine, all these applications generated an enormous amount of log data that was spread all over the place. debugging any problem became just as much a scavenger hunt as it was problem solving as you had to find all the relevant logs, find the time of the problem and correlate all that data manually. this was a tedious mission to embark on and made any root cause analysis very time consuming and one was less motivated to embark on said mission. tags: log splunk sysops related articles: read more... comments the hidden difficulty in finding a blogging engine. posted by: ainmosni on 23/01/2012 15:17 categories: python rant one of the reasons that it took me so long to set up my own blog was that i could never find a blogging engine that fit my requirements so i always said i would just write my own... well, writing my own never really happened as i always have more important/fun projects on my plate so yesterday i took the time to evaluate blogging engines and chose one to host this blog. the requirements i had were as follows: it needed to be usable out of the box. it needed to be easily extensible. it needed to be easily customisable. it needed to be updated recently. python-based would be strongly preferred. it would be nice if it used the django framework. tags: blog django evaluation python zinnia related articles: giving a lightning talk for fun and profit in which i remember that i had a blog. and then there was a blog. read more... comments and then there was a blog. posted by: ainmosni on 23/01/2012 00:36 categories: android linux python rant so, after being online for longer than most people can remember and participating in many communities, i've finally set up a blog... yes, yes, i know, way to keep up with the times ain but i've never really bothered until now. why now, you ask? well, i think it's mostly because i've been building new stuff lately and every so often i just want to vent a bit about things i think work well, things that work less well or things that generally horrify me. i will also be sharing information about current projects and relevant tech tricks on here. tags: android first hello world linux python rant related articles: giving a lightning talk for fun and profit in which i remember that i had a blog. the hidden difficulty in finding a blogging engine. read more... comments who is this guy anyway? i'm daniël franke, a backend software engineer and systems engineer hybrid working at zalando. i've been coding and administrating servers for most of my life and this is the corner of the internet where i can just rant and/or rave about anything i want without anyone stopping me. this blog will be mostly tech centred but it can go off-topic sometimes. tweets by @ainmosni categories android: 1 life: 1 linux: 1 python: 3 rant: 2 system engineering: 1 android apmg blog booking byte django evaluation first hello world life lightning talk linux log meetup propaganda python rant recruitment splunk sysops talk vacation work zinnia © daniël franke | blog powered by tapping into the mystic energies of the planet.
