the best of geology and earth science on the web latest from the geoblogosphere: researchers investigate the lighter side of earth’s inner coregeospace | 23 august, 2017by patricia waldron scientists can generally agree that earth's inner core, located more than 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) beneath the surface, is a dense ball of iron with a small amount of nickel. it likely contains lighter elements as well, s...read morecategories: featured; the zuta village landslide: another example of a high mobility slidethe landslide blog | 23 august, 2017i have written on several occasions of late about high mobility landslides, both in the context of the regent landslide in sierra leone and the oso landslide in washington state.  as an aside full mapping is now available of the track of the extraordinary regent landslide - as expected this was a channelised flow all the way to the coast.  another very interesting example popped up in my google alerts yesterday, although the landslide occurred in early july.  this example is the zuta village landslide, which occurred during heavy rainfall in hunan province, central china, on 1st july.  the landslide killed nine people and injured a further 19.  this image, from xinhua, provides an overview of the landslide:-read morecategories: landslide report; however, a majority of deep-sea exploration did not occur until after the 1960's.  and although the current amount of sampling and exploration of this great environment is without precedent, much of the deep sea remains unexplored. how much of the deep sea you ask? this is indeed a tough question to answer. to derive an exact answer, we would need to know of every single sample of every deep-sea expedition taken plus all the submersible and rov dives and how much area they covered. of course this is extremely unreasonable but i find myself with some free time and interest so an exercise in estimation...read morecategories: uncategorized; an exciting week of volcano science at #iavcei2017 in portlandvolcano-blog | 23 august, 2017iavcei, the shortened version of a very length name, is one of those conferences which comes about every 4 years, and is accompanied by a healthy dose of anticipation at the same time. to describe what iavcei is i am going to steal a friends phrase who described iavcei as "the world cup of volcanology", this is a great analogy as it encompasses the excitement of the event with the standard of science that is conducted. my first iavcei was in japan four years, and included a fortuitous viewing of an erupting sakurajima, so i was certainly looking forward to this one! i was a little tardy to the opening ceremony...but had a good view of the large number of volcanologists in attendance! me pointing to mt st helens.... as always these conferences start with conglomerations of groups catching up after what may have been a long time since the last meet and then it's straight into the sessions. given that this is a volcanology specific conference there was frequently more than one session of interest so there was a lot of running around between different rooms. i gave a talk on some of our recent work at sheffield on low-cost ultraviolet remote sensing. read morecategories: uncategorized;
